Chapter 44: Remember December
When I finally composed myself I went to the music room. Writing a song about this is the only thing that is going to stop me from breaking down and relapsing. I played guitar and wrote everything down until I had a song. I was recording it an hour later.
I want be your first priority,
but I can’t ask you to choose me over them.
I love you more than words compare,
If I have to let you go then I will.
You’re my life,
but I can’t see you hurt.
Go to them, go to them,
I’ll be okay for now.
Go to them, go to them,
that’s what’s best for you.
Leave me, leave me,
I can’t put you through all this.
My life has been blessed with the presence of you.
Walking down the hall,
And holding my hand with you.
Just know I’ll always care.
I’m not good for you,
don’t ruin your life for me.
The pain will go away,
You’ll find someone better.
You’re my life,
but I can’t see you hurt.
Go to them, go to them,
I’ll be okay for now.
Go to them, go to them,
that’s what’s best for you.
Leave me, leave me,
I can’t put you through all this.
I can’t hurt you anymore.
I can’t handle this pain.
I wanna be your first priority,
but you have to choose them over me.
I stopped recording and saw Demi in the doorway. “Don’t say anything,” I told her.
She walked in further, “Just tell me what happened.”
“They asked him to choose.”
“And you put yourself out of the picture,” she finished.
I nodded, “I didn’t know what else to do.”
“Kayla, you know he loves you. He would do anything for you.”
“But he was putting himself in a million different directions. He didn’t know who he was, what he wanted, or who his true friends were.”
“Everybody goes through that time in their life. You didn’t do that to him. I went through a period like that too. I had a lot of problems and I was surrounded by people who didn’t really care. It took a long time to realize who the friends were that did care. Dylan is going through that time now, but that’s not your fault.”
“His friends are terrible people; why would he even debate whether to stay with them over me?”
Demi shrugged, “I really don’t know. I can tell you one thing.”
“What?”
“I have never seen anybody love someone as much as Dylan loves you. Maybe he’s just scared of letting go. I remember you being scared of letting Alicia and your dad go.”
I sighed, “What do I do?”
“You wait for Dylan to make the right decision and come back to you… and he will.”
-Dylan’s Point of View-
“You!” I snarled as I stormed into Zack’s house and slammed him into the wall.
“Dude, what the hell?!” Damen yelled and pulled me off Zack.
“This is your fault!” I yelled. “Ever since you two came back all you’ve cared about is bringing Kayla down. What did she ever do to you?! Is it really all worth it?!”
“Lovers quarrel?”
“Shut up!” I yelled. “You two are just bullies. Was I ever your friend or just a pawn for you to get to Kayla?”
“We asked you to make a choice,” Damen said, “So which is it?”
“I will always choose her,” I told them, “I can’t believe I even considered any of you my friends. It’s pathetic and I will not let you hurt her.”
“We will do whatever it takes to get our life back.”
“Then I guess it’s war.”
-Kayla’s Point of View-
“I have to go,” Demi said, “Will you be okay?”
I nodded, “I think so. Go ahead.”
“Okay, but I’ll call later.”
I followed her out and got comfy on the couch. I put my favorite movie in and wrapped my arms around my knees which were pulled up to my chest. What have I done? Now everything is a mess and it’s my fault again. Demi stayed all afternoon to make sure I didn’t relapse. She was right to stay. Without her here I would have done it. I lost one of the best things in my life; something I care about more than anything. I just hope Demi’s right. I hope he figures out what’s right and comes back.
There was a knock at the door and I stood up to answer it. I opened the door, “Dylan? I thought I told you to leave.”
He looked like he just sprinted all the way over here, “I needed to do something.”
“Are you okay? Why are you breathing so hard?”
“I was just in a fight.”
“Are you okay?! What happened?!”
“I’m fine, I’m fine, I got away.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked him.
“Did you really think I would leave you?”
“I told you to.”
“I guess I didn’t listen.”
“Why not? It’s the best thing to do.”
He shook his head, “No it’s not. What I just did was the best thing to do.”
“And what did you do?”
“I told Zack and Damen off.”
“What did they say?”
