"Liam Payne?"
I looked up from the magazine I was peering down at, meeting the soft brown eyes of the doctor standing at the top of the waiting room.
"Do you want us to come in and hold your hand Lili?" Niall cooed teasingly, moving a piece of hair off my face in a motherly way for extra emphasis. I rolled my eyes and smacked his hand away with an amused smile, "shut up."
"Snappy" Louis chuckled.
I put the magazine on the top of the pile and got to my feet.
"Right this way Mr Payne" the doctor gestured to the hall.
"Right then, see you lads on the other side" I waved and headed off after the doctor. Harry yelled after me, something about it being okay if I needed to cry, so I quickly flipped the lot of them off as I disappeared around the corner.
I followed the small middle-aged doctor into what had to have been her office and said thank you when she offered me a seat. It was super soft, right up until the gravelly arms of the thing.
"So, I'm Doctor Kallie. What can I do you for today?" She asked, tapping her fingers on her desk. I got the feeling that she was in a bit of a rush. Couldn't blame her, she was the only doctor in this place today and there was quite a few people in the waiting room.
"Uh, I've see a doctor back home already about this, it's just a few moles on my hand. He said if they got any bigger that I would need to them frozen, so, here I am" I scratched the back of my neck awkwardly. I'd never quite gotten over the fact that I was an adult now and when I went to see a doctor Mum wasn't there to answer all the questions for me. I still felt like a little kid.
"Ah, I see..." Doctor Kallie typed a few words into her computer, "yeah, your records are here. Right, I'll go get the liquid nitrogen and we'll get right into it. I'll be back in a few" she hit a single key and stood up, her heels clacking loudly as she hurried out of the room.
I tapped my foot impatiently. Apart from a small wart I'd had done with a kid I didn't really have any experience with this whole freezing thing. According to Mum I'd screamed so loudly she was surprised my lungs didn't just come out my throat and gripped her hand so hard she thought I'd broken it. I figured I was a man now, I could deal with a bit of pain. I wasn't scared or nervous or anything.
Doctor Kallie came back, instantly placing the canister down on the seat next to mine and crouching down in front of me. She had a toothpick with some sort of cotton wad stuck to the end.
"I'm going to hold this in place on each spot for a little over ten seconds. It's going to hurt a fair amount, but I'm sure you'll be able to tolerate it just fine" Doctor Kallie nodded as she pressed the cotton inside the canister. She pulled it out and took my hand in hers, wasting no time at all in pressing it down against my skin.
The first few seconds were okay, then it started stinging and the last few seconds made me want to pull my hand away. It was kind of like touching an oven tray right out of the oven. Doctor Kallie was right though, I could handle it.
She asked me few questions as she did the next, and then took my other hand to freeze off the last.
"There you go, not too bad I hope?" She dropped my hand and chucked the toothpick into the bin, peeling off the pair of gloves she'd been wearing.
My hands were throbbing, but I just shook my head and smiled, glad to just have it over with. Everyone had been bugging me about getting it done for ages, so it was like a weight off my shoulders.
"That's good. I guess we're all finished in here then. Go out to the front to pay and then you're good to go" she waved awkwardly.
"Thanks" I smiled one last time and slipped out the door.
By the time I got back to reception the boys were up at the desk, talking animatedly to the old man behind the counter. Harry was the first to see me, "whoa, that was quick. Did it hurt?"
"Nah, it wasn't so bad" I shrugged, "just gotta pay now."
"Well, this is our new friend Bert" Niall pointed cheerfully to the old man sat on the spinny chair. He was completely bald apart form some white fluff on the sides and his ears and nose were at least three times to big for his face. He grinned at me happily, "nice to meet ya."
"Yeah, you too man" I smiled with a gulp. For some reason I was beginning to sweat. My back felt sticky and I was sure my forehead probably was too. I couldn't really move either of my hands, but I could feel the slickness of my palms.
"So how much then Bert?" Louis asked, leaning over the counter to peer at the computer screen and Bert ever so slowly clicked a few buttons.
I narrowed my eyes and blinked a few times to try clear the strange blackness creeping into the sides of the room. My legs felt heavy and I stumbled back a few steps in the direction I knew the closest chair was in. Luckily enough because I practically fell into it, the blackness completely covering my vision and my legs giving away from underneath me.
The feeling left as soon as it came and everybody was too busy talking to Bert to notice my sudden topple. I felt like nothing had even happened. I looked around with a frown, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.
"See ya lads!" Bert called as Louis, Niall and Harry started towards the door. I stood up wearily and followed them out. I wasn't sure whether or not I should tell them about what had just happened.
"Wanna stop for some food on the way back to the house? Or do you just wanna get back home Li?" Harry questioned perkily as we made our way back to the car.
"I don't mind" I replied, watching my feet to make sure they were still working.
"Subway?" Niall suggested.
"Mmmm, yeah, sounds amazing" Louis licked his lips hungrily in that way that had always crept me out. He looked like he was about to turn full cannibal and eat the lot of us.
"Everybody in then!"
"Dibs driving!"
"It's my car you idiot!"
"It's whoever's sitting in the driver's seats car" Louis grinned at Harry cheekily, holding a hand out for the keys. I plopped down into the passengers seat with a sigh. I was still sweating, and putting my seat belt on with little to no feeling in my hands was a bit of a struggle.
Harry must've given Louis the keys in the end, because next thing I know everybody's in the car and we're rolling out of our park. My heart's racing and I have no idea why. Suddenly my vision faded into this weird staticky yellow colour as if I was wearing yellow tinted sunglasses and watching a TV with no signal. I can still make out everything, the road, the trees, the shops, it's just not right.
This was getting seriously weird.
