(Note: Hey lovely readers!! i'm so sorry i've made you all wait so long! writer's block's really a bitch sometimes. And i'm sorry it's so short! but enjoy <3)
She had cleaned up the makeup beneath her eyes and looked back up at me.
“You know,” she started, then pursed her lips together, forming a tight line. “I’m not exactly feeling this party anymore.”
I suppressed a smile.
“Would you…” she trailed off, debating whether or not to say it. “Would you drive me home?”
“Of course.”
She led me through Noah’s house to the front door and I had the strangest sensation that I was being watched. Having the entire world staring at me 24/7, I had developed a keen sense of when I was being watched. And as Evie led me to the door, I was definitely being watched. I looked around, but made eye contact with no one.
I then took the lead and Evie’s hand in mine and led her to my car. As I did, desire welled in my gut and I pulled the door open for Evie. She smiled a sly grin and got in the car, closing the door behind her.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing, Payne?” Rang a voice from behind me.
“Fuck,” I muttered under my breath. I turned to see Noah walking towards me, across the yard, with fists, balled by my sides.
I glanced behind me, at Evie, through the glass of the window, and she began to open the door.
“Stay in there, Ev, this’ll get ugly,” said Noah, suddenly in front of me, slamming the door shut again, trapping her in. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he said, turning back on me.
“Noah, I’m just giving her a ride home,” I said, trying my best to be calm. I was scared. Noah was bigger, stronger, and harsher than me. He could beat me in a fight, we both knew it. I also knew that he was quick to get physical. And that he was drunk and probably high.
“No, Payne, I know what you’re doing, you’re stealing my girlfriend!” he said, landing a fist in my gut. I doubled over in pain. “Just because you’re in your gay little boy band doesn’t mean you can have whatever the fuck you want.”
By then, Evie had crawled out the driver’s side door and screamed. “Noah! Stop!”
“I watched you,” he said, pushing me to the ground and turning on her. Just watching him snap toward her scared me. I saw the fire in his eyes and smoke in his ears. I pulled myself up, slowly. I felt a nasty bruise forming on my stomach and groaned in pain. “I watched you lead him outside,” he continued. “You little slut, you promised you wouldn’t cheat on me.”
Evie crossed her arms over her chest. I knew her and she wouldn’t let herself be the victim. “Noah, you did something horrible to me.”
“You didn’t fucking tell him, did you?”
“Noah, you can’t expect me to forgive you.”
“You did! And I forgave you!”
“I don’t want you to forgive me and I don’t want to forgive you!”
He released his fists. “Don’t say it, Ev,” he said in a softer tone. “Please, Ev, remember all the wonderful times we’ve had.”
“It’s fucking over, Noah.”
I was proud of her when she said that. Proud that she was taking a stand to someone she always was submissive to. By then, I was standing right behind Noah.
“Goodbye, Noah, have fun getting high off your ass,” she said, opening the passenger door and sitting down.
I watched as his fists once again balled up at his sides and he tensed. “Oh ho you don’t, you little whore.”
He grabbed her wrists and yanked her out.
By then, I pushed Noah. “What the fuck, Noah? You’re the one who had everything and you’re the one who fucked everything up? You deserve to lose her!”
“What, pussy? And you deserve her? What are you going to do? Jazz hands? Sing me a spiteful song? No,” he said and punched at my head this time, but I ducked and punched him in the stomach as hard as I could.
“Liam, Noah, stop!” Evie screeched. By now, people had been drawn out of the house and were watching. Great.
Evie grabbed Noah by the ends of his hair and yanked him back when he came at me again. He bellowed and swung at her. Noah had always gotten belligerent when angry. And belligerent when drunk. And belligerent when high. I watched as Evie’s small frame fell to the ground.
Anger pooled inside me and when Noah was looking with fire in his eyes at Evie, I took a swing right at his face and felt something crack under my fist and blood explode from his nose. He staggered back. I went to hit him again, but Evie grabbed me by the waist and whispered in my ear, “Quick, Liam, don’t be an idiot, let’s go.”
I let her pull me to the car and push me in the driver’s seat. I tried to resist, and kept my eyes on Noah, who had someone helping him up. He cursed at me as I drove away, blood dripping down his face. It wasn’t until I parked in front of Evie’s house when I looked at her.
