Chapter 3- Distrust

Several months had passed since the lab incident and I was released from the hospital shortly after my awakening. The nurses there were shocked to see how fast I was able to recover, considering I had come into the hospital with severe burns.

According to them I should've been permanently scarred, but miraculously I haven't got a single mark left on my skin from that day.

At least there's one thing I can look on the bright side of, amongst the hellish amount of things in the dark.

In the months since the incident I have yet to see a single one of my friends or anyone outside of my family. My dad had gone into godly overprotective mode and won't let me do anything without adult supervision, which I mean is kind of fair considering what happened before, but it's still super excessive!

I had to start working out at home to try and avoid becoming a limp noodle due to muscle deterioration. This whole isolation situation was really messing with my mentality.

Since I basically went MIA my friends stopped bothering to contact me, not that they did before hand either. Guess it puts things into perspective of who's really worth sticking around with.

With my lack of acquaintances and my school plan messed up, there was really nothing left for me here. I couldn't find the motivation to get back up and pursue my goals, things were just too fucked up at this point.

I'm guessing my parents could see my depressive episodes over the past month and they decided that we needed a big change of scene.

That change of scene was something along the lines of packing all of our belongings and hauling our asses to Whistler.

A part of me was relieved to leave behind all these bad memories but another part was worried something worse will happen if we move.

Today was one of the last few days we were spending packing up to move. All the moving vans were lined up outside our house ready to drag all our crusty ass furniture to a new place.

If you know me, you'd know I like to work smarter, not harder. In this scenario that involves carrying three large boxes all at once to the moving van.

Might not be working harder but it certainly wasn't smart. My dumb ass couldn't see a thing from behind the stacked boxes so I simply had to rely on my other senses to help me cross the street to the moving vans.

Way to go Elias, what an absolutely intelligent decision you've made.

Things were going pretty smoothly as I slowly waddled across the street, I began to congratulate myself for saving sooo much time by doing this.
Until a breeze picked up, and by a breeze I mean a big ass gust of wind.

Next thing I knew two out of three of the boxes were on the floor and I was disappointed. I bent down to retrieve the boxes and get anything that had fallen out, I guess I was a little too focused on the situation at hand that I forgot where I was.

The road. Right smack dab in the middle of the road. Like I said, way to go Elias.

"Elias! Move!" My brother's voice pulled my focus from the boxes and brought it back to my surroundings. I hadn't noticed until it was too late that a car was coming full speed my way, damn distracted drivers.

"Huh, so this is how I die. That's trash, would've been cooler if I died in the lab fire," I thought to myself as the car came my way. Then time seemed to slow, except it wasn't like those action seems where everything is just put in slow-mo to look cool.

Everything went slow but I could move.

"What the shit?" I looked at my brother in confusion, only to see him moving slow too. He was mid cry for help, I could see every saliva drop flying out of his mouth as he spoke. Nasty.

Still in a state of shock and not sure if the current situation was actually happening or not, I grabbed the boxes and walked back towards my brother.

Almost the second my foot landed on the side walk things went back to normal and the car sped right past us. Eli stares at the road in shock before slowly looking towards me with a look of utter amazement.

I too was confused and shocked, my brain couldn't exactly process what the hell had just happened. Time slowed down just long enough for me to avoid death, maybe it was another miracle.

"What?! Wh- how did you do that?!" Eli suddenly shouted as he grabbed my arm and pointed at the road. I looked down at hip with an equally perplexed face.

"Do what?"

"How'd you get from the road to here in like negative eight seconds? You were literally a blur!" He exclaimed as he shook my arm for emphasis.

"Huh, I just thought God had stopped time for me so I could walk away," I said with a shrug and he screamed in excitement.

"You have super powers! You have super powers! How else would you have been able to do that! I saw it with my own eyes!"

