Captain (F/n) (l/n) stormed down the halls of the Palace. I was given the bad news by the doctor only an hour ago. I have cancer. I had pleaded with the doctor to keep the details of the diagnosis secret and to "fudge" my life expectancy a little. Dr Huston was a friend of mine so he agreed. I had 5-10 years as it wasn't an aggressive form of cancer but I had convinced the doctor to to say that I could be dead within a year. He has seen me come in with bruises, broken bones, burns, on the edge of starvation, and all types of other injuries in my time at the palace. He has even had to resuscitate me a couple of times when the King got a bit too carried away. So, thank god, he was willing to help me.
Really the news was not good but this was the opportunity I had been waiting for for years and I was determined to take advantage of it, to return to the love of my life and apologies for breaking his heart all those years ago. Even if he didn't want to speak to me again I needed to tell him my side of the story. I owed him that much.
I had been friends with Erwin through our training and he confessed his feelings to me on the day of our graduation. In truth I had loved him from the first day I had met him but I never said a thing to him. I didn't want to distract him from our training. But when he confesses he loved me I was the happiest person within the walls. Until later that night I was noticed by the King who happened to be conferring this years graduates. He blackmailed me into joining the military police and becoming "his property" but that is all about to change.
I stop out the front of the King's chamber and took a deep breath. This was going to have to be the performance of a lifetime.
I knocked on the door and waited for my reply.
"Enter (f/n)" I heard the King command, he was expecting me. The doctor must have just informed him of my diagnosis. I opened the door and closed it behind me. When I looked over at the King he seemed distracted trying to focus on some parchment he had in his hands. He always does this when he is nervous or upset.
I took a deep breath and walked over to him.
"My King..." my voice trailed off and I didn't make eye contact. I looked at the ground hoping my plan would work.
"I know, I know (f/n), Dr. Huston just informed me" the King said still distracted by his parchment. Looking at his hands trying not to look at me.
"I am sorry my King, it looks like I won't be yours for much longer, but..." I looked up at him to see if I had his attention. I caught his black eyes with my (e/c) eyes. " I don't want to embarrass you or cause you any pain so I have an idea, if you highness approves that is." I'll make it sound like it's his idea.
The King shifted in his seat and sat up. It looked like he was interested in what I had to say.
"Go on." He was interested bingo first hurdle overcome.
"Well it looks like the reason I have been so unwell lately is due to my cancer" part truth but part lie. I knew something was wrong but I played it up to get some much needed time off. "So I was thinking instead of staying here and you having to watch me die a slow and ugly death..." the King was all about beautiful things. "...I thought you could send me to the Scout Regiment. That way I would die a quick and glorious death that you could tell all your beautiful girls that you lost one of your brave girls to the Titans and they would be in awe your strength and courage to continue on under such circumstances." I gave him a sympathetic look and his expression softened as he thought it through. "You wouldn't have to watch me go downhill and it would look better for you than having someone in the court die of an illness. That wouldn't do your reputation any good and I wouldn't want I hurt you." I bowed my head and looked an the ground as I let a tear escape down my cheek. I was so nervous and emotional but determined to make this plan work.
I heard him get up and walk over to me. I didn't move. He placed his hand on my cheek and tilted my head up to meet his gaze.
"Oh (F/n), you are always looking out for me aren't you?" He looked... sad... wow I didn't think he had it in him. "You are right, that would look much better for me" he let go of my face, closed his eyes and rubes his brow with his right hand. "Ok, ok, I'll send you to the scout regiment, that would be the best option... " he took a deep breath. I couldn't breathe, he just agreed to my plan. I couldn't believe it! "I'll have you transferred first thing in the morning. Well that means tonight will be our last night together." A wicked smirk crossed his lips but I didn't care. Tomorrow I would be free. That's all that matters.
I managed to slip out of his room at 6am and made my way to the infirmary. He had been rather rough but I don't think he broke any bones this time. Just a few cuts and briuses. Dr Huston patched me up and I returned to my quarters and managed to get a few hours sleep before the knock at my door.
*knock knock knock*
"Coming" I groaned and threw on my dressing gown and opened my door.
"Your carriage will be here in an hour to transfer you to your new regiment." The man at my door said, he saluted and then left. A huge smile crossed my face. This was finally happening. I packed my bags with the necessities and my favourite (f/c) dress. I wrote a couple of letters for my friends and gave them to my attendant to hand out. I doubt I would get to say goodbye in person so this was the next best thing.
Dressed in my uniform, bags in hand I took a deep breath and closed the door. Almost there, please, please just a little bit longer and I can see him again. I walked down to the courtyard where the carriage was waiting. My bags were placed on the back and I was about to get on when I heard my name.
"(F/n)!" It was the King. My heart sank, please no I am almost there. I start to panic a little.
"Your highness" I put on a fake smile as I turned around. He was surrounded by his new girls he had just acquired. "See girls this is the brave (F/n)! She just insisted that she wanted to use her last breath to fight for humanity!" I heard the girls gasp and fawn all over him. YES my plan is working like a treat.
"Yes my King and you were the one to make my dreams come true" I played up to the girls bowing my head. He walked over to me and kissed me on the lips. A gasp came from the girls behind him.
"Be brave (F/n) and fight for humanity!" The King said so the girls could hear. He handed me my transfer orders sealed with wax. I took the papers, saluted him, nodded my head and turned and entered the carriage. Everyone waved goodbye as the carriage drove away from the castle. We passed the main gates of the castle and I broke down. My tears fell freely as the castle faded into the distance. I was free, I had done it, the performance of a lifetime. I cried until I fell asleep.
I was awoken as the carriage came to an abrupt halt. I was disorientated for a second but reality soon set in. I was finally here! I grabbed my papers and exited the carriage. Looking around I saw young cadets training, smiling faces and one very grumpy looking one. I chuckled thinking he was probably their senior officer. I took my bags from the driver and made my way to the main office. I wasn't exactly sure where it was so I stopped a young cadet to ask him.
"Excuse me which way to Commander Erwin Smith's Office?" I asked the young boy who had the most amazing turquoise eyes.
"Oh it's in this building here" he points to the building we were in front of "would you like me to show you? I think that might be easier than trying to explain it" he smiled.
"Thank you that would be wonderful. Oh I am Captain (F/n) (L/n), and you are?"
"I..I'm Cadet Jeager, Eren Jeager."he saluted me I think I threw him off when I said I was a Captain and I had to laugh he was a sweetie.
"It's ok Eren, at ease." I smiled at him and he seamed to relax a bit.
"Can I help you with those?"he pointed to my bags.
"Sure, thanks." I handed him one of my bags and he stood there a little confused as what to do next.
"The Commanders office?" I prompted.
"Oh yes this way Captain" as he scooted off inside. I followed him as he lead me to a closed wooden door. "He you go Captain"
"Thanks Eren." He placed my bag down outside the door.
"No Problems Captain, is there anything else I can help you with?"
"No, that's all thank you Eren" he smiled at me and left me standing at the door.
I looked it the solid wooded door. I was scared to knock, what was he going to say after all these years? I know it's not going to be all lovey dovey. I am sure he thinks I left him because he told me he loved me. I was shaking as I brought my hand up to the door.
