"Okay Katie, just sign here...and here...and here." Dr. Price said, handing Sevin's mother a stack of papers.
Brody's release papers that is.
Sevin and her mom got up early to go pick up Brody, and Sevin was anxious that there would be something that might keep Brody from going home. Well, home to her.
While Katie did paperwork with Dr. Price, or Leonard as his name was learned to be, Sevin sat with Brody on the firm bed.
"I don't think I can thank you enough for what you've done for me." He said while clenching her hand.
"It's really my mom.” she said back, resting her head on his shoulder.
"So are your mom and Leo like dating or something?" He asked.
"No, they're just 'talking.' Whatever that means. I mean, whenever I come here he's also nice to her. Nicer to her than me actually." She shrugged.
"He's a great doctor." Brody sarcastically laughed.
"I hear you kids!" Leonard chuckled from across the room.
"Also, um," Katie looked to the teenagers on the bed and lowered her voice. "Sevin needs some Quetiapine, Leo."
"Brody knows, Ma." Sevin said, already annoyed with her mother so early in the day.
"How many pills do you have left?" Leo turned to Sevin.
"Like 2 doses." Sevin dropped her head so neither adult could look her in the face.
"Seriously? Two days left and you only say something last night? I brought it up anyway, where you even going to tell me?" Katie said, getting up from her seat.
"I didn't realize it was that low until last night when I took my dose." Sevin defended, still looking down.
"You know, it's really fine. I'll write out a new prescription right now." Leo said, while taking a script pad out of his pocket.
He started scribbling on it and Brody grabbed hold of one of Sevin's wrists.
"Stay calm, alright?" He whispered into her ear and she lifted her head back up.
Leo handed Katie a slip off his pad, "Here's for two refills so you won't have to head or Dr. Grace's anytime soon."
"Are you trying to get rid of me?" Sevin asked, getting off the bed.
"I would never do anything like that to my favorite patient."
"Especially when you're tying to get in your patients' mom's pants."
"Sevin Lee Baroch!" Katie shouted and snatched the paper out of Leo's hands.
Brody held back laughter and clutched his stomach, the emptiness rattling his body.
"Mhm, so is he good to bring home?" Katie asked, gesturing to Brody.
"Yep, his tests say that he should be fine. Just make sure he eats light for a couple of days, and he has to drink a lot of fluids. Start with ginger ale and seltzer and sprite, easy- going soft drinks. Water of course, as well." Dr. Price said, as Sevin helped lift Brody off the bed.
"I have all that at home already Sev had a big party last night." Katie said.
"Oh she did? Was he there at the party?" Dr. Price asked directing the question at Sevin.
"Well that's how we brought him here last night." She replied, shaking a loose hair out of her face.
"I'll be seeing you all soon." The doctor chuckled as he walked out the room.
"He's creepy, Mom." Sevin said, walking down the hall with Brody and her mother.
"Stop being rude, it's just because he isn't a seventeen year old punk rocker." Katie said back, hitting the elevatorbutton.
"Is your mum trying to say that I'm your type?" Brody whispered into Sevin's ear as they stepped into the elevator shaft.
"You're a punk rocker?" Sevin asked, slightly interested in finding this out.
After all, punk rockers were actually her type.
"It looks like we need to have a conversation about music when we get to your house."
"Yeah, we do." She grinned.
The car ride to the house was very interesting. The trio made small talk throughout the drive, but nothing of enough interest to be documented. For we all know, this pair is headed on a long road to hell.
"Well you've seen the house before." Katie said upon opening the door.
"It's cleaner than I anticipated it would be after a party like the one last night." Brody said and stepped in, taking his shoes off.
"Maybe Tanner and Blake stayed and cleaned." Sevin said and followed Brody and her mother's actions.
"More so Tanner and Justin." Katie joked, although it was truthful.
Blake never was one for cleaning up messes, especially when they weren't her own.
"I met them last night, right?" Brody asked, and stood in the hall awkwardly.
"For like a split second." Sevin answered and gestured for Brody to join her on the couch.
He sat down, but kept distance from Sevin, not wanting to arise any suspicion from her mom, who behaved so kindly towards him.
