A nervous laugh sounded from one of the boys sitting near Kitano. I looked and saw that it was Iijima, the guy on the bus that threw something at me, whether it was an accident or not I still wasn’t sure.
His laughter stopped when everyone started to stare at him, including Kitano. “What’s so funny?” He shouted to which Iijima gave no reply.
“Sir, I don’t understand what you’re talking about I mean…”
“Actually your teacher Hayashida was strongly against the selection of class B.” As he said this two army men rolled in something covered by a sheet.
He ripped off the sheet to reveal the top part of the bloodied body of our former teacher Hayashida. His face was covered in a dark red layer of blood. His mouth was open in a silent scream that was never heard and his arm was bent at an odd angle by his head.
All the students crawled back as they screamed in unison, some even fell off of their chairs if they were sitting on them. This was all starting to seem too real.
I refused to scream and refused to back away but I couldn’t help but look to Kiriyama for reassurance like I used to. All I saw was an emotionless face staring at the dead body without any interest.
“Calm down and listen, this is a no good adult.” Kitano said pointing to the corpse “You have to work hard in life not to become like him.” With that the body was carted back out of the room.
“Time to watch a video, don’t fall asleep now.” Kitano said sitting on the teachers desk.
The TV turned on showing a red BR logo in the background and in white writing it said “The right way to fight a battle royale”
A cheerful looking woman came onto the screen wearing an orange shirt with BR on it, an army style cap and army style pants.
“Hello everyone in class B.” She said in an overly excited voice.
“Hello.” Kitano shouts to the TV whilst clapping his hands together, everyone else just stared at him in silence before returning their attention back to the TV.
“You are the lucky class that was Chosen for this year’s battle royale. Congratulations.” The woman shouted in an annoyingly high pitched tone.
“Thank you.” Kitano says back.
“Now I’m going to explain the rules for you. Listen well to fight right and with gusto.” Some of the pupils seemed to listen more intently with that said. I guess that it would be a lie if I said that I wasn’t listening more closely too.
“You are on a deserted island. It’s about 10 kilometers around, but we evacuated everyone so it’s empty.”
“Hey I said no whispering.” Kitano shouted jumping up from the desk. The girl who was whispering stood up probably about to apologize but it was too late. Kitano had already got out a knife and thrown it at the girls head.
Screams echoed all around the room as the body of Fumiyo Fujiyoshi fell to the floor. “Move, Move.” Kitano shouted and the students scurried leaving a pathway for him to get to the body.
“Sorry, it’s against the rules for me to kill isn’t it?” Kitano’s voice said like almost nothing had happened. He kicked the body so that it was facing upwards before retrieving his knife from her skull.
Girl 19 Fujiyoshi Dead
43 To Go
The whole class started screaming and running to the doors blocked by soldiers in a desperate attempt to escape.
The soldiers raised their guns to the air and started to send off warning shots. When the students ran away to try and find a different escape the soldiers lowered their guns and started to shoot at the floor where our feet were.
Kitano stood in the middle of the carnage with a smirk on his face just watching as students tried their best to not get hit.
I stood towards one side of the room. I knew that running and trying to escape wasn’t going to work so instead of becoming an easy target I stayed out of harm’s way like a couple of the other student’s did.
“Noriko!” I heard some people shout. I looked towards the voices to see Noriko on the floor with blood coming from her arm.
Nanahara and Nobu were the first to get to her and when Nobu saw that Noriko was hit he ran at Kitano screaming.
Kitano grabbed hold of him and slashed at his butt before throwing him at a soldier who gave him a hard punch. The impact of the punch was enough to send Nobu to the floor. Nanahara went to check that his friend was ok before also trying to leap out at Kitano. Before he could do anything stupid Mimura and Iijima held him back.
The soldiers pointed their guns at the boys before Kitano waved them off and shouted “Back to the video.”
The annoying voice of the woman returned saying “The Island is divided into many zones, every six hours your teacher will broadcast updates about which zones are becoming danger zones. If you’re in those then you should leave quickly, because the danger is… Ok, about the necklaces you’re wearing.”
There was a quiet mumble around the class as they saw the collar like necklace on the TV screen that was identical to each of their own.
“There 100% waterproof, shockproof and permanent! It monitors your pulse informing us of your location and movements so if you linger in a danger zone or cause trouble, we can identify you and transmit radio waves that trigger an alarm and BOOM it explodes!”
