I was placed in the passenger seat, put down carefully. He opened and closed the door for me. What a gentleman he was. I pulled the seat belt across my chest and clicked it into the designated place.
James climbed in on the other side, and he started up the car.
The car roared to life as he twisted the key in the ignition. He swiftly backed out, and we were on our way to his house, which was quite a drive from downtown. I wondered what he was doing downtown, so far away from home. So, out of curiosity, I asked.
"Hey, why'd you drive all the way to downtown? Wasn't there anywhere else you could have gone? Why the downtown woods?" I questioned.
James shook his head and chuckled to himself.
"I knew you were going to ask that," he answered, wetting his lips, "I went to those woods so that I could feel closer to you, were nobody could see me crying like an idiot. I thought the long ride to and from there would be a good chance to clear my mind."
"Awe. I'm really glad you did that though, otherwise you probably would have never found me. Aren't I always close to you though? In your mind and in your heart? Plus, everyone cries, it's better coping than I managed..." I mumbled.
James looked at me from the corner of his eyes, his face softening into a sympathetic and concerned expression.
"Physically, I wanted to be closer to you. Like I told you, you mean so much to me... Listen, Trinity... I support everything you're going through. I'm not mad, because if my best friend were to kill my girlfriend, I would probably do the same thing. I'm here to help and support you, and not judge you," he replied.
I nodded, taking this in, and I remained quite for a long time, looking out the windshield as the sun dipped below the horizon.
It was long dark by the time we reached James' house. His parent's were home, in result to both of their cars in the driveway. When he parked, I hesitated to get out of the car.
"What's wrong, Trinity?" he asked, realizing that I wasn't moving.
"What will your parent's say? I don't have anything with me, no clothes or anything. I only have eighty dollars. I couldn't ask this much of your family. I'd be too much of a burden," I contemplated.
"Listen, my parents love you. They are just as crazy about you as I am. They will be supportive and I know they will supply you with the things you need. Don't worry about it." he responded.
"Okay then, I guess we go inside," I announced, still unsure.
"Come on, I'll carry you again," he smiled, his eyes sparkling.
I nodded again, in acceptance and he exited his side and came around to mine, doing the same thing he did to put me into the car. He lifted me up and out of the car bridal style, and locked the door behind me. I was carried into his house, and placed on the couch.
His mom, Sarah, was in the kitchen, making dinner. His dad, John, was in the office, and I could hear the slight guitar strumming of his acoustic guitar which I sometimes played. I smiled as the scene seemed so warming.
Once the food was in the oven, Sarah came out into the living room to look James over.
"Oh, good, you're home just in time for dinner! I see you brought...who?" his mom questioned, a bit of alarm in her voice, because she did not recognize me.
"It's Trinity, ma. I need to talk to you about a few things. Would that be okay?" James asked.
"Oh, hello Trinity. You look quite different, sweetheart. I almost didn't recognize you. James and I will be right back hun," she greeted, taking James into the backroom for a private talk.
I smiled and said hello. While they were in the back room, I decided to readjust my ace bandage so it was more comfortable, and turn on the TV. I turned it on to cartoon network, and to my delight, Adventure Time was playing.
I believe one can never get old for Adventure Time. James and I have watched it for the longest times, and even now we are both seventeen, we still insist on watching it. Our parents sigh and laugh at our childishness, but James and I will always be kids at heart. By the way, my favorite characters are Marceline and the Flame Princess.
I laughed, as I realized what episode it was. It was a rerun, the one with Princess Bubblegum and the Flame Princess, where Flame Princess was unsure of who she was, so Bubblegum had to run tests on her. It was the one where Flame overruled her father, and she got to return to her fiery home. It was one of our favorite episodes. I laughed as Bubblegum left Cinnamon Bun in charge of the Flame Princess, as this was the biggest mistake one could make. Cinnamon Bun was a softie, and he was bound to let the Flame Princess go!
Just as the episode was about to end, James and his mother came out of the back room, and out to the living room. They sat on either side of me on the couch. I muted the TV, and James was suppressing a laugh.
"What?" I giggled, waggling my eyebrows at him.
"I remember this episode. It's one of our favorites. Did you enjoy it?" he teased.
"You bet!" I laughed, throwing my hands in the air. I quickly quieted down though, because I caught the vibes that I should be taking what they were about to discuss seriously. I sat still and said, "lay it on me..."
"James and I have talked things over. He told me about how you escaped from the hospital and the whole Deston situation, and we both think it's best for you to stay here for a while until things get better. Don't worry, you won't be a nuisance, James is happy to have you, and you are like a second daughter to John and me." Sarah explained.
"Yeah, I mean you are like the best thing that ever happened to me Trinity. Please stay with me?" James pleaded.
"Of course I'll stay with you. Thank you guys do much for all that you are doing for me. It means a ton," I answered them sincerely.
"You guys go on upstairs then. Dinner will be ready in about a half hour," Sarah motioned for us to go upstairs.
Again, James volunteered to carry me up the stairs.
"James, I think I'm capable of walking up some steps. Plus, I've got the ace bandage. You don't need the weight of me while trying to get yourself up the stairs," I smirked.
"Alright, if you insist," he chuckled.
We tramped upstairs and into his room, which was surprisingly neat. Probably because he hasn't left his bed in a while. Even his bed was made though, and it looked nice. I hated to mess it up, but we ended up sitting on it.
James grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes.
"Thank you for staying. Thank you for not leaving me. I thought I was going to lose you." His breath tickled my face as he leaned in closer to me.
I closed the gap between us, kissing him slow and gently. It was a nice kiss. Not one of those kisses where I-want-to-have-sex-with-you-now was lingered in the air, but an innocent kiss where the only thing that mattered in the moment was each other. It felt good for once, to let Carlisle go, and in that moment, I swear we were infinite. Until his mom called up the stairs that dinner was ready.
"Damn," James said, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
We headed downstairs to find Sarah and John already at the dinner table.
