"They're both gonna wind up our responsibility" Mal complained
"Not Necessarily, Bart, impulse is staying with Joan and Jay Garrick in Central city, and Roy the original speedy is recuperating at Royal Memorial hospital in Star City. Arrows green and red are watching over him, and Luna will be watching over him when they are not there" Nightwing explains
"Mm-hm they're both gonna wind up our responsibility," Mal says
"Doesn't everything? I mean where are we on identifying the lights new partner" Conner says
"No progress" Nightwing sighs pinching his nose
"This partner of there's, is very skilled at staying concealed but we will get a lead soon enough" I say putting a hand on Nightwings shoulder
We hear giggling as we see la'gann and Mgann walk in flirting
"La'gann don't eat so fast" she says
"I can't help it Angelfish! The idea of cooking crabs is amazing enough, but making them into little cakes?" He said as he continues to eat the crab cakes on the levitating plate
"You're gonna choke" she says
"If only" superboy whispers
"Here let me" Mgann says flirtatiously putting a cake into his mouth
"If that's not true love I don't know what is, Chum" la'gann says
"What have I told you two about-" I begin to say
"Oh don't get a fishhook up your butt blue jay," lagoon boy says
"Excuse me" I say giving him a stern glare this worries M'gann but then she smiles at him grabbing his hand
I roll my eyes and walk up to superboy
"If they don't stop I think I might vomit on lagoon boy" I say
I may be 21 but I hate PDA
"Call me when it's time for the briefing" superboy says

The Zeta tube speaks and glows then Artemis walks in full uniform
"Time for the briefing" Nightwing says
"Artemis" Mgann says excitedly flying over to her nearly dropping the plate of crab cakes if it weren't for lagoon boy catching it
"Hi M'gann" she says
"How's Wally!" Megan asks
"He's...Wally" she says we all laugh
I hug her
"What's up Luna!" She says
"Just training newbies, some still need more than others" I say glancing at lagoon boy
"Welcome back girl" Mal says
"Hey Mal!" She says
"We have so missed around here" Conner says
"Conner!" She says excitedly
"I relish this opportunity to finally fight beside you, Archer." La'gaan says
Artemis gives him a weird look
"Um thanks? La'gann" Artemis says
"Okay Gamma squad listen up. The mission is Cape Canaveral. Covert Op to safeguard the first Earth-Mars Com Sat. There are people out there that don't even like the idea of aliens. And will do anything to scrub the launch." Nightwing says
Mgann looks down sadly
"But that's why I came back. Not all of us feel that way" Artemis says
"She's right" I say smiling at M'gann which helps lift her spirit
"So why are you two going" Mal asks
"Because, I am still a mission examiner and also even though I recommend that I don't go into the field, Nightwing is persistent, and well I'm bored" I admit
"let's just say after running this team for a year I'm peckish for a little action" nightwing says
"Alright everyone to the bioship" I say
"Alright superboy I hate to say it but you are going to have to wear supermans suit" I say
"Uh what" he says sounding unpleased
"Since superman and the original six members of the league are in space, we need you and miss Martian to pose as your mentors and talk to the public" Nightwing explains
"I don't know if you noticed, I don't exactly look as old as Kal-el" Superboy explains
"M'gann will be levitating you from above while she will be taking questions as Manhunter." I explain
"I hate monkey suits" he mumbles
I roll my eyes
"Just get into uniform and get to work," I say
"Lagoon boy you're up." Nightwing says
He stand up getting ready to dive
"Remember this is a covert mission. If you find yourself in trouble contact one of us" i say
"Yeah right as if I am going to need help from you" he says
"Get into position" I say through gritted teeth
He dives
"M'gann I am not even gonna ask why you're with him" I say pinching my nose
"Alright, nightwing, Artemis time for us to deploy." I say
