My alarm rang in my ears. I lazily slapped the snooze button and fell out of bed. I got up off the floor, stretched and yawned, then jumped into the shower. The warm water felt good on my bare skin. Once I was done, I threw on some blue jeans, black t-shirt, and my favourite black hoodie. After I put on my socks, I realized how quiet my house was... The fridge wasn't on, the sinks didn't work, the tv didn't react to the remote... I ate dry cereal, which sucked without milk, and slung my backpack over my shoulder. I walked out the door and down to my bus stop. Nobody else was at my bus stop, but there were a few people at the others, a lot less than usual. When the bus came, I went to the back of the bus and sat down in the familiar yet uncomfortable assigned seat. Mieke joined me once we were at her bus stop and put her feet atop the back of the seat ahead of us. I smirked admirably at her uncaring nature.
"How is your Mom, now?" I asked her.
"It's worse," Mieke replied with a sad look in her eye.
A few moments later, our friend, Ben, came on and sat in the seat beside us.
"Hey, Ben," I said.
"Hey. My Dad is sick, so my mom didn't want me to go to school, but I insisted... You guys know how much I like school!" Ben replied.
"My mom is sick," Mieke stated.
Suddenly, the bus began getting quicker.
"Mrs. Sidern, are you okay?" Ben shouted at the bus driver.
"Ben... Ben, get down!" Mieke shouted.
I climbed up to the front of the bus and saw that the bus driver had a bullet hole in the side of her head. I looked up at the road, and when a person walked out onto the road, the bus hit it and flew into the air. It spun around and finally landed upside down on the ground. When the shattered glass underneath me broke, it left cuts on most parts of my exposed skin. With all my strength, I pushed myself up and looked around for Ben, Mieke, and Wren, who had also gotten on the bus.
"Ben! Mieke! Wren!" I called out.
I heard a groan and out came Ben, also covered in cuts.
"Where is Mieke?" I asked him.
He weakly pointed a finger into a the seat closest to me. She must've flew through the air when the bus flipped. She emerged out from under a seat and dragged out the disturbingly mangled body of Wren.
"Alive?" I asked.
"No."
"Come on. Lets get to school," I told them.
I smashed a window and we crawled out of the bus. There was not a single vehicle on the road. It was strange, considering the fact that we lived in a busy town.
"Why don't you think many people were on the bus today?" Ben wondered.
"The disease, probably," Mieke said.
"I feel bad for Wren's parents right now," I said, trying to get off the subject of the disease.
"Why?" Ben asked me.
"They don't know that he is gone! Dammit, Ben!" Mieke shouted.
It was probably the first time I've ever heard her truly shout.
"Calm down," I hissed.
We finally reached the school. There were cars, but not many. We entered the school through the front and main doors and went immediately to the office.
"Hey!" I shouted at the woman who was in the office. "A bus just crashed... The driver was shot and a boy died in the crash!"
The woman stared blankly at us and picked up the phone, probably calling the police. She muttered words into the phone and turned to us.
"Clean yourselves and go to your classes," She ordered.
We didn't really have a say, so we did so. Ben and I cleaned our cuts in the boys washroom while Mieke was in the girls bathroom.
"I can't believe it..." Ben muttered.
"Huh?" I said, confused.
"I mean, did you see her face? It didn't even look the slightest bit concerned with us or the bus, or worried!" Ben exclaimed.
I frowned, but not because I was confused... But because I was shocked.
"Come on, lets head up to class," Ben concluded, washing the last of the blood off.
We walked up to class and saw that Mieke was already back. There was only a few people: Georgia, Ethan, Greg, Mary, Mieke, Ben, and I. The teacher was not in the room. When somebody entered the room, I assumed it was the teacher. It was, but she was different... Blood dripped from between her lips, creating a trail on the floor. Most of us backed away from her, but Mary did not. The teacher lunged forwards and sunk her teeth into Mary's arm, just as she put the sharp end of her scissors into her chest.
"Mary!" Greg cried, trying to pull her arm from the teacher's mouth.
The teacher scratched Greg's chest, causing blood to stain his torn, white t-shirt. He yelled in pain and fell to the floor. Once Mary was confirmed as dead, the teacher began tearing Greg's body apart with her arms, eating all she could.
"Come on!" Mieke shouted while she was holding the door open.
Georgia, Mieke, Ben, Ethan, and I escaped that room, but there were more in the halls. All people I grew up with, some I trusted, I laughed with... No. These are not them. These are something else.
"This way!" I said, pointing at the staircase.
Those things all came at us at once. We raced down the stairs and immediately ran out of the school.
"Hurry!" I yelled.
"Help!" Ethan cried.
One of those things, someone I knew to be Holly, grabbed Ethan's arm and took a mouthful of his neck. Before I knew it, they all swarmed around him, feasting upon his corpse.
"Anyone know how to drive?" Ben asked, referring to the parking lot filled with cars.
"There's always a first," I said.
I jumped into the drivers seat as Ben, Mieke, and Georgia argued about who was sitting there.
"Mieke gets shotgun!" I said firmly.
Shotgun...
"Fine!" Ben moaned.
Georgia and Ben both sat in the back.
"Drive!" Georgia shouted.
My reaction caused my foot to go on the gas pedal. The car jolted forwards and over the borders of the parking lot. I quickly steered right, towards my house. Georgia was the only one of the four of us that didn't live in the same town.
"What about my parents?" Georgia asked.
"We'll go to your house after," I said.
"Can we go to my house first?" Mieke asked. "I wanna see my cats."
I shot a glare in her direction and nodded in agreement.
"You can't be serious! We are going to her house just for cats?" Ben spat.
"Hey! I have parents too!" Mieke said defensively.
"Ben, stop arguing right now!" Georgia restored peace. "If Logan wants the cats in the group, it will be so."
"That is, of course, if they are still alive," Ben laughed to himself.
"Hey, Ben, guess what?" I said.
"What?"
"Shut up."
It was an awkward silence until Georgia spoke again.
"So... What do we do with those things?" Georgia asked.
I actually hadn't thought of that...
"Stab them. If anything, a good stab at the heart will kill them," Ben said.
"What about the brain? When Mary stabbed out teacher, she didn't look hurt," Mieke stated.
"Wait, no! We aren't killing them!" Georgia argued.
"You saw those things... We don't kill the living, but the infected? That's a different story," Ben concluded the conversation.