"So," Katie sat down on the couch next to the other couch where the teens resided "I don't mean to bring up sensitive topics so soon, but it needs to be addressed. Brody, sweetheart, I would suggest going to your house to pick up some of your stuff but under the conditions you aren't permitted near there until further notice. I'll let you know as soon as I know. I should probably take your phonenumber though."
"Right, yeah." Brody reached into his pocket to pull his phone out, but felt nothing but hollowness. After a search of each and every pocket, he spoke up.
"I think I-"
"Oh did you leave it at the hospital?" Katie cut him off.
"I actually think I may have left it in the bathroom upstairs last night."
"Well there goes your excuse to call Leo." Sevin smirked. "Not now, Sev." Katie sighed.
"I'll check for the phone," Her daughter replied and hopped up, heading up the stairs and shortly returning from the upper floor.
"Here you go!" She said and tossed the phone into Brody's lap.
After Katie and Brody swapped numbers, as well as Brody and Sevin, Katie resumed the speech she was giving.
"There's some clothes left in the spare bedroom from Sevin's cousin. I'm not sure if they'll fit but you can try. I'll pick some up if you need me to. Also, as part of the deal I made to get you to stay here, you have to go to school with Sevin. It's a good school, and you probably know a couple people from there already. You can start on Monday, but the doctors said that you can rest until Tuesday."
"I think I'm fine to go on Monday." Brody said, and scooted closer to where Sevin was lounging.
"Now, I hate to do this, but I have to run a few errands. I'll be gone for anywhere between 2 through 5 hours, but hopefully you guys are okay right now."
"We're fine, mom." Sevin rolled her eyes.
"Oh! Before you step out, I'd just like to thank you for all this, Ms. Baroch. I'm sorry, I don't know your maiden name." Brody said as Katie neared the door.
"It's Baroch. Sevin took my name when her father made it clear he wasn't coming back." Katie explained.
"Well that worked well."
"But, please call me Katie. I think we're already past last names."
"Of course."
"Okay, I'll see you in a little while kids!" And with that they were alone again.
"So what was your original last name?"
"Don't laugh," She took a sideward glance at the boy "It was Tiên."
"Tiên? You're name was Sevin Tiên? Sounds like seventeen." He had to suppress a chuckle as to not anger Sevin.
"I told you not to laugh!" "I didn't, I didn't!"
As the duo busted into a chorus of unison laughter, Sevin smiled at the way Brody's accented sounded against the rough sound of chuckles congesting his throat. She thought of it as a sweet honey lining the edges of a fractured gem, much like Brody's personality itself.
"Baroch is better, anyway." She stood up and headed up the stairs. "Are you going to come?" She stated it rather than asking.
"Mhm, yeah." He stood and followed her up the stairs into her room.
"Your room is the one right next door, it's quite small but I guess it will work." She said when they were both seated on the bed.
"Everything is perfect, Sevin. I can' thank you enough. I've only known you for 24 hours or however long it’s been but I can't even start to-"
"It's fine." She cut him off by laying her palm over the top of his hand.
"You saved my life."
"Don't sweat it Brody."
He yearned to further comment, but in his mere 24 hours with the girl, he learned that she liked to get her way and was angered when she didn't, so he let her be.
"If you'll excuse me, I should probably call my friends andapologize for last night."
"I'll go check out my room then?" He looked to her for approval.
She nodded her head and reached for the phone, rapidly hitting the buttons as if her life depended on it.
But then again, she was a teenager.
She settled on calling Blake, since they were the closest of all the friends.
"Hey, you still with hot guy?" Blake answered upon the fourth ring of the phone.
"Um, yeah. What happened last night? My house is kinda clean." Sevin replied, playing with the sleeves of her flannel.
"Tanner cleaned, I think. Justin started puking all over the place so he stayed a little later at your house. We all ended up sleeping over Bri's place."
"Are you still there?"
"Justin's still passed out, and Bri is a little foggy but yeah."
"You might want to put it on speaker then."
"Okay," Sevin waited for an alert that the phone was on speaker mode "Okay yeah."
"So that guy from last night,"
"The cute one?" Bri's voice cut off Sevin.
"Yeah, his name is Brody. Well we took him to the hospital and some stuff happened and long story short, he's living with me for a while."
"I'm sorry what?" Tanner's voice cut through the speaker "You can't let random guys move in with you, Sev."