They nod and we jump off landing in our spot near the rocket
We keep an eye out on each side
"If nothing else, we have a nice view" Artemis says
The sunset is very beautiful
"Yes, its very soothing" I say
"Miss M, link us up" Nightwing says
"Link established" she says
"Good. Begin Aerial sweep of the cape's perimeter" he says
"Hey boss. I'd be happy to join my angelfish on that assignment" lagoon boy says
"Negative lagoon boy. You're right where I need giving me coverage in the sky, land and water"
"Besides, you know the rules. No fraternizing with teammates on a mission, even if they are a couple" I say
We sit there for maybe 20 minutes in silence until Nightwing speaks up
"I know I'm not Wally's favorite person right now, but it is nice to have you back" he says smiling
"Yeah it sure is nice to have another girl around again. I mean don't get me wrong Mgann is great, y'know when she isn't smacking lips with her punk boyfriend" I say
"It's nice to be back, I didn't realize how much I was missing it, which is pretty much exactly what Wally is afraid of. He's worried the rush that comes with the mask will get its hooks in and I won't give it up until my dying day." She says
"I know exactly what you mean" he smiles
"Agreed." I say leaning on forward on the post
"The hook, the adrenaline, it's hard to give it up, even if you have been gone awhile. I would know" I say, "I took my leave of absence and I still came back to this, it's a life I don't plan on giving up anytime soon"
"Woah heads up minnows. Looks like we got bad guys. Black manta troopers, working on some kind of platform beneath the surface. Just off shore. I'm taking them down!" Lagoon boy says
"Delay that! wait for backup!" Nightwing says
"I'll scrounge a rebreather from the cargo hold, and help the rookie out" superboy says
"Rookie? Neptunes beard! I don't need any help from the boy of steel" lagoon boy says
"Lagoon boy stand down!" Nightwing says
"La'gann follow Nightwings orders and stand down now before you get yourself killed!" I say
"Sorry your breaking up" La'gann says making static sounds
"There is no static in the psychic link!" Nightwing says irritated
"La'gann stand down now!" I say irritated for his stupidity
"Company!" Artemis says
We look down and see manta troopers
Artemis shoots her arrow making a zip line she uses her bow
Dick uses one of his gadgets and I use the bo staff whip he got me for Christmas 5 years ago
We land on the opposite side of the wall of the manta troopers
"Superboy! You have that rebreather?" Nightwing asks
"Negative. La'gann didn't restock" superboy says
"Then take the helm. Miss Martian Gill up and help lagoon boy. Superboy we need cover fire" nightwing orders
"Acknowledged. Bioship reconfigured for manual flight" Miss M says
"La'gann! I'm on my way!" She says
Superboy shoots at manta troopers and covers us
"That's our cue!" Artemis says
She was about to jump but Nightwing pulled her down before she got shot
"I know you're rusty, but are you trying to get yourself killed!!" Nightwing says
"You know better than to jump before given an all clear!" I say
A missile comes toward us
"We're on the wrong side of this wall." Artemis says
"Really? No duh!" I say
"Superboy!" Nightwing calls out
"On it!" He says
Superboy shoots the missile before it hits the air craft
An alarm goes off and the space shuttle begins getting ready to launch
"We are really on the wrong side of this wall!" Artemis says once again
"The troopers helmets! Designed to enhance vision under water right?" Artemis says
She pulls an arrow out of her quiver
"The flarrow! Smart idea!" I say
She shoots her arrow up which blinds the troopers
"Move!" Nightwing says
We jump over the wall getting to where we need to be
We begin battling troopers
I do a spin kicking a trooper in the face, then swiping another's feet out from under him
Artemis is attacks but she defeats about 3 troopers and Nightwing looks at her surprised
"What? I'm not that rusty." She says
"They've taken La'gann! I'm going after him!" Mgann says
That idiot!!!
