Chapter Ten:

Detention? Ugh.

______________________

My heart rate accelerated when Cameron got closer and closer to me. His arms were outstretched and a smirk was plastered on his face. I had a feeling I looked completely stupid sitting there. My eyes were huge in confusion and I gulped.

Before I could run away from him, Cameron wrapped his strong arms around me and lifted me up over his shoulder. I screamed at first and felt all the blood rush to my face when I realized I had the perfect view of his butt. Well....

"Cameron! Put me down!" I shouted as I pounded my fists on his waist. It wasn't long before he did and I found myself in the middle of the gym floor. A few basketball's were still scattered on the floor and I watched Cameron pick one up. He tossed it right at my head, most likely trying to get me in the face with the ball. My reflexes kicked in when the ball was literally an inch away from my face so my hands caught it.

I peeked at Cameron past the ball and saw him gawking at me. One of his stupid smirks came along and made me drop the ball to rest at my side. I narrowed my eyes at him, knowing he was up to something.

"Let's see how well you can play a game." He told me, shooting the ball in his hands at the basket. I rolled around the rim before falling through the net and bouncing to the floor. Cameron jogged up to get it and put it on the tip of his finger, spinning it around cockily. I rolled my eyes and tossed the ball I had over my shoulders before agreeing to his challenge.

"Your on. First one to 20 wins." I said. Of course, at the time, I never even thought about us having to get back to our next class because by the time Cameron shot the the basket that allowed him to win th game, the tardy bell rang. Kids filled in the gym for their gym class and I about fainted. My French class was on the opposite end of the school and I had less than a minute to get to it. I glanced up at Cameron who I realized still needed to change into his regular clothes.

He dropped the ball in his hands on the floor and darted to the locker room. This was better, in a way, because now he can't gloat to me about how he won. He only won by two points! I had 18 and he got 20 right before the bell rang. I guess I still have a little pizzazz left in me.

I took off down the hallway, walking swiftly to my locker. Not having time to grab the correct books out of my locker, I looped my arm through the strap of my backpack and slammed my locker door shut swiftly.

I caught a glimpse of Cameron dashing out of the gym. He must have me to because he winked and took off down the hall. I blushed and glanced behind me, wondering if that was meant for me.

It totally was.

I am turning into such a girl. Ugh.

I continued down the hall until I reached the door to my French teachers room, Monsieur Parks, and stopped for a moment. He was going to explode. That's what he did to the other kids every time they came in late. You know, I'm always there on time so maybe he'll go easy on me.

I reluctantly knocked on the door and it was opened immediately by a student with the hall pass in there hands. My eyes widened in shock when I saw Monsieur Parks staring at me with his icy cold glare. I mentally groaned and dropped the hand I had knocked with to my side.

"Quel plaisir de vous joindre à nous, Miss Belle." He spoke to me. Of course, being an A+ student in his class, I knew that meant, "How nice of you to join us, Miiss Belle." I gave him an apologetic smile before scurrying to my seat. I was completely aware of all the pairs of eyes on me as I sat down.

"You'll serve an hour of detention after school," Monsieur Parks said in English to me as he wrote it on a slip and laid it on my desk. I ran my fingers over the pink sticky note and felt my cheeks redden. I had never gotten detention before and I didn't want start now. This is just great. Since I was sitting in the back and Monsieur Parks was sat up front at his desk that was facing towards the door, I reached for my phone in my pocket. I tapped on the message app and pulled it up, tapping on Cameron's name. Hoping that his phone was on silent, I quickly texted a "I'm going to kill you." And put my phone away. That's right, it was all his fault that we were both late. If we had detention together, I was going to strangle him on the spot.

Before the bell rang for the next class, out vice principal came across the intercom with a message. I grinned my backpack straps in my hands and waited for her to continue.

"During 8th period, I would like all students to report to the gym for a pep rally. The occasion is for the girls' basketball team who are leaving for championships this evening after school. Hope to see you there!" Mrs. Rodriguez spoke. The bell rang and everyone cleared out of the classroom, I still had my detention slip clamped in my hand. As sweaty as my hands were, I was sure that it was going to dissolve from the liquid. I was still a little hot from playing that basketball game earlier.

All through French class, I couldn't get my mind off of Cameron. How he reacted in our last conversation. I wanted to pretend like it didn't happen. Because let's face it, it didn't go near as planned.

I neared my locker to see Amber waiting for me. She had a giddy smile on her face which -if I remember correctly- meant that she had good news. I felt the corners of my lips twitch upwards at her as I approached her. Since I already had my books and junk stuffed in my backpack, I didn't need in my locker.

"Hey," I greeted her, a small smile to go with it. Amber's grin widened even more, "Hey, Soph! I have great news. It's so exciting." She was practically jumping up and down while her backpack was banging against her spine.

I laughed at her, "What is it?" Amber looped her arm through mine as we trudged towards the gym doors. Eighth period was about to start so we were going to get some good seats to the pep rally. It was best not to get the ones close to the band because they would blow our eardrums out. At any other pep rally, we'd sit near the top of the bleachers so we could see good, hear fine, and stay out of anyone elses way.

