Audrey Street, 14

Dakota and Louis' flat / Bedroom

“Where is it,” Dakota, who aggravated, muttered as she rummaged through her jewelry box. “Goddammit, did he throw it out?”

She was afraid. If the necklace she was looking for was gone, Louis must have thrown it out, which meant he knew she still had it, which meant he would be furious. That was the thing, Dakota tried to avoid at any cost.

“Fuck, fuck fuck!” Dakota swore as she ran around the creaky flat, flipping stacks of stained magazines and books around in search for the necklace. Everywhere she brought her fingers they would shake, partially from her rough way home. She copied Louis’ actions and went into a train with no ticket, but of course the poor girl got caught and thrown off.

She walked the rest way home in the pouring rain.

Dakota was in the living room now, flinging dark coloured purple pillows in the air. She even dismantled the couch, but was left with distress.

Twenty minutes had already passed, and Dakota only left one room out of her search plan; Louis’ office. A place where Louis went, for a few minutes or a few hours depending on the day. A room filled with answers that people desired to know, people who had the right to know, a place with dangerous secrets that if anyone knew those, they would be killed – and also a place strictly forbidden for Dakota to enter.

She knew exactly where the key was, retrieved it and pushed it in the lock. Turning it twice, the heavy sound of the lock unlocked. The door was open.

She pushed it open, flicking the light switch, which provided a bit of light. She didn’t have much time to look around and view, she quickly searched for her piece of jewelry and would leave.

She didn’t understand what had driven her with such motivation to find the necklace. It was the necklace her first love gave to her – a necklace that reminded her of Harry. And whenever she would look down at the small golden crescent moon, she would think of, Harry as well as exhilaration.

Dakota was merely frustrated that she couldn’t find a thing that used to bring her happiness. Holding the door open, ready to leave, Dakota’s eyes caught on a shoebox squished under a drawer.

She went on her knees and pulled it closer towards her, throwing the box off the lid. Inside were a bunch of folders, within many, many white pages. She threw them out of the box, searching for her golden necklace.

She couldn’t believe her eyes. Her necklace was there. She quickly grabbed it and inspected it. It hadn’t been very damaged, but Louis did take it from her. Louis. He saw it, and he just stole it without her permission.

She crushed the necklace tightly in her palm and memories began to flood back. From when Harry and Dakota where in Rome together in 2012, or when they both took cooking class and Harry put her to shame with his talents of baking.

She smiled at those memories. She never had real memories with Louis. Sure, she seemed to be happy with him, and she really did love him. He was always there for her, even if she left, he would always be there, and that was something that Harry didn’t have. He would leave her any moment of the day and that destroyed Dakota so much, Harry didn't even notice it.

Filling the files back in the shoebox, she couldn't help but sneak a bit. She was so curious to why there would be stacks upon stacks of paper in a shoebox, so she glanced around a bit.

As soon as she opened the file she was met with a young mans face. He seemed to be very young. He was handsome too. He had these typical blue eyes and russet coloured hair, with a sloppy grin. Under him was his name (Dakota assumed) Jack Barret. She went to the next page and was greeted with someone else. Another man, slightly older with a picture and his name beneath. Then she went to the next, and the next and the next until she couldn’t bare it anymore.

She read the title of the folder.

               ‘DECEASED

The presence of fear was all over Dakota as she tossed the folder back in the shoebox and pushed it back under the drawer.

Dakota knew what Louis did when he left the house. She knew what job he had, and she knew how much he had hurt other people. The worst part of this was, any normal human would be completely mortified of having their lover kill people if they run out of time to give a certain thing, but for Dakota, she felt as if it was his duty. As if it was okay. He always had told her, it was normal in the world they lived in. And every time he said, ‘our’ she would scream in nothing but bliss.

As she was pushing it back where she found it, tears streaming down her face, she was too busy to hear the front door open.

               “Dakota?”

No, no, no! Dakota thought, please don't find me. No! No!

Louis, a frustrated young man stood at the door of his office – a place strictly forbidden for people like Dakota.

“What the hell are you doing in here, Dakota?”