My eyes widened at the possibility and I quickly darted my eyes around to check if anyone else was present. Thankfully we have no neighbours, the moving guys had gone on break, and our parents were in the house packing still

"Actually?" I whisper shouted at him with confusion in my eyes.

"Yeah it totally makes sense!" He said as he jumped around in joy, obviously having his heart set on the idea of my having super powers.

"Um it really doesn't though, why would I suddenly have powers when I've been powerless my whole life. That doesn't make sense, dummy!" I exclaimed as I smacked him on the head for jumping to conclusions so fast.

"Oh yeah! Well how else would you explain that?" He emphasized while gesturing between the road and where I was currently standing.

"The same way I'd explain why I don't have horrific burn scars, a miracle!" I said as I rolled my eyes and picked up the boxes to put them in the moving van, wanting nothing more with this nonsense conversation.

"But you were in a lab accident with chemicals...and fire...and...stuff. Maybe you got super speed somehow," Eli was clearly confused considering his vast lack of scientific knowledge.

"Eli, you don't know squat about science. Because if you did, you'd know that was you're saying right now sounds absurd."

"But it makes sense! How do you think the Flash got his powers, he probably wasn't born with it either!" He argued and I rolled my eyes.

"The Flash also isn't a thirteen year old girl who was in a lab accident at a high school. The hell do you think they've got in a high school?"

"Well whatever, there's no way you can convince me that you don't have powers," he said stubbornly as he crossed his arms and scowled at me.

"You think whatever you wanna think. Just keep your mouth shut, we don't need to make things more of a mess than they already are," I warned him as I placed the boxes in the van and walked back towards the house.

"Yeah we'll see..."

"I mean it, Eli. For once just keep your big mouth shut, or so help me I will mess you up," I threaten with a finger pointed at his chest. He swatted it away and walked into the house with a huff.

He can be such a nuisance sometimes, he's always been rather insensitive of people's feelings and emotions. Eli never understood the concept of good timing and bad timing.

I made my way up to what remained of my room and contemplated my situation. I decided to humour Eli's theory of super powers and take some time to do some research of the Flash.

I never really knew that much about Flash I was always more of a Batman fan but as of now Batman wasn't going to be able to help me.

I picked up my laptop out of my backpack and sat on the floor to start doing research. I started with some light research on who he was and how long he's been around before I started to do some deeper searching to find his identity and origin.

For a normal person it would've been nearly impossible to find a hero's identity through the internet, but I have my ways and methods to always find out the truth. Flash was an easy one to find too.

After about 2 hours I narrowed down all of the people in similar lab accidents and I was able to conclude that Flash's real name was Barry Allen and he used to be a scientist but after some accident he ended up getting his powers.

Upon further research I found the circumstances of our accidents to have been quite similar. I remember receiving a huge shock from something during the lab, although I could've just received a simple shock and that's all we have in common.

I wanted to find out more about his powers and experiences to see if we really do share similar situations.

I checked YouTube to see his powers in action and I ended up watching like 20 videos of him saving people and closeup views of him speeding. Oddly enough in some videos there were two speedsters, I never thought the Flash had a sidekick.

After about 3 hours in my room reading articles and doing research, I was getting pretty hungry and tired of staring at my laptop screen. I decided now would probably be a good time to get some dinner.

I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen and quickly raided of any snacks. As I casually walked towards the stair with all of that food in my hands I noticed that all of my family was gathered in what was left of our living room.

My bother stood proudly on top of a large box as he asked for everybody's attention and gave me a weird look.

"Everybody please pay attention to Elias, she has a little surprise she wants to show everyone!" Eli said while looking me right in the eye and I raised an eyebrow in question of his antics.

Then without hesitation he pushed a small button on a remote in his hands and I heard something activate to my right and I turned in confusion.

When I looked to my right saw his ball launcher toy thing and before I could think to react, Eli pushed the start button and it sent multiple balls hurdling my way.

Eli had grown fond of pranking me with this cursed machine so on instinct I brought my arms up to my face and braced for impact.

