I didn't feel uncomfortable not wearing a scarf, I never wore it when I used to live with my muslim family. Disappointed was how I felt. I had made a deal with myself that I would wear the headscarf when I start high school. And now here I am, getting ready for my first day of freshman year and the head scarf was forbidden with my foster parents. But, I understand why they don't agree with me wearing it. I curled my hair and wore a pink blouse with pink floral print leggings. Yes, pink is my favorite color.
I grabbed my backpack and rushed down to the kitchen. There I found Rebecca waiting for me with breakfast.
"You look beautiful", she said.
"Thank you", I replied. "First impressions are very important", I added as I grabbed a water bottle out of the fridge.
I sat down next to her as she looked at me with her beautiful hazel eyes. "Good luck, don't let anyone get under your skin... And remember, don't change for others, change for yourself."
I looked at her with confusion. She began laughing. "Sorry, that was what my mother had told me on my first day of freshman year. I've always wanted to say that to my daughter, and now here I am... Telling you, my daughter", she explained.
I grabbed her in for a hug. "Thanks mom" I said smiling. "Your welcome", she said back. "Now let's get in the car, we don't want to be late for your first day of school."