“They’re pretty mad, and I probably made it worse, but it needed to be done. I had to tell them –“
“You don’t have to tell me,” I told him, “You should go home and rest.”
“No,” he argued, “Not until I tell you this.”
“Fine,” I held the door open, “Then come in.”
We both sat down on the couch and I waited for him to continue, “I stormed in there angrier that I have ever been in my life. I ended things with them for good. I haven’t really been friends with them in years. They came back here as different people; people I don’t know who obviously don’t know me either. It should have been an easy decision and I’m sorry I hurt you.”
“Dylan, I –“
“No, let me finish,” he said and continued, “I love you. Like I said, you are my life. I don’t care how many fights I get into with old friends or even my family; you’re the one I can’t stand to lose. Anyone who gives me a choice like that should know that I will always choose you. It’s not even a close contest.”
I smiled and took his hands.
“I also need you to know that you never have to take yourself out of the picture. Yes it’s true that my life has been more chaotic since you came into my life, but I’ve also never been happier. This isn’t your fault; this is something I needed to realize by myself. You don’t need to blame yourself for this. You are everything that is good in my life and you always will be, okay?”
I smiled and let go of his hands to wipe my tears.
“Don’t cry,” he held onto my face, “Please don’t cry. I hate seeing you cry.”
“I don’t want to be that girl again, I don’t want to hurt anyone,” I cried.
“You are not hurting anyone. They just want to bring you down. Nothing that they say is true. You are nice, gorgeous, funny, inspiring, and the strongest person I have ever met in my life. That is something you should believe.”
“I love you,” I told him, “I love you, I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” he hugged me, “I’m not going anywhere. I can’t leave. I’ll never be able to.”
I pulled away so I could kiss him and we fell back onto the couch.
“I don’t think I can live without you,” I told him.
His hands grabbed my waist and pulled me down closer, “I could never live without you Kayla. You mean everything to me.”
I smiled and kissed him again. He’s here, and he’s mine.

“Kay, are you down here?”
“Yes!” I yelled from the kitchen.
He walked in, “What are you doing?”
“Just making coffee before we have to go to school.”
He put his arm around me, “You should have woke me up. We only have 15 minutes before we have to go to school.”
“I wanted you to sleep after everything that happened yesterday.”
“Did you get enough sleep too?”
I nodded, “I feel fine.”
“Are you sure?”
I nodded again, “I’m okay now, I promise. I’m just happy I didn’t lose you.”
He hugged me, “You’ll never lose me. I’ll get our bags from upstairs.”
“Okay,” I smiled.
I poured myself a cup of coffee and walked out to the living room. I picked up one of the frames on the coffee table and smiled. It’s Dylan and I during Christmas break when we first started becoming a couple. Dylan came down the stairs and joined me in the living room with his own cup of coffee.
“What are you looking at?”
“Do you remember this?” I showed him the picture.
“Yeah,” he smiled, “I loved that break.”
“Me too,” I admitted. “We first became a couple.”
“I should have made a move sooner.”
“I’m just glad you did,” I set the picture down.
He kissed me quickly, “It took me a long time to finally get the courage to kiss you.”
“Now look at all the time that has gone by,” I smiled.
He smiled back, “We have a lot of great memories.”
“Yeah we do.”
“And we’ll have a lot more.”
I nodded and kissed his cheek, “I’m glad you stayed the night.”
“Me too. My parents are probably freaking out, but it’s not like we planned it.”
“As long as you don’t tell them what really happened.”
He chuckled, “That would be stupid. I’ll just tell them I was hanging out with Jack. I’m sure he won’t mind and I can ask him when we get to school.”
“Good idea, ready to go?”
He finished his coffee and set the cup in the sink, “Yeah, are you?”
I set my coffee mug next to his and nodded, “Let’s go.”

what do you want Kayla's last two years of high school to be like?
There is a reason I decided to continue this story. I just felt like there was more that needed to be told about her journey to recovery because you can't just wake up one day and get better. It really is something you struggle with every day. The same goes with bullying. You can't just stop bullying one day and expect it to go away forever. There will always be people out in the world like Zack and Damen who will try to bully others and it's important to know how to stand up for yourself and for the people being bullied.
So yeah... haha
hope you're liking the story :)