Her hair had been freed completely from its braid and went off in several directions, curly and wild, but beautiful all the same. Her eyes were trained on mine and were swimming with mystery. Her brows were knit together. Her lip was between her teeth. And on her cheek was a large, purple bruise in the shape of a hand. I could make out where Noah’s knuckles had been.
She let her hair fall over that side of her face and looked up at me sheepishly, saying, “Will you walk me to the door?”
I smiled and cut off the engine.
I got out, fumbling with the handle on the door and ran around the car, stumbling in front of it. I looked in, to see Evie trying to suppress a laugh.
“Graceful,” she said to me in the classic Evie sarcasm I’d missed so much. I opened her door and led her up the steps. She unlocked the door and swung it open, staying on the steps. “Why don’t you come in?” she said blushingly.
I followed her in and instead of heading up the stairs, I walked right into the kitchen and pulled the freezer drawer open and grabbed a handful of ice and dumped it into a Ziploc baggie.
“What are you doing?”
I grabbed a towel from her towel drawer and wrapped it around the bag. I set it on the counter and turned towards her.
“Noah hurt you,” She said, nearly a whisper. I placed both hands on her hips and hoisted her up to sit on the counter.
“He didn’t hurt me,” I said, setting a hand on her cheek and gently running my thumb over her bruise. “I’m sorry I let that happen.”
“Please,” she said. “Asshole deserved a broken nose. And it wasn’t your fault.”
“I could’ve stopped him, it wasn’t your fight, I should’ve protected you…”
“Liam, please, you know better than anyone I’m capable of taking care of myself.”
“But you’ve never been like that around Noah.”
“What?”
“You’ve always followed him. Idolized him. I never really thought you loved him. It was more of infatuation.”
She looked down, ashamed. “I know.”
I walked up to her, each of her legs hanging off the counter on either side of my torso. Her legs were just so goddamn sexy. Oh, how I wanted to just pick her up and kiss every inch of her body.
I felt her fingers touch the hem of my shirt and pick it up. She got a glimpse of the bruises on my gut before I pushed it down. I grabbed the ice bag I’d made and pressed it to her cheek. She was shocked by the sudden cold, but soon became accustomed to it. I held it to her cheek and she ran her fingers through my hair for what seemed like forever. I pulled the ice pack away from her face when water started to drip off her chin. She hopped down from the counter and I followed her to her room, once again being faced with the depressing sight that hadn’t changed since I last saw it.
“Shit,” she said, kicking off her shoes and running to hide it.
“Relax, Ev,” I said. “I already saw it all.”
“What?”
“I came by here this morning but you weren’t here.”
“Oh,” she said, slouching on one hip. She pursed her lips and looked up at me.
“What,” I said, stepping toward her new painting, “Is all this?”
“Oh, that’s, um… you. And me. And you’re apartment. Well, this is really embarrassing.”
“Don’t be embarrassed with me, Ev. Why did you slash all those others?”
“I was, um, just really… freaked out. And they all reminded me of Noah,” she said all too quickly, once again busying herself with picking up clothes and trying to tidy up. I pushed the door closed behind me. Every once in a while, she’d bend over and I’d get a look at her nice looking backside. “I’m sorry it’s such a mess.”
“Ev, stop,” I said and grabbed her wrists. “Don’t.”
I heard her take some deep breaths and calm down. I wanted to kiss her so, so, bad.
I slid two fingers under her chin to make her look at me. “You’ve always looked adorable in my clothes, by the way,” I murmured as my lips connected with her neck. I steadied her head with my hand on her cheek and I felt her melt into the crook of my elbow as I held her around the waist. I left a little love bite on her collarbone as my lips trailed back up the length of her neck and to her lips. Her knees began to bend and she stumbled backwards, sitting on the bed. I watched her do so, feeling myself become hopelessly aroused.
She played with the hem of her shirt, beckoning me to her. I slowly wandered forward, teasing her. She sucked in a long, slow breath, just before I kissed her, leaning back on her bed. I swiped my tongue along the bottom of her lip, then slipped it in, allowing our tongues to intertwine. Soon, she pulled my shirt off. Her fingers slid along my bruises.
“I’m sorry he did that to you,” she whispered.
“Don’t be. Don’t talk about him. Please, just think about me.”
“Oh, Liam, you’re all I ever think about,” she said as her lips connected back with mine. I sucked in a harsh breath as my hand crept up her shirt. “Will you stay the night, Liam?”
“Of course I will.”