My stomach flipped and a lump rose in my throat. I moaned without meaning to and Louis glanced over quickly. "Your hands hurting? They're all red Li" he winced.
"Uh, yeah, but I- uh- I think s-something's wrong" I stuttered, feeling sicker and sicker to my stomach the longer I sat there.
"What do you mean Li? What's going on?" Niall questioned, leaning through the gap between the seats to stare at me worriedly. My vision fuzzed more.
"My s-sight, it's all weird, and I f-feel-uh-sick" I could feel my breathing speeding up, whether it was in panic or just part of this weird thing that was happening to my body I didn't know.
"Serious?" Louis glanced over again. We were in a busy part of the town, there were way too many cars for him to take his eyes off the road for too long at a time.
"He's gone stark white Lou" Harry reached forward to pat my shoulder soothingly. His voice was thick with worry.
I swallowed harshly again. I hadn't thrown up in such a long time, I had practically forgotten what nausea felt like and let me tell you, it was fucking horrible. I really didn't want to be sick in Harry's car, knowing him, he'd probably make me wash the entire thing by hand.
Then all of a sudden I couldn't see a thing. Everything was just static. I barely heard the shocked squeak I made, and choked voice saying that I couldn't see.
"What the fuck is going on? Lou, pull the fuck over, now!" Harry yelled. I blinked profusely, desperately trying to get some kind of colour or shape back. Nothing.
"It's okay Li, hang tight for just a sec."
Someone's hand on my leg.
The car jerked to a stop and I reached out blindly, grabbing onto the door handle and tearing the door open. Louis must've undone my seat belt, because it snaps back up into it's socket as I fall out of the car. My vision flickered now, and even though it's not good still I couldn't help the intense relief that flooded over me. I had had irrational fears for a few seconds there that I was just going to be blind for my entire life.
The other car door opened on my side and a pair of hands grabbed onto my waist as the grass rushed up at my face. I staggered over to the footpath and fell heavily onto the concrete on my bum. I rested my elbows on my legs and held my head in my hands, squeezing my eyes shut.
"Liam, talk to us please!" Harry said worriedly.
"Just- just give me a m-minute" I muttered. It was clearing, my vision. I just had to wait a little. I was going to be okay. Not blind.
I enjoyed the silence for a very brief minute.
"Okay, that's a minute. Now talk" Louis crouched down in front of me and pressed a hand to my forehead. "Hmmm, no fever. You're pretty clammy though..."
I weakly pushed him out of the space in front of me and then threw up, vomit burning my throat.
"Whoa, whoa, calm mate, shhh, just slow down a little" Niall rubbed my back as I gasped, vision flickering all over again. I didn't like this at all. On top of it all, my hands were still throbbing like a mother fucker.
"We should take you back to the doctors" Harry suggested.
I groaned and shook my head. After throwing up I felt a little better. I was cold and exhausted, I just wanted my bed at this point. I was done with being confused, trying to figure this all out. All I had done was get a few moles frozen. Was it possible to be allergic to Liquid nitrogen? Doubtful.
Who the fuck knew what was wrong with me.
All I knew was that it wasn't any fun at all.
"Let's get you home then. Can you stand?" Louis asked.
I forced myself onto my feet, cringing at how weak I felt. My stomach was completely fine now, at least. And I could see again, which was reassuring.
"Come on then, let's go" Niall slung my arm over his shoulder and we all walked back to the car.
I fell asleep almost right away.
I woke up in my bed who knows how long later. I had a very brief memory of walking to my room but I must've crashed again straight away. I was tucked under my duvet and blanket, completely burritoed and I felt like I was roasting. I'd been freezing earlier, I remembered that much, but it had definitely worn of now and I was so hot.
I tossed the blankets off and laid in the middle of my bed, wincing as I stretched out my hands. They were still stiff and sore. I sat up wearily, half expecting to be forced back down onto my back with intense nausea or sudden onset blindness again. Fortunately nothing happened.
It made me wonder if it was all just a dream.
I stood up, testing out my muscles. I was hardly even tired anymore.
The lads seemed confused to see me up and about. I supposed I had scared them quite a bit earlier, and it took a lot of assuring to persuade them that I really was feeling just fine now.
"Doctor Kallie did say that it would ease off after a sleep..." Louis frowned.
"Doctor Kallie?"
"We called the clinic when we got home, just to make sure everything was okay" Harry explained.
"Oh. Well, what did she say?"
"She said that it sounded like your body had gone into some kind of shock" Niall replied sympathetically, kicking his feet up onto the coffee table.
"You're joking" I huffed.
"Unfortunately not" Harry shrugged.
I couldn't all of that had happened simply because my body couldn't fucking keep up. How lame. I mean, it was nice to at least know what had happened, but in a way it kind of made me feel stupid.
"You are feeling better now though?"
"Yeah" I smiled, "perfect."
"So we're okay to tease you about it now, or is it too soon?" Niall smirked.
Ugh, I was never going to live this down.
Hahahahah... So, funny story, this is a personal experience right here, ah...
Such a fun time I had that day.
Anyway, the ib1sunshine wanted a liam sickfic, and that was all there was to the request and this was all I could think of so I'm really sorry if it's total crap. If anything, I hope you appreciate the uniqueness... :/
I'm gonna warn you right now, I literally have like eight Harry requests pending right now, and although I wouldn't usually do that many in a row like that, hell, I don't even do two in a row usually, I'm just going to let go of trying to make it even for each lad for now and probably just have a little Harry spam for the next several updates after this. If you have any more to add, feel free and if you're keen for a spam for each of the boys leave a comment about it.
Then we can figure out an order and I can start collecting requests :)
Okey dokey, that's all from me, have a good day Love!
