Author's Note: This may be a little rough. It was kind of last minute. I know you'll probably have questions, but they'll be answered in the next chapter or so. I'll probably have to at least do 2 more chapters to wrap this up. Bare with me loves ♡
Part 2: A blast from Jay's past
Things have been tough for the unit, but they were all getting along okay. It figured, you know, that things would start going to hell just when things were going great.
It had been a month since him and Erin made their confessions. Things had been going so great, and they weren't bad now, it's just Jay's past had came back to haunt him. A person he thought he'd never see again, but they were back, and he wasn't sure how to handle it.
Jay wasn't sure how to handle it because, it was a past relationship that he never told Erin about, and he wasn't sure how she was going to handle it.
Keeping secrets wasn't something he liked doing with Erin, especially after they opened up to one another the way they have. He really didn't want this to ruin his relationship with Erin.
Veronica, that was her name, his ex. One day while he was at the Precinct, Platt came and told him that he had a visitor. When he got downstairs, there she was, a blast from the past, someone he wanted to keep in the past.
"You're a hard person to find," Veronica said, with a smirk across her face. Jay was not amused.
"What the hell are doing here?" Jay asked, keeping his voice lowered, but his tone still full of annoyance.
"Is that anyway to talk to an old flame?"
Jay could tell, just by that sentence and the way she delivered it, she was hoping to piss him off.
"Whatever you want, Veronica, is going to have to wait. I'm busy with work."
Jay wanted her gone before Erin saw her. It wasn't a conversation he wanted to have right now. Plus, if it would lead to a fight, it was something he wanted to avoid. He didn't want to fight with Erin, not over his ex.
They discussed a place to meet up, and she headed on her way, Jay was so relieved when Veronica finally left. Not only because he was annoyed to see her, but also because she left without being seen by Erin.
Was it horrible for him to be meeting Veronica for drinks? He had no feelings for her, he actually regretted ever being with her, but the fact he was with Erin, someone he was in a committed relationship with, was it horrible that he lied to her, told her he was going to hang out with Ruzek for a bit? Ruzek, wasn't thrilled about lying for Jay, but when Jay explained what was going on, he went against his better judgement, and covered for Jay. He'd owe Adam big time for this.
Veronica arrived first, so, she was already at the bar drinking a cocktail, waiting on Jay to arrive. When he finally did and joined her, she could see the annoyance on his face.
"Oh lighten up. It won't kill you to hear me out on what I need to tell you."
Jay gave her the, you know, are you kidding me look. He felt like she had a lot of nerve to ask that of him.
"Just get to the point. I have somewhere to be, someone waiting for me."
That peaked Veronica's attention, but decided to not push it and just get to the point. She knew why Jay hated her, or was angry with her, though she figured hate was the right term for how he felt about her. They were in a relationship long ago, back when he was in the Academy. They were somewhat serious, they probably could've been a lot more serious if she had of walked on him.
Yes, she left Jay. It was after he graduated the academy and was working his first job. She left as he was working the graveyard shift. She packed her things and pretty much ran away. That life wasn't for her. The worry he'd make it home alive ate at her what little time they were together once he officially became a cop. She didn't even leave him a Dear John letter. She knew that was heartless, not telling him why, but she had a reason, her fear got in the way of her doing the right thing.
"Look, Jay, I know the way things ended with us wasn't natural, but I'm here to tell you why I left, which is why I'm here." With a sigh, Veronica looked down, pausing for a moment before going on;
"I was scared, not only because of your job, but because I knew we weren't meant to be and something I found out that day made me realize that I had to leave."
Jay rolled his eyes, not sure where she was going with this, but was hoping she'd hurry the hell up and get it over with already.
"I actually have two confessions. One being, you were right, that day we got into a fight about Jack. I was seeing him behind your back. I was lonely, and I know that's not an excuse, but it's true. I was lonely and needed the affection of someone, you weren't around.." Jay stopped her.
"Are you kidding me right now? Did you seriously come all this way just to tell me that I was right about you two? I don't care Veronica! You two were meant for one another."
Before Jay could continue on, Veronica interrupted; "I got pregnant Jay. I found out I was pregnant the day I left. I didn't know who the father was, I was ashamed, so I left."
As she got choked up, Jay was sitting there in silence, stunned by her confession, not even sure of what to say. Was she telling him that he might be a father? His mind wandered, but he also thought of what she could've done. She said she was ashamed, so, did she have the baby, give up for adoption, or worse case scenario, had it taken care of?
Before he could ask or say anything, she started up again.
"I had the baby, a boy, and I kept him. I can tell you're wondering."
"What's his name?"
"Eric," She answered.
"I don't want to come off rude, but what do you want Veronica? What do you want from me? I have a life here, I'm in love with someone, someone who I want to spend my life with, then there's my job,"
"I'm not here to ask you to give up your life Jay," Veronica interrupted. "I'm here ask you if you'd be willing to do a paternity test? Eric's health isn't the greatest right now, and the doctors would like to know who his father is, you know, so they can get family history and whatever. "
As much as he was angry with her about their past, he did feel sorry for her. He didn't know what was wrong with her son, but he could only imagine how much stress she was putting on herself.
"We could go to Med," She said, since his silence was deafening. "That way you'll know right away, won't have to travel or anything. I've already asked Jack, he's having it done in New York, then they're sending the results to Georgia. That's where I've ended up over the years."
This was a lot for Jay to take in. What was he going to do if this boy was his? Would Erin still love him? Hell, he wasn't sure if she was going to after finding out about Veronica. He was ready dreading this conversation with Erin.
"Can I think about it? I mean, this is a lot to take in," he asked, feeling sorry for even asking her this. This was about her son, not herself. Was he being selfish for wanting to think it over.
"Oh yes! Please do. I'll be here in Chicago until Sunday. I know this is asking a lot of you, that this could possibly be something that shakes your world up, and I'm sorry about that. I should've told you years ago and I'm sorry about that. I don't expect you to ever forgive me, I just want to put this behind us and move on."
They talked for a little bit longer before Veronica headed on her way. Jay was left alone, beer in hand, and his mind spinning with all this new information. What was he going to do? How was he going to tell Erin about all of this? That was his biggest dilemma at the moment.
Hurting Erin was not something he wanted to do, but what if this did hurt Erin? Would she leave him, would their relationship be over? Could she possibly look past all of this, him never telling her about Veronica, then adding this possible kid, could she let it go and live happily with him, or would it be too much for her? He was terrified of what the possible outcome could be.
The sad part was, he wasn't realizing how he was acting after Veronica's confession, was affecting Erin. He was so lost in what to do, that he had no idea that Erin was worried about him, and wondering if she should be concerned about their relationship.
All the thoughts running through his mind, he was oblivious to a lot of things right now. It was why he was working late right now, struggling to get his paperwork done. He did the best he could though. Once he was finished, he gathered his things to leave and head home.
It wasn't too late, so, he was hoping to beat Erin home, if not, he hoped she was still awake. It was now or never. He had to tell Erin everything. He was terrified, nervous as hell, but she was the woman she loved, he couldn't keep secrets from her, not like this one.
On the drive home, he kept rehearsing over and over again on what he was going to say. He even took a longer way home just so he could work on his nerves before getting this all over with.
How was this going to play out? Would they argue, then make up, or could their relationship be in jeopardy? Jay wasn't sure, but he knew that losing her would be the end for him, so, he was praying they'd be able to overcome this.
But first, Jay needed to come clean to Erin, just as Veronica did to him. He only hoped Erin wouldn't hate him.
