"All of her words felt like knives stabbing me over and over again, except these wounds wouldn't heal over time" -Sumayah Ahmed

Chapter Seven:

What The..?

⭐️Sumayah Ahmed⭐️

When I got home, to say I received an earful from my grandparents would be an understatement. I got the biggest lecture of my life just because I left the restaurant earlier than I was supposed to. My grandma looked so angry as if there was steam coming out of her ears! Right now I'm in the car with my uncle, waiting for him to park the car.

"It'll just be a minute!" I told my uncle as I got out of his car to go into Barnes & Noble. After seeing The Kite Runner yesterday I really wanted to get the book once again and reread it. It gives me something to do other than stay at Ayeyo and Awowa's restaurant all day and be bored. I quickly went inside and purchased the book. When I was leaving I accidentally bumped into someone and before I could apologize they grabbed the book for me. Once I looked up I stopped breathing, noticing the girl in front me. I then faltered a step in pure shock. We look exactly alike.

Exactly alike!

How the hell was this possible!? I then looked passed her and saw the girl that had mistaken me for her the other day.

"Oh my god, it's you..." The girl that looked like me said as she placed her hand on her mouth. What does she mean it's me? What the hell is going on!? "I-I'm Sahra..." My look-a-like stuttered after a moment of silence. I took another step back as I shook my head from side to side, not believing what I was seeing. This is insane... How could we look so much alike? I've heard of people having look-a-likes somewhere in the world but I can't even begin to fathom how much we look alike. "Wh-How is this...possible?" I stuttered.

She looked around and noticed that there were people staring at us. "I'll tell you all that I know but not here."She indicated for us to get out of the store but I didn't move a step. I don't know what's going on but what I do know is that I'm not going anywhere.

"You..." I stared wide eyed at the girl.

"Yeah, me. It's nice to see you again but can we please go somewhere else so my friend can I explain everything she knows to you?" She almost pleaded. The girl, who's name I remember her saying what Sahra, gave me a pleading look as well. Before replying, I got out my phone and told my uncle that I'd come home later and that he could leave. After he left I walked with the two girls into one of their cars and sat in the backseat. "Okay you have two minutes to explain everything to me." I demanded.

Sahra reached into her purse and handed me what looked like a letter. "Read this first and then I'll explain all that I currently know." She handed it to me. I read the letter with creased eyebrows, it mostly talked how her mom was sorry towards her for not being able to take care of her. I then saw a part that caught my attention.

I'm finally able to tell you something I wasn't able to ever since you were born, it's about your father and sister.

Surely she wasn't talking about me and Abo...right?

Yes, you have a twin sister. If you look into this envelope you'll find a picture of the both of you and your father.

"Here." She put a picture on my lap. It was flipped over so I couldn't see who was in it and a part of me didn't want to turn it around. Taking a deep breath, I flipped it around. My eyes started to water once I saw the dark man in the picture holding two baby girls. I immediately recognized the tall dark skinned man as my father. No, I shook my head violently as tears continued to fall down my cheeks. This isn't possible.

Abo wouldn't lie to me like this... He wouldn't keep the fact that I had a twin sister away from me. No, I shook my head in disbelief. I refuse to believe it. "I know it's a lot to digest, trust me when I saw this letter I freaked out. But-" I cut her off before she could say anything else. "I don't believe you, I don't believe this! My father wouldn't keep something like this from me." I was fuming by this point. And if it was true then that means that my mother was...

...If this was true then that means that the one person I dreamt of meeting my whole entire life was no longer on this earth and that's something I could not handle. I quickly got out of the car and slammed the door behind me. Sahra was quick to follow, "I understand you feel overwhelmed and you don't want to believe this but here's my number if you change your mind." She said as she put a piece of paper in my hand. After that she got inside of her car and drive away.

I looked at the crumbled up piece of paper in my hands that had her number on it. For some reason I couldn't find it in me to throw the paper away. I guess because part of me believed all of this to be true... No matter how much I didn't want it to be, I still knew it was and that's the sad part. All of the proof I need was right in front of me.

* * *

When I got home I tried to go to my room as quickly as possible but failed when my grandma called me into the living room. I mentally groaned as I walked inside, trying not to roll my eyes. "Yes Ayeyo?" I asked in a tired tone. All I want to do right now is go upstairs, crawl into my bed and pray with all my might that this whole entire day was just a dream.

"Where were you? I thought I told you to come home an hour ago?!" She snapped at me. Calm down Sumayah... She's your grandmother, you can't go off on her, I chanted in my mind. It took everything in me not to give her any attitude at this moment. "I'm sorry Ayeyo it's just-" She stopped me mid sentence by holding up her index finger.

"I don't want to hear any of your endless excuses! First, yesterday you left the restaurant when your Awowa and I specifically told you that you couldn't and now you're coming home late?! What is wrong with you? I know you pull this stuff on your soft father but don't you dare think you could pull this stuff on me young lady! I wonder how you think it's okay to behave this way," She let a chortle before adding, "Must be in your mother's genes. I know I shouldn't have let your father marry an indi-"

"Hoyo!" Adeer exclaimed as he walked inside the house. My eyes watered to the brink as I took in everything she said. All of her words felt like knives stabbing me over and over again, except these wounds wouldn't heal over time. "What? I was telling the tru-" Before she could say more Adeer jumped in again. "That's enough." He said in a deadly calm voice. He then looked at me with concern and wiped my tears away.

I shook his hand away slightly and turned to my grandmother. "You know what?" I scoffed mirthlessly with anger shooting up my spine. "Instead of pointing out what's wrong with me, why not focus on what's wrong with you? First of all why don't we address the fact that you've always hated me because of the fact that I'm part Indian, and you know it. But what's wrong with that? Huh?! I can't help who I am. But you, on the other hand are ignorant and what's most sad about that is you're biased against your own grandchild. Oh and let's not forget about the fact that you knew that I had a twin, didn't you?" I looked at both of them and the looks on their faces said enough. "I got my answers." I quickly went up into my room and slammed my door shut. Digging into the pockets of my hoodie, I grabbed the piece of paper that Sahra handed to me and dialed her number. I want answers and I want them now.

"Hello?" She picked up.

"Hey it's me, Sumayah." I said.

"Who?"

"Your twin." I responded with a sigh. Those words felt so weird to say out loud. "Lets get to the bottom of this."