When Amber and I entered the gym, I saw that Cameron and Adam had thought of the same thing. Cameron was sitting on his hands looking around anxiously as his legs bounced up down. I gave him a weird look even though he couldn't see me.

"Anyways, It's Adam. Remember how I used to have a crush on him during basketball season? Well he asked me to go with him and his friend to this indoor mini-golf thing this weekend." She explained way over excitedly. Wait a second...

"What friend?" I asked her, trying not to sound to suspicious. We had both stopped at the doors of the gym as we talked.

"Cameron, I think." Amber tapped her chin and looked up at the ceiling as if in thought. Danielle had an evil smirk as she walked by us, obviously hearing everything Amber had just told me. I growled under my breath which only made her cackle. I grabbed Amber's arm and followed behind Danielle into the gym completely.

I was planning on sitting with Cameron and Adam until Danielle stalked her way up to them. Stuck in the crowd of kids filling the gym quickly, I watched as Cameron gave her small-unsure smile. She was asking about something, I could tell. Adam smiled at her as she talked and nodded his head while Cameron simply had a confused expression on his face but nodded anyway.

Danielle turned around towards our direction, smirking. She strutted down off the bleachers and walked past us, finally getting Amber's attention.

"Oh no." Amber muttered under her breath. I turned to her but kept moving us through the crowd. Her eyes were locked on the same place that Danielle was just at. She must've seen what happened and knew what was going on. I sure didn't.

"What?" I asked anxiously as we stepped up on top the first bleacher.

"I bet I know exactly what Amber just asked them." Eyes wide, she looked at me with a frightening look.

Yes, Amber didn't like Danielle as much as I did. During basketball, I happened to be the Captain since I was level headed -seriously, not tooting my own horn, here- and a good player. Danielle was obviously jealous and pulled the stupidest pranks as well as faked injuries when Amber and I were around.

Needless to say, she made basketball horrible for us.

I followed Amber closely as she shoved through people, cussing under her breath as she did so. Typical Amber. She wasn't scared to do anything unless it got her in big trouble. Like pushing through people, she just wasn't embarrassed by, well, anything really.

I grunted when someone accidentally elbowed me in the side. It was a girl that seemed to be a freshman by how young she looked. She automatically shook her hands and said sorry at least five times. I told her it was fine and continued after Amber again. She finally stopped, a smile on her lips. She was looking at Adam before she crossed in front of them to sit beside him. Cameron stopped acting like a nervous wreck when his eyes met mine. A goofy smile on his lips made me chuckle and sit beside him. I was still clutching the pick detention slip and it reminded me that i was going to kill Cameron.

"So, did you get detention?" I asked him. He shook his head and smiled while pulling out his phone. He checked the message that i had sent him a while ago in French class.

"According to this, you must have." He showed me the screen of his phone. I couldn't help but notice that my name was Soph in his phone. That's what it said across the top of the screen, anyway. I scoffed at his reply, "Are you telling me that you don't have it?" I was shocked! How could not get it but I did? Is Monsieur Parks that evil? Is he the only teacher that would give a student detention for coming in late?

Cameron let out a light chuckle, "Nah. I got it. For an hour after school." He told me, leaning back against the bleachers behind him. I thought about how funny it was that just a little bit ago he didn't want his friends seeing me with him yet here I am. I also caught a glimpse of the rest of his friends sitting at the bottom of the bleachers gawking at the girls about to come out of the locker room in their basketball uniforms. No, they didn't really reveal any cleavage, but they'd find something to stare at I'm sure.

"Me too." I told Cameron absent mindedly. I glanced over at Amber who was giggling every second as Adam flirted with her. It doesn't even seem like he was flirting on purpose, it just came to him when he was around Amber.

"I thought you said you didn't have any friends," Cameron cautiously asked me. I could tell he wasn't trying to strike a nerve so I answered nicely.

"We actually made up today. It surprised me, to be honest. I didn't see it coming. I mean there was a little conversation between us every once in a while but today she actually apologized to me. That's big." I crossed my arms and leaned back like Cameron was. I stared off at whatever caught my eye in front of me and waited for Cameron to reply. He just nodded and we waited for the pep rally to begin.

My mind drifted to Danielle when she came running out of the locker room, leading the team. She was also the oldest on the team, being a senior this year. Her and I had one class together which was one that she failed; Mrs. Foster's. Yet somehow, her rich daddy must have bribed the coach to allow her on the team.

Coach Fawley, the boys' coach stood on the sidelines and watched everything happen before him.

I turned to Cameron who was watching the gym floor and all that was happening, "I saw Danielle talking to you," I forced a smirk to not look to jealous, "Was she bugging you?"

Wait. Did I just say I was jealous? No! Of course not! I simply wanted to know if he was bugged by her presence.

Cameron groaned, "She's annoying. It'll be great when she graduates and we never have to see her again." He grinned up at me. I couldn't help but smile back, that crooked grin getting to me.

Oh lord, what is this boy doing to me?
