Chapter #13- Hayden and Rebecca Open Up.
Hayden is glaring daggers at me and I am extending the same courtesy to his Mate.
Why do you think we are playing the glaring game? Because Hades is an asshole. And so am I. And so is Becs.
"She won't leave until she gets what she wants, Baby" Becs tells Hades and I pretend to gag at the use of the cliché nickname.
Hayden sighs, "You are right, Becca" and pulls Becs on his lap as he unravels his sandwiches.
"I ordered mayo for you" I tell Becs with a smile, hoping to win some brownie points, but all she does is flips me off.
Rude much?
"Whatever" I scarf down one sandwich, and then tell them, "I don't have all the time of the world. Tell me what the fuck is up with you both before my Mate comes here"
They stop feeding each other (they are that annoying couple who engages is tooooo much PDA) and an intense look is shared by them.
This makes me pause mid bite and consider what is it that has them both so wound up.
"Del..." Becs starts and the way she says my name makes me forget about the food in front of me (it isn't even that good) and stare at her with apt attention.
Becs takes a deep breath and starts, "Four years ago... Hayden and I decided that it was time we have a baby-" Her voice wobbles on the word 'baby' and Hades squeezes her ever so lightly, staring at her lap and not looking up to meet my eyes.
I don't understand. They want to have a baby? That's good, right? So why are they so upset? I know Becs is not pregnant, because her scent hasn't changed, but they should know better than me that it is very difficult for werewolves to conceieve.
Sometimes it even takes decades for a couple to have a baby.
"And we went to the pack doctor to ask for advice... on how we can have a baby ASAP... and there we learned that... we learned that..." She starts sobbing after that and will I be considered heartless if I snap at her to cry later and tell me what the fuck she learned first?
I am about to open my mouth, (fuck heartless) but one look from Hayden has me shutting it back.
"It's okay, woman. Lemme take it from here, yes?" Hayden pulls her into him and rubs her hair softly as she cries in his chest.
To me he says, "We discovered that Becca's uterus has cysts and it was so bad that we had to get her uterus removed and her fallopian tubes sealed"
I gasp. I was NOT expecting that.
"Oh Becs..." I don't know what to say further, but my heart breaks for my brother and his Mate.
"Yeah... she underwent surgery in Australia, three years ago" Hayden's voice has forced indifference.
My brother.....
"And well... I didn't want Becca to lose hope, you know? So... Becca and I we started looking into adoption and stuff-" I cut him off.
"Supernaturals are not allowed to adopt humans" I remind him and he rolls his eyes.
"Yeah... I know that, we were planning on adopting a supe kid you know?" I cut him off again.
"Isn't that kinda impossible? I mean all super natural orphans are under the care of The Supernatural Council... and they do not allow adoptions" I state as a matter of fact. Thanks Tag and his random facts.
"Yeah... At that time we didn't know about the Council's no adoption policy so we tried and well... I tried to pull my weight and all you know, tried to bribe them and all- Don't look at me like that! I am not proud of what I did but if it meant that I would have a child, then I would do it all over again" Haden is nearly shouting now and that makes Becs remove her head from where it was laid on his chest and say, "Take it easy, Babe. Let me continue from here"
Hayden nods and continues glaring at me as Becs start speaking. Even as my sister in law speaks, I can't tear me eyes away from my brother's.
The vulnerability in them makes me want to punch somebody. Kill even.
My big brother is not allowed to be vulnerable. No one I love is.
"Hayden and I... we looked into a lot of things... and finally we decided that maybe we should opt for surrogacy-" Becs does not allow me to stop her.
She continues, "A friend of mine from my old pack is a doctor... he suggested it" She answers my unasked question.
"We knew that no werewolf woman would accept to be a surrogate mother, they'd get too attached to the baby, if they were able to conceive one that is, so that was a con to our plan" She has a far away look in her eyes as she continues.
"But Hayden and I were desperate... so we started looking for a human... who would agree to carry our baby for us"
I ignore Hades' warning look and snap at Becs, "Fucking hell! A human would not be able to carry a shifter's baby! She would die.... only humans who are mated to wolves can do that...."
"I know! And that's why we were careful, because for one, we couldn't risk exposing a human to our world for and we also couldn't allow an innocent woman to die for our sake..." Becs says wistfully.
"So where did you find the person you were looking for? I am assuming you did find her" I try very hard fo keep an open mind about all of this.
"We met a couple... the female was wolf and the male was human" Hades picks up where Becs left.
"The male died... he had cancer... and his mate was left behind... with his sister" He adds and my eyes widen ever so slightly. I think I know where this is going.
"We wanted the female to carry our child, but-"
"She refused?" Is that why they are sad? Because they can't find a surrogate.
"We wish she did, Del. We wish" Becs' laugh is humorless.
