Theron’s POV
Life went on as normal after that day. Altair and I were able to sleep better at night, and now Peter had a girlfriend. They both seemed happy enough. They had both decided to leave our home and find their own place together. Guess they didn’t enjoy bedtimes as much as we do…
Altair and I had been walking through the village near our home together, it had been welcoming to the refugees that had escaped from Altair’s home village. We saw a few children playing in the street near what seemed to be an orphanage. Guess not even the children were spared from the inferno. I looked to Altair and squeezed his hand gently. “We should pay a visit to that place, love.” I said to him, gesturing to the orphanage.
Altair looked over at the orphanage and nodded in consideration. “Yea, we should. Wanna go now, love?”
Theron nodded. “Yea, I mean...we could always adopt one...It’d be nice having a little one running around.”
Altair grinned and nodded. “Yea, it would be fun...Alright then it’s settled. Let’s go.” Altair locked his arm with mine and led us over to the orphanage.
I walked inside with him. There wasn’t a lot of kids to be seen there. Guess that’s a good thing… I scanned the area and looked around. “Who do you think would be a good addition to our family love?”
Altair looked around thoughtfully at the children. He wasn’t the type to favor one over the other but he knew exactly the person to lay his trust with. “Hmm…”
I looked over to see a boy and a girl playing alone in a corner of the room, twins. They both looked like they had been caught in the blaze as well, the girl having a few scars from the burns along her arms. The boy with a scar across his cheek. “How about them?” I asked.
Altair looked over at them, and after nearly a minute of silence, he smiled bright and nodded. “They’re perfect.”
I smiled back at him and walked over with him to the twins. I kneeled down to their eye level. “Hello.” I said smiling softly.
The girl didn’t look up yet the boy looked over to me. “H...hi mister.” he said shyly.
Altair knelt by me and looked at the girl. “Hey, why so quiet, angel?”
I glanced to them to see the girl look over. She looked wary of our presence. “Shy.” she said faintly.
“That’s my sissy. She doesn’t talk a lot when people are around.” the boy said sadly. “How come you’re both here misters?”
“Well…” Altair answered. “We’re looking for two kiddies to take home.” He said softly, probably towards the girl to try and make her feel safe.
The boy smiled faintly. “The nice lady here said we weren’t supposed to persuade the mama and papas...but...you both papas… Can we come home with you…?” he said hugging the girl a bit gently. The girl still watching Altair warily.
Altair chuckled. “Well consider us persuaded boyo...I think they’re perfect.” He said to me.
I smiled at him. “I agree. All we need now are your names kiddos.” I said looking to them.
“I’m Mason. And this is my sister-”
“Madison.” the girl had interrupted. She looked to Altair and held her arms out to him. “You gonna keep us safe…?”
He smiled brightly and picked her up gently. “Of course we will”
I smiled and picked up Mason. “Then it’s settled. You’re a part of our family now.”
Altair smiled and looked over at me. “Let’s go sign the papers and go, love.”
I smiled softly and nodded. “I agree.” I’ve never seen him so happy, he has a way with kids…
Altair and I got up and walked over to where we sign the paperwork and everything else. After everything was set, Altair regarded me thoughtfully. “We’ll have a lot of buying to do soon.” He grinned.
I smiled playfully. “Let’s just get these two settled in.” I said, looking to a sleeping Madison on his shoulder.
He smiled and held her protectively. His other hand took mine and led us back to the house.
As we walked into the house, I missed the presence of Peter yelling at us about where we had been. It was so empty without him. But then, what else can you do when your friend has got his life in harmony with another. I walked with Altair to the guest room and laid Madison and Mason down in the bed tucking them in. They’re so adorable…I’m glad Madison opened up a little…
Altair looked them over, lovingly. He hugged my waist and leaned his head to my shoulder. “I love you, Theron...with all my heart.”
