Alain Ducasse

“Mother, why on earth are we here?” Dakota whispered across the expensive wooden table in anger. “You told me you wanted to show me your new painting!”

Her mother merely smiled; her daughter arguing in a posh restaurant not being new for her. “Dear, hush now. People are staring.”

Dakota scoffed shaking her head, “I’m leaving. This is absurd.”

Her mother suddenly frowned, not taking Dakota’s lack of manners. She pulled her wrist down, slamming it back on the table preventing, Dakota from leaving her.

Dakota showed her mother a disgusted face at her actions, her mouth open. Her mother had beaten her to the words.

“Dakota, you will stay. There is someone important you should meet, and he came especially to see you!”

Dakota’s eyebrows crunched together, “who is he?”

Before her mother could answer her questions, her answer came walking into the luxurious restaurant. Lead by the petit host, was the one and only; Dakota’s ex-boyfriend. His chocolate brown coloured hair, was firmly pushed back in a neat manner. His features had become more prominent over the years that, Dakota saw him last. Black tight jeans wrapped around his long legs, a black dress shirt with small white circles symmetrically put, was on his chest and a black jacket covering his shoulders. The dress shirt he was wearing showed a small peak of a few tattoos; the same tattoos he had when he was with Dakota two and a half years ago.

Yet beneath the expensive leather brown boots, and his golden Rolex, his smile was what stood out to Dakota the most. He had the killer dimples, Dakota melted for everyday moment she was with him. He was everything a girl ever wanted, and that was something what Dakota didn’t want; something that everyone wanted.

“Harry!” Rosalind chirped, standing up to greet her guest she had invited. His rather large hands, held Dakota’s mother’s waist as she kissed him on the cheek.

“Mrs. Hooversen, how are you doing? It seems as if you are getting younger and younger every time I see you,” Harry grinned showing his white sets of teeth – so white that Dakota presumed he used whitener. Dakota almost threw up in her mouth at Harry’s cheeky comment.

Mrs. Hooversen giggled, flattered by such a compliment from him (she didn’t get them so often anymore, presumably it was caused by her age), as she playfully tapped Harry’s upper arm ushering from him to sit down, across from Dakota.

“Dakota,” he nodded sticking out his hand across the table. Their break up wasn’t the best, which ensured for them to have an uncomfortable tension.

               Dakota weakly smiled, “Harry.”

She ignored his hand, and he brought it back down to his side when he did the aftermath that she would not be shaking it.

The waiter strolled into the scene, and listened to Rosalind Hooversen long order for the three of them. She knew exactly what they wanted. She ordered a glass of Pernod Ricard Perrier Jouet (which she pronounced in French, of course) for herself, a glass of Dom Perignon for Dakota (a drink that, Dakota used to like but not so much anymore) and Mortlach scotch for, Harry.

After the waiter left, Dakota took in her surroundings as her mother and Harry chatted on. She was seated in a classy restaurant with calm piano music playing. The carpet was red, and the comfortable seats where white. Big lights and chandeliers hung above them, nothing out of the ordinary for the Hooversen family as well as Harry.

Three of those chandeliers could make someone’s living. The dark rosy lipstick mother is wearing, could pay for a whole week of food for someone. The drink I was about to drink could make someone’s day.

As Dakota looked down she noticed her drink was placed in front of her. She hadn't even noticed. She hadn’t noticed that her mother excused herself from the table either, seeing her mother tread in her heels towards the restroom.

As she glanced back to Harry, seeing him look back at her as he drank a sip of his stout drink.

               “Why are you here?”

He scrunched his eyebrows together, “what do you mean?”

She rolled her eyes, and moved closer. “I don’t need you back in my life, Harry.”

That stung Harry slightly, as much as he didn’t want to admit it. “We’ve all made mistakes, Dakota.”

“You left me,” she sneered back at him tears whelming up in her eyes. “You call that a mistake? You didn’t care, Harry! You chose your job over me, and left me alone. You literally moved away to New York, and you didn’t even invite me along. You left me in that stupid mansion in London – all damn alone.”

She didn’t understand why she would even bother to explain her pain. She wasn’t as broken as she was before, she healed herself but in her belief it was Louis who healed her.

He sighed, moving his eyes down. “I understand, Dakota,” he said slowly before looking up at her. “You’re upset. But I’m back in London now, and for good too. I won’t be leaving to New York anymore – I came back for you, Dakota.”

“Bullshit,” she cursed at him, “tell me the real reason why you’re here.”

He exhaled before grabbing her hands. “Because I want you back in my life, Dakota. I miss everything about you.”

They both stared into each other’s eyes again. Harry looked at her in a passionate way – a way that every girl her age wanted to be looked at – and Dakota looked at him in a hesitant way. She would never leave Louis; he completed her, but it is always hard to turn down your real first proper love.

“I can't,” she whispered back, “I’m happy now. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been and that is because you aren’t in my life.”

It was a lie really. Dakota felt pain, stress and maybe she felt a bit depressed too but she wasn’t going to admit it and certainty not that it may have been caused by someone close to her. Someone who made her the happiest.

“Is there someone else in your life now, Dakota?”

“Yes, yes there is, and I don’t need you to barge in and possibly ruin things.”

nodded slowly. He was Dakota’s best friend, not anymore, but he was. He could read her like a book, know her next step and everything. He was always so happy around her, and this time around it was time for him to move on. He never felt so guilty at what he had done to her; leaving her.

His eyes catched on something in her palm; a disgusting and ugly wound right in the centre of her palm.

               “What is that?”

               “What?”

               “That?”

“It’s nothing,” she pulled her hands back from the warmth his were giving her. “I need to go before my mother comes back. It was nice seeing you again.”