After a second nothing had happened so I opened my eyes, and just like with the car everything had slowed down.

Thinking this was just another lucky situation I stepped out of the way and walk toward the machine before flicking the off switch. I heard all the balls hit the wall with quick thuds and I turned to look at Eli with an unimpressed expression on my face as time went back to normal.

"This joke is getting old you know," I say as I gesture to the machine but Eli's face showed nothing but excitement and joy. A huge contrast to the expressions on my parents' faces.

"What...what just happened," my mom questioned with fear in her voice and I finally caught on to my brother's intentions.

"Eli, you little twerp!" I shouted as charged at him and pinned him to the wall.

"You just couldn't let it be, could you!? You had to screw things up! I told you I wasn't ready!" I shouted and his excited face began to contort into one of confusion and hurt.

"Elias, what the hell was that?" My dad shouted pulling my attention away from Eli. I slowly released him and met my dad's gaze.

"A miracle?" I shrugged sheepishly not really knowing how else to explain it without sounding insane.

"When Elias was in the lab accident it changed her and gave her super speed." My brother said simply and I gave him a glare that could burn through his soul.

"That...doesn't make sense! What is going on, is this some kind of  joke, you two?" My mom shouted with an offended expression on her face and I shrug again.

"It's not a joke, Elias has super powers now-"

"Would you shut up about that!" I snapped and cut Eli off.

"Elias what is going on?!" My dad yelled with a warning look in his eyes. I was at a loss for words, I didn't have a logical explanation yet.

"I-I...I don't know ok! Something is wrong with my and I don't really know how to explain it!" I spoke with fear and confusion in my tone, the room became quiet as nobody knew what to say.

"Thanks for keeping your mouth shut, jerk," I pushed Eli away from me and stormed up the stairs, not giving my family the chance to stop me.

I ran up into my room and slammed the door shut behind me. My back hit the door and I sighed as everything that just happened repeated over and over in my head.

"I need some air..." I say to myself before opening my window and climbing out onto the roof. I sat down and hugged my knees close to my chest. I felt so complicated and my heart hurt. I lost track of how long I was on the roof but I was brought back to reality when I heard my window slide open and I felt a presence beside me.

"...are you okay, Elias?" A sweet, quiet voice asked and I felt a tiny hand rest on my arm. I looked down to see my little sister, Eliot, sitting beside me. She rested her head on my arm and I couldn't help but smile at her.

"I'm...okay, Eliot. Just dealing with some big girl things," I spoke reassuringly, she was too young to understand what I was going through but she still made the effort to comfort me.

"Okay. Cause you seemed mad at Eli."

"Oh yeah, I'm mad at Eli. You know how thick headed he can be sometimes," I chuckled and she nodded softly.

"Mommy and daddy aren't mad at you, by the way. They were talking about it for a while but I think it's okay now," she said with a smile. I patted her head as a thank you for trying to comfort me.

"That's good to know, I was pretty scared by their reaction to what happened. I thought they'd be terrified of me."

"I'm not scared of you, Elias. I think it was super cool what you did! You looked like the Flash," she cheered with a smile and I grinned softly at her. At least one I've got one person cheering me on.

"Thanks, kiddo. Means a lot to me. I think you outta head to bed now, it's getting late."

"Okay, you go to bed soon too. Goodnight!" And with that she got up and carefully hopped back into the house. I chuckled to myself at her innocence, even in such a tense time she could still bring herself to smile.

I want to have that same innocence, I want to get through this.

I stared out at the stars, watching them twinkle, I couldn't help but feel that I'll won't get another moment like this one. I won't get moments like the ones before the accident. I won't get moments like today. Everything was changing.

It was scary to me how fast things seemed to take a turn for the worst, but I knew I had to get through it. Who knows, maybe things will change for the better in due time.

If the Flash can get through a life changing event like this, then I can too. And I was determined to get through it strong.