Everyone jumped and some even went to touch there collars. I’d decided that, that was what I was going to call them. Not necklaces but collars because that’s what they were like. The collars were what was keeping us here and they were one of the reasons that we were probably going to end up killing each other.
Because of these collars we were going to end up being the puppets to these people, having to do whatever they say. Like a dog has to be too its master or else it will get a hard yank in punishment.
“If you try to rip it off it explodes too so try not to do that, OK!”
I saw Nobu’s surprised and disgusted face looking at the teacher “You, asshole!” He screamed throwing the bag he was meant to be taking on the school trip towards the teacher.
“Shut up I can’t hear the video” Shouted Kyoichi Motobuchi, a rather nerdy looking student.
Nobu jumped out at the boy even though his friends tried to stop him. The two boys started to roll on the floor in their fight making everyone around them move.
“Cut it out.” one soldier shouted pulling Nobu off of Motobuchi whilst another threw the nerdy boy back into the crowd of students.
Nobu tried to fight against the soldier but was having no success as he was taken to Kitano.
“I really hate to do this.” Kitano said taking out a small black object from his pocket that looked a lot like a remote control in some ways.
The soldier got hold of Nobu’s head and pulled it back revealing his neck, or more importantly the collar on his neck.
Kitano pressed a button on the control thing which set off a beeping sound from Nobu’s collar. The soldier released Nobu and I looked towards the silver band and could see a red flashing light coming from it every time it beeped.
“Better run guy’s.” Kitano said with a laugh.
“What’s happening?” Nobu screamed running towards people as he was trying to take the collar off.
People would either run from him or push him away; as the beeping became faster his pleas for help became more desperate. One boy Yoshio Akamatsu even threw him to the floor.
Nobu scrambled back up quickly, and I wanted to help but I knew that there was nothing I could do. I knew that I wasn’t an easy person to get along with but even at the orphanage if ever I was sad or lonely Nobu would make me laugh with one weird comment or another.
“Shuya!” Nobu shouted, reaching out for his best friend but it was too late.
They were the last word’s that escaped his mouth before the collars bomb went off and blood spurted from his neck all over the floor and his best friend who was the closest person to him.
He lay motionless as Nanahara walked up to him and kneeled down beside him before Nanahara started to cry and call out Nobu’s name as if that was going to bring him back.
I looked away from the scene to see other people either holding their friends close or crying at the scene that was before them.
I looked back to see that Nanahara picking something up that was stained in blood and lying next to Nobu’s hand. When I looked closer I saw that it was the photo that they had taken on the bus, with Nobu’s head out of the shot.
Boy 7 Kuninobu Dead
42 To Go
“What a shame,” Kitano said walking up to the two boys “I always did look after him in my own way.” Nanahara’s glare of death at that moment was a glare that you could instantly tell meant that he was going to take revenge.
He stood up slowly still glaring at Kitano without saying a single word.
“What’s that look for, Nanahara?” Kitano said staring at him blankly.
Once again Mimura and Iijima tackled Nanahara to the ground before he could get himself killed.
“Oh I forgot one important thing.” The woman on the TV said after it was turned back on. “There’s a time limit on this game! 3 days. If we haven’t got a winner after three days all the necklaces automatically explode, and no one wins! As long as we’re here lets fight hard so that doesn’t happen!”
“Ok, any questions so far.” Kitano asked addressing the class.
“Yes” Said Motobuchi putting up his hand. I couldn’t help but glare at him, I know that it wasn’t his entire fault but he was one of the reasons why Nobu was lying dead on the floor in that moment. “If I survive can I go home?” He asked
All the students surrounding him looked up at Kitano expectantly whilst I just glared in disgust at him, the fact that he actually thought that he would be able to kill all of us and then return home with a clear conscience disgusted me.
“Sure, but only if everyone else is dead.”Kitano replied
Mimura slowly raised his hand.
“Yeah Mimura.”
“How were we chosen?” He asked
“By impartial lottery.”
“One more?” Mimura said once again raising his hand
“Sure.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“It’s your own damned fault. You guy’s mock grown-ups, go ahead and mock us but don’t you forget. Life is a game, so fight for survival and find out if you’re worth it.”
