“Where’s my camera charger?” I yell as I race around the house.

“How should I know, its your charger not mine.” My Mum replies from the lounge room with the six o’clock news playing in the background.

I frantically look around my room while moving miscellaneous items from the floor and shelves on the desperate hunt for the charger.  Because if I don’t find it I wont be able to take any photos on the trip of a lifetime that my friend Rachel and I are going on.  It takes me a few panicked minutes before I see a thin black cable slightly peeking out from behind my bookshelf.

“I found it, thank god!” I yell out to my mum.

“That’s great sweetheart.” Mum responds to me, as I slowly pull the cable out from its hiding spot.

As I am getting the last of my things to put into my suitcase and zipping it up there is a loud knock on the front door of our apartment, a wave of excitement washes over me, as I know exactly whom it is and why they are here.  Before I have the chance to get up and move towards the front door I see a petite girl with long brown hair and a massive smile plastered on her face, running through my bedroom door chanting “Its today! Its today! Chummy, I can’t believe that this day has finally come!”

“I know!” I reply with so much excitement that I feel I might explode.

Today is the day that my friend Rachel and I have been planning for the last year, the day that we travel to London, England for the holiday adventure of our dreams.

My Mum enters my room a while after we have calmed down and are sitting on my bed in the corner of my room chatting about all of the great places we will be able to see including the sets of the Harry Potter films and quaint English cottages and the country side.

“You both ready for me to take you to the airport?” Mum asks with a slight glint in her eyes, almost as though she is about to start crying within any second.

“Yes” Rachel and I say in unison as we jump off the bed, almost hitting our heads on each other’s, then we quickly pull out the handles on our suitcases and drag them out the front door.  As Rachel puts her bags into Mums car I take the last chance I will have too turn back and look at my childhood home that I wont be seeing for the next three months.  Slowly turning back to the car I notice that Rachel’s bags are packed into the boot and that Mum is hopping into the driver’s seat of the car.  I quickly stuff my bags in next to Rachel’s and walk around to the passenger side of the car with a massive grin on my face and a slight bounce to my step and then swing myself into the car and onto the seat.

___________

After almost an hour driving along the seemingly endless highway and multiple games of eye spy.  I finally see a green street sign signaling that the Airport is the next left turn.  Turning back to Rachel we both squeal with excitement and she has a huge grin from ear to ear, I know that my facial expression is the exact same as hers.  I catch Mums eye as I turn back around and notice that she has a slight shine to her eyes.  I blink back tears and blow my nose on a tissue as I try to not let my emotions get the better of me.

By the time we have arrived at the airport and have parked the car I have managed to compose myself, but I know that I won’t be able to hold back my tears when I see my mum for the last time before getting on the plane. Mum goes to get Rachel and I a trolley to put our suitcases on them and wheel them more easily into the check-in line for our flight.  Both Rachel and I hop out of the car talking wildly about all of the great adventures and places we will see and do.

“Imagine if we ran into the Queen walking her corgis while we were walking down the street or Victoria Beckham while we were shopping!  How great would that be?”  Rachel says excitedly while pulling her suitcase out of the boot of the car.

“Although that would be great… I highly doubt that that would happen as what are the chances of meeting them in a massive city like London!”  I reply skeptically while removing my own suitcase from the boot of the car.

“Don’t be such a party pooper Abigail it’s called positive thinking, we will meet so many famous people you watch, the city is practically crawling with them!”  Rachel replies with out any doubt as though what she is saying is pure fact.

“Or wishful thinking…” I mumble.

Mum then arrives back with a metal trolley for our suitcases to go on and we begin the small walk into the international airport, full of excitement and slight nerves but mostly happiness that this day has finally come!

____________

I knew this time would be coming eventually but I didn’t think it would be this hard.

As when my Mum embraces me in her arms for the last time until I return back from my holiday I see that she has a tear going down the side of her cheek, I have to quickly look away to avoid crying myself.

“Please don’t cry Mum I will be ok.  Plus I’m with Rachel and you know we will protect each other if anything will happen, which it won’t.”

“I know you two will be ok” Mum replies “I just can’t believe that my baby will be leaving me all alone back here.  Are you sure I can’t just come with you two?”

“No that would be just too embarrassing Mum!”  I jokingly reply trying to make the moment slightly happier.

“I love you Abigail, don’t you ever forget that.” Mum says letting go of me slightly to look at me in the eyes.  Her blue eyes have a glisten to them from the tears she cried not too long ago.

“I love you too, Mum.”  I reply with a slight crack in my voice as I try to hold back my own tears.

“Alright come on we need to line up now other wise we will miss our flight!”  Rachel says as she walks over to give my Mum a quick hug to say goodbye and thanks her for driving us here.

I give Mum one final hug and she kisses me on the top of my forehead and then Rachel and I turn around and head towards the queue that will take us onto what we have dreamt about doing for as long as we can remember.
