You and Steve wait excitedly for Bucky to get back from work. It's his 21st birthday today and although it was planned out to be just a normal day you and Steve are dead set on making it the best day ever for your best friend Bucky.
You took the liberty of taking the day off work to make Bucky a cake. A simple vanilla cake and vanilla icing; his favourite. Steve bought some candles on his way home from work too and now as you put the finishing touches to the cake Steve sits by the window on lookout.
As far as Bucky knows nothing special besides your guys normal birthday ritual is happening tonight.
"He's coming! He's coming!" Steve suddenly shouts just as your adjusting the position of the last candle on the cake.
The kitchen turns into mayhem as the two of you rush around.The key rattles in the door and then a tired, slightly glum looking Bucky walks in with his face to the floor.
"Surprise!" Both you and Steve shout as you jump in front of him revealing the cake.
His face lights up and a huge smile plasters his lips as he sees the two of you and his little surprise.
"Aw you two!" He beams and extends his arms out to the both of you. "Come here!"
You quickly put the cake down and walk into his embrace and share a big group hug full of grunts and 'aw's' as he wiggles you around playfully. It's super cheesy but that's just the way you three are.
"Thank you guys." Bucky smiles contently and kisses you on the temple and pats Steve on the back. "You didn't have to."
"Yes we did. 21's a big birthday!" You exclaim.
Bucky rolls his eyes and smiles shyly.
"How was work?" Steve asks.
"Alright I guess." Bucky shrugs. "Nothing amazing happened. Don't really think that anyone knew it was my birthday."
"Well of course they won't know if you don't tell them!" Steve chuckles.
"I just don't want to make a big deal!" He wines.
"But you deserve to get made a fuss of on just one day of the year!" You insist. "Now go and get changed so that we can go to the river."
"Yes ma'am." He says and salutes you, mocking your bossiness.
"Go!" You laugh after rolling your eyes.
He chuckles before running off to his room.
While he's getting ready you and Steve light the candles on his cake so that he can blow them out before you head off.
Every year for all three of your guys birthdays you buy a big roast dinner and chips and go down to your special spot at the river and swim in the water hole and eat dinner there for the evening. Steve's birthday is always the best because it's right in the middle of summer so it's warm but today the weather isn't too bad anyway so it should be fun.
Bucky comes back out wearing shorts and a button up shirt.
"Alright are we ready?" He huffs and claps his hands together.
"You have to blow out the candles first!" You exclaim.
"Oh my god." He chuckles but comes over and blows them out anyway.
His long eyelashes close and his soft looking pink lips pucker a little as he does so and you can't help but admire his face.
"Let's hope your wish comes true." You smile as he straightens up.
"We'll see later doll." He says and winks at you.
What does he mean by that?
Brushing it off you cut three big slices from the cake and you each dig into them.
"Mmmm, (Y/N) this is amazing." Bucky practically moans.
"It tastes like I'm eating heaven." Steve sighs.
"Oh c'mon guys it can't be that good." You giggle.
"When all you've had to eat all week is rice and bread it's like eating with the queen." Bucky states.
"Alright present time!" You say, changing the subject.
"Oh guys you really shouldn't have!" Bucky exclaims.
"Shut up Bucky you know you want it." You smirk.
A cheeky grin spreads across his face and you burst out laughing.
"I'll go first." Steve chuckles.
He hands Bucky a neatly brown paper wrapped rectangle. Bucky takes it and opens it to find a case of fine cigars.
"Oh man this is awesome! I've been wanting some more cos I've run out!" Bucky exclaims.
"I know cos I tried to pinch some of yours and there were none." Steve smirks.
"You shouldn't be smoking Steve." Bucky says seriously.
Trust him. More concerned about Steve's health then about the fact that he stole something.
"Okay my turn!" You laugh.
You hand over the small black box that you had in your pocket and Bucky takes it, eyeing you curiously. When he opens it he gasps. You smile excitedly knowing that he must like it.
"Doll you shouldn't have. This is too much." He says quietly as he holds up the fancy brown leather strap watch admiring it.
"Oh trust me it'll benefit me just as much as you. Maybe you'll actually be on time for once." You joke.
He shakes his head and laughs softly as he puts it on and holds his wrist out to see what it looks like.
"Thank you." He sighs. "Both of you. This is great."
"No problem Buck you deserve it." You shrug and smile up at him.
"Okay that's great, can we finally go now please?" Steve urges.
The three of you swing by the local roast store and get roast lamb sandwiches and chips. Bucky insists on going to the diner and shouts you and Steve both milkshakes too.
So with your big load of food you head down to the waterhole and set up. You all eat first since your starving despite eating the cake only just earlier and besides, the food smells delicious. Once your full to the brim Bucky's the first to make a move.
He rips off his shirt and dives straight off the rock you're all sitting on and into the water. Damn, you never get tired of looking at a shirtless Bucky despite living with him and him walking around shirtless rather frequently, that shit is fine.
"Wooh! That is refreshing." He hoots as he comes up and flicks his hair out of his eyes, spraying you guys with water.
You squeal and jump out of the way.
"Get in you two!" He shouts.
Both of you quickly strip down to your togs and canon ball in. It's absolutely freezing and you come up gasping for breath from the shock of it.
"Bit cold there (Y/N/N)?" Bucky chuckles coming over to you.
"A little." You shiver.
He places his hands on your arms and rubs them up and down in an attempt to warm you up.
"Hey Bucky what did you wish for earlier?" You ask to avoid an awkward silence.
"I can't tell you know can I? Or else it won't work." He smiles sweetly at you.
"Oi you two love birds! Break it up and come swim with me!" Steve yells and splashes the two of you.
You blush and look down. You and Bucky are not together but you definitely wish you were.
You spend the next hour or so hanging out at the river before getting dressed and heading into town to the pub. It's great fun and by midnight you are all definitely more than a little tipsy and nearly all danced out.
Until a slow song comes on that is.
'Wise men say only fools rush in'
"Oh I love this song!" You gasp as you and Bucky sit on some bar stools while Steve is off ordering some more drinks.
'But I can't help falling in love with you'
"Well what are we waiting for then? Come dance with me." Bucky smiles softly and extends a hand to you.
You blush and take it, letting him lead you to the dance floor. He spins you around expertly and carefully, bringing you to be pressed against his chest firmly with one of your hands in his and one resting on his shoulder. He smiles down at you and you smile back. As the song continues he begins to gently and slowly sway to the beat.
Eventually you avert your gaze from his amazing blue eyes and you rest your head on his chest. He hums the words of the song quietly, causing his chest to vibrate a little. You close your eyes and relax into his embrace, feeling so comfortable in his touch, soaking in the moment.
Suddenly he starts singing the words.
"Take my hand, take my whole life too." He sings in a beautiful, low voice.
You look up at him and can't help but smile in admiration. Is there anything he can't do?
He removes his hand from yours and places two fingers under your chin instead and you end up wrapping both hands around his neck.
"Cause I can't help falling in love with you." He sings finally, grinning hopefully down at you and tilting your chin up so that you two are looking right at each other.
Then it happens. He leans down and presses his lips to yours. You kiss him back, slowly and softly. He tastes of Bourbon and whiskey, a perfect mixture and you breath in the sweet, addicting scent. Your lips stay moulded together until you need to come up for air.
After this you bury your head in the crook of his neck and hug him while he still sways slightly.
"You know this has officially been my best birthday so far?" He mumbles in your ear.
"Why's that?" You ask quietly.
"Because the wish I have been making since the year I first met you finally just came true." He smiles.