"Priority is the missiles! There are too many! I'm not keeping up!" Superboy says
Kaldur then pops up with a trooper on each side of him
"Kaldur! You don't want to do this!" Artemis says
"I believe I do!" He says, he uses his abilities to lift water out of the ocean and nearly drown us
Kaldur attempts to shoot a mini missile at the shuttle but Artemis stops it
"No rust on me" she says
"Artemis behind you!" Nightwing shouts
We turn around and see Nightwing knocked out by Kaldur
I then go after him, he tried punching me I block it. I sweep my feet under him, he jumps than punches me in the face knocking me down
Him and Artemis battle until I see the worst thing happened
He stabbed her, the sword went right through her back
"Welcome back" he says to her
"NOOOO!!" I scream letting my powers loose
It does not faze aqualad, because he clearly has the proper tech
"Artemis!!!" Nightwing yells catching her
"Aqualad you'll pay for this!!" I say running towards him the anger rushing over me
He punches me again making me fall to the ground
"Another time, old friend" he said bitterly
He disappears
I get up and run over to Artemis
"Artemis! Artemis, it's going to be okay, you are going to be fine" I say as Nightwing gives her CPR
Superboy and Mgann run up to us in shock
"I...I don't hear her heartbeat" Superboy says
Nightwing keeps trying for about a minute
Finally he stops
"She's dead." He says
I feel the tears swell up in my eyes
I face the ocean and scream, I let it all out, the darkness flickers, it's coming for me
I regain control and turn back around
Superboy grabs me and pulls me into a hug and I cry in his arms
Another life, another death, another friend lost
"You guys go ahead, I'll take her body to a morgue" Nightwing says quietly
We nod and leave
*later that night at the cave*
We all stand in the dining room. Every member of this team. Even rocket and Zatanna come to the cave
We mourn Artemis
This has been the hardest death this team has had to deal with especially since Tula
I stand next to Superboy looking down
He puts a hand on my shoulder as Mal, and Karen walk up to us
"We'll find La'gann. And Aqualad" Conner says
"No doubt. Where's Nightwing. He should be here for this" Mal says
Superboy sighs
"He went to go tell Wally" he says with sad eyes
Mal and Karen look at each other in sorrow
"All I know, is Kaldur is going to pay for what he's done. I'm gonna make sure of it." I say angrily and walk to my room in the cave
Third person pov
Nightwing waits at the docks for his friend to arrive
When he hears a noise he looks up
"Wally?" He questions
"No" Aqualad says walking out
Dick narrows his eyes
Wally then walks out with a hooded figure
The figure removes their good and reveals Artemis
"I take it our ruse was successful?" Aqualad asks
"Almost too successful. The team and the league are in mourning. They may never forgive us. Especially Blue Jay" dick says
"Which is why I wanted her in on the secret in the first place Dick, if kaldur hadn't been wearing the right tech she could have killed him" Artemis points out
"It's too late for that now. She truly believes you are dead" dick said
"And still only we 4 know the secret?" Kaldur asks
"This secret and the other. That you've been deep under cover within black manta's organization since leaving the team. How'd it go on that end?" Dick asks
"Successful as well. I have proven my loyalty to my biological father. He is moving me up the ladder bringing me closer to the light and their unknown partner" Kaldur explains
"Not without cost Kaldur, the Com Sat wasn't supposed to be destroyed and La'gann definitely wasn't supposed to be captured" dick says
"It was the only way to save his life and maintain my cover" kaldur says
"I'm not blaming you," dick says putting a hand on Kaldurs shoulder, "I know you have been forced to make impossible decisions, like choosing between saving the kroloteans on Melina island"
"Or saving my friends. And I will find a way to save La'gann. You have my word." He says
"So what now?" Artemis asks
Dick pulls out a necklace and puts it around Artemis's neck
"Uh, dude, why are you giving bling to my dead girlfriend" Wally says
"Glamour charm. Courtesy of Zatanna. Physiomorphics spell I think. She said it backwards" dick says
"Wow. You look...exactly the same." Wally said
"To the four of us and only us. But to anyone else you're an entirely different person." Dick explains
"The more impressive trick is how you got something so specific from Zatanna without revealing who or what it was for" Artemis say
"We have history" dick smirks
"Dog" Wally teases
"It is time" Kaldur says
Artemis and Wally hug and kiss each other then pull apart
"What could go wrong" Artemis jokes
This makes Wally laugh
"Don't say that," he chuckles
Artemis and Kaldur leave
"We're through the hard part, they're in" dick says
"Who are you kidding. It only gets more dangerous from here" Wally says
