The Celts did not call themselves "soldiers", but rather "warriors". The typical Celtic warrior was male, and there has been no found proof that females were ever a part of this. Celtic warriors were buried with either their shield or their preferred weapon, which was usually a sword. No Celtic female graves have been discovered that have contained any sort of battle armour.
Military equipment was very important to the Celts. They were armed with a shield, a long, heavy sword, and a set of one to four spears. The longest spear, called a "lancea", was 1.8 metres long, and often times had a head nearly 50 centimetres in length. "Gaesums" were the other spears. They were shorter throwing spears, and the head never exceeded 10 centimetres.
Warriors were also equipped with a leather-covered wooden shield, 1.2 metres high and 0.5 metres wide. It bore the insignia of the clan in metalwork.
Warriors had no special war attire, and wore their everyday clothes - trousers, a shirt, and a mantle. They also wore a torc, a neck band made of twisted metals.
Celtic warriors were also known to use chariots called a "carpentom". It was made entirely out of organic materials, and was drawn by two horses. The difference between these and other chariots is that rather than being fixed to the axel, the chariot platform hung freely by ropes. This made it easier to maneuver and fight from. Two people would be in them - a charioteer, who actually drove, and a warrior who stood at the back and fought.
