Chapter 1: Caroline's Point of View
Setting: "Darling Bookstore"
Time: 13h00 Thursday
It was one of London's very very very rare sunny days; a day that you feel you could just spend the whole day outside just lounging and reading. So that was what I intended to do, well if my mother didn't catch me at it.
She has already caught me reading while on my shift inside about a bazillion times this week, so I doubt she'll be even close to happy when she sees I've completely gone and left the store.
You see, my mum owns a bookstore called "Darling Books". Everyday after school I go home, which is the bookstore, finish my schoolwork then walk downstairs, into the bookstore, to start my shift. I love books, so it isn't necessarily a bad thing, and my mum needs the help.
Still, it's hard being in a bookstore and not being able to read the books. Also, I don't see it as a problem because there aren't any customers! I'm not kidding, there are none at all. Nobody wants to buy books at a store anymore; they want to read from kindles and nooks. But she sees my reading as a problem because I have (Non-existent) customers to attend to.
Oh well, c'est la vie as Countess Luann would say!
Anyway, I still intended to go outside even after that whole rant because, as surprising as it is, there were no customers today and it was beautiful outside.
What should I read? I looked on the shelves trying to find something, but each book I already read and a lot of them I read more than once. Maybe "Jane Eyre"? No, I've read that one the most.
I decided to go look in the backroom of the store where my mum hides the newly shipped books so I don't find them. I'm always doggy-earring the pages of books, but it's not my fault if I can't find a bookmark! So, don't tell her about this…
When I was walking to the back of the store, I was very surprised when the bell to our little bookstore rang.
I looked up to see Kate, my best friend, running in screaming, "JOSH ALERT! JOSH ALERT! HIDE ME!" I grabbed her hand and opened the door to the back room and she hurried in. I knew what to do because unfortunately, this isn't the first time this happened. A second after I closed the door Josh, the possessive, evil, and insane ex-boyfriend of Kate punched the door down with his metal fist! Well, he didn't break the door down and he doesn't have a metal fist, but he did open it in an aggressive manner.
"Where's….Kate?" He asked between abnormally large gasps for air. He had what looked like a tracking device in his hand and sweat was pouring down his face, which was contorted with RAGE!
"W-what?" I stuttered watching him point the tracker in all directions like a spasmodic ninja, "What are you tracking?" I was more than afraid and I felt absolutely terrible for poor Kate.
"I'm tracking Kate! KATE! Where is she? Don't tell her, but I planted a chip in her brain." He bellowed.
I heard the beeping getting louder and I knew I had to find a way to get this creep out of the store, it would give people more than enough reason to not come in (Note to self: Get that chip out of Kate's head)!
What would Katniss do from The Hunger Games, I thought, maybe she'd have a better idea of how to handle the situation. Well, She'd probably shoot him with an arrow. Ummm…that's probably not the best option. What about Jane from Jane Eyre? She'd be clever.
"Josh?" I said walking towards him, "Do you want a towel? You're sweating a lot, in fact, I'm not exactly sure if that's natural, I don't think—"
"Where's KATE?" He screamed sending sonic booms into the store ripping pages from the books and flinging his arms out punching down the walls. Okay, yet again an exaggeration, but he did scream in a very disturbing manner!
"Well, she's—" Before I could think of a response I tripped over my own foot, very graceful, right? Well, I was nervous!
I crashed into Josh and the device went flying into the air and crashed on the floor, breaking into many pieces before Josh's eye's.
"Oh, Josh!" I said kneeling down to gather the pieces, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to do this." It was hard to keep myself from smiling. Even though it didn't go as I expected it to, it had a good result!
All I could hear was his breathing; it was very uncomfortable. "AHHHHH!" He began screaming and he ran out the door like a madman (well, as a madman, for he is one not "like" one).
"He's gone Kate!" I yelled picking up the pieces of the tracking device and throwing them into the trashcan, "You can come out!"
The door to the backroom opened slowly and Kate walked out looking relieved, but still upset, "Caroline, when is this torment going to end?" Kate sat down behind the desk and patted down her turquoise bow headband in her auburn hair.
I looked at her wishing I could say something to ease her of her worries and disturbances, but this has been going on for a month now and it's only gotten worse. "You know you could call the police like I've been telling you to. I don't want something bad to happen, Kate." She pulled her powder compact out dramatically and dabbed some powder on her nose. Poor Kate. But, I suppose this is what happens when you choose someone based on looks and not substance.
"You know I would, but it's kind of—"
"Please don't tell me you're going to say exciting."
"You know me so well!" Kate said putting her powder away and taking out her phone.
"You can't be serious, Kate! This is dangerous; you could get hurt. I don't want anything to happen to you. I know everyone wants some excitement in their lives, but, it's just-" I sighed; I didn't know what to tell her.
"I know, but it's so dramatic! It's like I'm on a television show and I'm the beautiful victim of a crazed lover! Oh, Caroline, doesn't it sound exciting to you too?"
I thought about it for a minute, but it seemed that it was more reasonable to read about adventures than live them.
"This is crazy, Kate. I'm calling the police now. If anything happened to you, I—"
"No!" She screamed putting her hand on the phone, "Don't you dare. Don't you care about how I feel?" And then she began to pout. The famous Kate Woodrow pout that makes you feel really sad.
"Kate, I'm your best friend! But this doesn't make sense. Didn't you hear what he said he did?"
"What did he do?" She asked and I could tell she didn't know; she didn't hear him say he planted a CHIP in her BRAIN! Maybe some things are better left unsaid, I wouldn't want her to get more upset.
"Um, nothing!" I squeaked! I couldn't help it because I was just so nervous and overwhelmed!
"Tell me! Please!"
"Uh, he said how beautiful you looked and that he would never stop until he won you over!" I lied, but it was best. Well, I'm sure I didn't lie; Kate always looked pretty and unfortunately, he would probably never stop.
"Very true, but he should know he is NOT going to win me over." She put her cell phone away and stood up, buttoning her trench coat and flipping her hair behind her shoulders.
"Thanks Caroline, for all your help. I'll see you later."
"Where are you going? I'll be lonely, Angel isn't allowed out of my room anymore because her fur was flying into all of the books (By the way, Angel is my little bunny! She's so sweet and she's white and fluffy)."
"Work."
My jaw literally fell on the ground. Suffice to say, I thought I'd never see Kate Woodrow work a day in her life, well, other than become a famous actress, but that's different. But I didn't tell her this because that might have hurt her feelings.
"What is your new job?"
"Well, my mum insisted that I need to start paying for my own ensembles and such, so I had to get a job, and that job is to rent out movies!" I couldn't help it, I giggled a little. It's just; Kate was too glamorous to rent out movies.
"Hey! All actresses start off small!" Kate laughed too and pulled me into a hug, "Thanks again, Caroline, you're the best friend evah!" I smiled and wished her good luck as she ran out the door to her job.
I went back to looking at books and closed my eyes; the one I pick will be the one I will read. I grabbed one and opened my eyes, "The Three Musketeers".
"Caroline." I heard and looked back to my mum staring at me. "Put that book away."
I nodded and put it back, tip toeing back behind the desk. How could she have just come out now after all that noise? C'est la vie…