"She accepted, but so did the her Mate's sister" Hades says.
"Oh.."
"You both are confused whom you should select? Well that's a no brainer... I know that the wolf will get attached to the child, but the human will die. Death is not something to be taken lightly... I say you go with the Wolf" I advise them.
They share a look.
"Del, the wolf's mate died. Chances were, she would last 3 months tops before falling in the grave herself" Hayden reminds me of the only con of having a mate. Withiut them, you just can't live.
"So you are chosing the human?" I ask them. "Does she know that there is only 0.1 % chance that she will survive this pregnancy?" I huff.
"We chose her 6 months ago, and... two months ago, she confirmed of being pregnant with our child" Hayden says.
I cannot contain my excitement.
"Oh My! That is excellent news!" I am about to lean in to hug them both, when the identical sad expressions on their faces bring me back to reality.
"So... what really is the problem here? Is she dying? I mean if she is... I don't think you both should feel guilty for her death considering that she agreed to be the surrogate herself" I try to reason with them.
"Del... we don't know whether she is dying or not" Becs whispers.
"Oh... I can get you both in touch with a doc-"
"Del, we don't know whether she is dying ot not, because we don't know where she is" Hades completes his Mate's sentence.
"What do you mean you don't know where she is?" I hiss.
If something happened to my niece or nephew... I swear that Human will wish she didn't know about werewolves.
"She ran away, Del. One day she tells us that she is pregnant with our child, that we are going to be parents in 5 months, and the next day, when we go to visit her, she is gone. Poof!" Becs lets out a laugh that sounds more like a cry.
"Her house was locked and when we broke in, all her things were gone... she ran away with our child" Hayden pulls Becs in a tighy hug and let's her cry her heart out.
"Oh Becs... why didn't you all tell me about this sooner?" I am already plotting in my head about who I am going to contact and how many favors I am going to pull to find the surrogate and make sure my niece or nephew is fine.
"Because... we didn't want you to worry about us what with you already stressing over moving back to Little West" Hades tells me and I growl.
"You were willing to risk my niece or nephew's life by not telling me about this whole fiasco?" I am beyond angry. He needs to stop protecting me from shit like this. I mean I have been here for more than two weeks, and I didn't even notice that they were worried about something until recently.
"Del..." Becs gulps on seeing my pissed off face.
"I want all the information you have on the surrogate. Her name. Phone number. Address... oh and a photograph. Recent if you have it" I am about to reach out to Ed, because he is the right person for this kind of job, when Hayden speaks.
And his words bring my world to a halt. Temporarily as it is.
"You know her, Del" He says and I am confused.
"What?"
"Our surrogate. You know her"
"Really?" I try to recall all human females I know of, 10, and then shortlist them to someone who is a mutual friend of my brother and mine.
"Please tell me she is not your surrogate" Oh my Moon.
"You introduced her to us when you realized that we already knew Robbie, her brother and Janet, his Mate..." Becs reminds me and while doing so, she doesn't seem to notice me panicking. As a matter of fact, neither does my brother.
"Hayden..."
"Vanessa Bishop is our surrogate, Del" Hayden spells it out for me.
As I leave my brother and his mate to enjoy the sandwiches (my hunger just committed suicide) with a promise that I will do my best to help them, I can't help but think two things.
First, Taggart should not get the wind of this and Second, I am going to kill Eduardo as soon as I can get my hands on him.

I plan to make two pit stops on my way back to the apartment. To my Mate.
The first one is to Mel, to tell her (more like order) that Taggart should be kept as engaged as possible for the next couple of months.
She has a lot of question, but I make sure that she knows that this is a need-to-know operation.
And next, I visit Alpha Ashton.
"Delilah, I was expecting to see you yesterday" Alpha Ashton greets me with a smile as he opens his study for me.
"Huh?" I am confused. How did he know I was going to visit him?
"You are here to present your case, aren't you?" He gestures for me to sit on the chair in front of him.
"My case?"
"I am sorry Delilah, you may be my son's mate, but I cannot treat you any different than I would treat my other pack members" He gives me a pitiful look.
"I cannot not punish you, you know? You did attack a pack mate and that is against pack rules-" When I realize that he thinks that I am here to try and get out of the punishment, I cut him off.
"I apologize, Alpha Ashton, I am not here to ask you to revoke the punishment" I give him a fake smile.
"Oh. You are not?" He leans back in his chair and runs an assessing eye over me.
"No. I have no problem with the punishment, however, I was wondering if I could be excused for a couple of days... I have to go out of town-"
I am cut off by the mahogany door slamming and a very angry growl.
"You are not going any fucking where, Delilah" Alpha Ulysses looks like he is ready to kill someone.
I smile to myself. He saved me a trip to the apartment.
Giving him my best puppy dog eyes, I say, "Hey, Mate!"