"He's not a random guy. A lot happened last night, and anyway it was government issued so I can't do anything about it." Sevin tried to defend her new friend.
"Government issued? What did you get into?" Tanner spoke again.
"Why are you focusing on that? She's so going to bag him!" Blake said.
"No, no I'm not." Sevin defended.
"I know you, you're going to hook up with him." Bri said.
"That's not the point guys. He's starting school on Monday and I really need you to be nice to him. There's a lot you don't know about him." Sevin pleaded with her semi- sober friends.
"There's a lot you don't know about him." Tanner, who was always concerned for her safety, once again butted in.
"Okay well I know enough. Can you just please do this? If not for him, for me." She was desperate at this point, because knowing her friends; they could very well make Brody's life hell.
"I don't have a problem, if you don't hook up then I'm going to." Bri said.
"Yeah what she said." Blake then stated.
"I'm going to have to talk to him to make sure he's alright to be around you." Tanner said.
"He's perfectly fine to be around me." Sevin said, almostfed up with her friends' comments.
"Alright, well bye. I think Justin is waking up." Bri shouted and hung up the phone, not giving Sevin a chance to give a farewell.
Sevin huffed and laid the phone on her duvet, then stepped up and walked to Brody's door, lightly rapping it.
"Come in," Brody responded, voice louder than it was before.
Sevin entered the room and saw Brody lounging on the bed and in the small room, which only had enough space for a bed, dresser, and TV mounted on the wall.
"How're you feeling about the room?" She asked and sat down next to him.
"I like it, it's cozy." He replied and crossed his palms over his chest.
"It's small is what it is. It used to be a closet." She replied.
"It's big for a closet."
"But small for a bedroom."
"Don't worry, it's much better than my room home. Well, in Garboro."
"There isn't anything in here though. Besides some clothes that might not even fit."
"Here," Brody stood up and took a couple steps to dresser, pulling out a blue T-shirt. He then stripped his own shirt off of his body, leaving his chest bare for few moments (which Sevin tried to act like she didn't enjoy, although we all know she did) and then put the blue shirt on.
"It fits." He stated, and then laid back down next to Sevin.
"I can see. Do you read?" She asked, lying down with her palms under her chin.
"I think everyone in high school knows how to read."
"I mean for fun, you idiot." She said and playfully scruffled his hair.
"Yes, if you must know I do enjoy fine literature." He shook his head out.
"I might have some books you want to read. You can justcome into my room if you want to check them out."
"I'll probably do that soon."
"I have to say, I'm enjoying your presence here."
"My presence?" He lowly chuckled.
"Well yes I'm usually home alone a lot. Now I have a friend here with me."
"Oh, about that."
"About what?"
"About being friends. What exactly is the boundary for friends in your book?" He slowly inched closer to her.
"What are you trying to get at?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Well typically friends don't kiss each during moments of near death. Or speaking of near death. Or generally, at all."
"Hmm..." She looked away from Brody's deepening stare. "I think you need some of that sprite Dr. Price recommended." She stood up from the bed and walked out.
"I think so too." He mumbled and followed her out, now regretting bringing up anything about their few shared kisses.
He feared that his short stay at the Baroch residence would come to an end already.
When Brody entered the kitchen, Sevin already had a bottle of sprite sitting on the counter, and she sat next to it, also on top of the granite.
"Sorry, all we have is cranberry sprite." She said as she pushed the bottle closer to him.
"It's fine, cranberries are my favorite fruit." He said and untwisted the cap, sipping from the bottle.
"Peaches are mine. Unfortunately for me though, we don't have peach sprite."
"Mhm," He took another sip, not really listening to what Sevin was saying.
"Brody are you listening to me?" She said calmly, yet sternly.
He looked at her, than at the bottle, which he had already almost devoured without realizing.
"Yeah, I am." He sheepishly smiled without looking at her.
"What did I say?"
"You were talking about your favorite fruit."
"I also said," She stretched her arms out to touch his face, which was perfectly leveled with her since she was sitting up high.
"What I had said was that," She pulled his face closer and kissed him, softly, but then gradually deepened it until she thought she should break the kiss in case of it going too far.
She did only know him for a day, after all.
"You're my only friend I kiss."
