Chapter 17

A few weeks passed, Jake was recovering and Roan had gone to school and got all the subjects she wanted to take. She was starting to get back into the swing of things, but as she got to know the family more, the more she wanted to learn. One evening she knocked on the training room door and waited for a response.

"Come in." Liam said. She pushed down the handle and went in. His face lit up as she came towards him. "Roan! Is everything all right?" He asked. Roan nodded looking around. She hadn't been in here before and it was a very big room. It reminded her of the ones back at the HQ. In the middle on a stand was a box and Liam was leaning on the stand and staring at it. The box was wooden and covered in a random patterns of lines that were carved into it.

"I was wondering actually Liam, if you would teach me how to do the click Trick." She bit her lip.

"Sure!" He said. "Anything to get my mind off this box."

"Ok, when I do it, I move but not very far and not where I want to go. It's really annoying." She said.

"All right, I'll do my best. Tell you what, I'll get Darren to help as two heads are better then one! Hang on." He then shut his eyes and in twenty seconds Darren appeared out of the blue.

"What?" He asked. Roan stood in amazement at what just happened. Liam had used telepathy and very quickly. He was a natural!

"Roan needs help on learning the click trick and I thought you could help. Can you go up to my room and just stand there." He asked. Darren rolled his eyes, but did as he was asked. "Show me what you can do." Liam said.

She back away from him and thought about Liam's room, she then clicked her fingers and she appeared just at the door.

"See." She said. Liam laughed as she walked back over.

"You need to use your eyes too. You need to flash your eyes, without transforming and click your fingers at the exact same time. You have to relax." He said. Roan pulled a face.

"Relax?" she asked. Liam nodded. "Ok, here goes." She tried to do it and next thing she knew she was on the living room. She sighed and walked back to the training room. "Well Darren didn't say you made it up there." He said. Roan shook her head.

"The living room." She said.

"It's because you didn't quite let go enough and do it at the exact same time. You have to be precise." HE said. She nodded and focused once again. When she clicked her fingers she was stood in the bathroom. She stamped her foot in annoyance and ran downstairs and back to Liam. She shook her head again.

"Relax, take a few deep breaths and then when you are ready, do it." He said. Roan thought it as no use, but she took her time. She then looked straight at Liam and let her eyes go and her fingers snapped. She was soon looking into the face of Darren.

"Hello." She said.

"Finally." He sighed. He closed his eyes and sent down a message. Liam then sent one to Roan's head and she felt funny as she received it. His voice went off in her head.

"Well done." He said. She clicked her fingers and stood back in front of Liam again.

"Why thank you!" She bowed. Liam laughed. "Really though, thanks. I appreciate it."

"It's no problem."

"I'll let you get on." She smiled as she left Liam alone. She went out into the hall and she began to test it once again. She stood still for thirty seconds and let herself relax as she clicked her fingers and next thing she knew she was in her room, where she wanted to be. She smiled to herself and sat on the bed. She lay back and stared at the ceiling, just thinking for a minute or so. She was starting to understand what the three's job was about now and it sounded hard. Liam and Jake wanted peace and Hazel wanted chaos. Number four would settle this and if they wanted peace, peace is what they got, if the wanted chaos. All four would have to battle it out until one side got a winner. This was going to be tricky. The box was also getting on everyone's nerves, even Lewis's. He moaned at his offspring most meal times and they would all strop off leaving just Lewis, Darren and Roan at the table. Both Darren and Lewis would ignore her, so she just ended up leaving the room too.

What Roan had completely forgotten was that I was a full moon that evening and no one had explained to her what they did on full moon. So when she went down to have dinner she found out.

"Oh before I forget Moon Protector Tablets please Harold." Lewis demanded. Roan looked at Liam who slapped his forehead.

"Sorry I never did tell you did I? We have brought in these weird tablets so when you take them on full moon, it stops you changing. It's so we don't get found out. It's out protection." He explained.

"So you don't change?" she asked. Lewis began to laugh and everyone looked at him.

"I haven't transformed on full moon for eighteen years. These tablets have been around years. I only ever transform if I want to." Lewis explained.

"You mean you've never had these tablets before?" Hazel asked, fiddling with the end of her plait that fell over her shoulder. Roan shook her head.

"As you have guessed we like to seem human and just blend in. Which meant not getting involved with Breathing Spirits if we couldn't help it." She shot Liam a looked who looked away from her.

"Well you smell human enough, in fact are you sure you aren't human." Lewis snapped. Roan turned her head sharply and stared at him. She looked down at her plate, scared she might shout out something stupid. "You don't know anything do you, what powers you have, what your strengths are...I blame your parents." He smiled slyly.

"Dad stop it!" Liam warned him. "It's bad enough that we know the Hunters and other assassins are after us, without you having a go at everyone too."

"Well what difference does it make saying that. Sorry Liam, but we have been wanted by the same kind of people for a long time. As much as I hate saying this, dad has a point. Is she really capable?" Hazel asked.

"Yes of course she is capable!" Jake butted in. "I've seen her!"

Roan felt really uncomfortable and Darren could see this, so he pushed it further. "You do have to be strong with this Roan, don't forget your head is on the block too."

'Tell me about it' was what she really wanted to sat, but she wrenched her mouth shut.

"That's uncalled for." Liam snarled. Roan couldn't take it anymore so she stood up causing complete silence and stormed out of the room. She didn't make a fuss as she slammed the door. She sighed and went into the kitchen across the hall, where Harold was standing on a stool, reaching into a cupboard. She looked up at him as he brought down a little white plastic box. He smiled at her and held a little blue tablet out in front of him. She took it, got some water and swallowed it whole. She then ran upstairs and hid away in her room. She couldn't stand Lewis at all and he didn't know what was coming for him. At all.

"Well done dad." Liam spoke through gritted teeth.

"Don't forget Liam that it was your fault they were kidnapped. You weren't home in time, so I had to do something about that!" Lewis said in his defence.

"Yeah but you over reacted about that." Jake pointed out.

"No I didn't. I got those men to kidnap her parents and take them away. They are enemies to us, those Peace makers. They will get what all the others from the moon meeting get and right now, they are probably wishing they're dead." He said. Liam didn't look at his father. "Now you be careful with what you do or I will tell Roan what you have done. Do you understand?"

"Yes father." Liam sighed. He too got up and left, feeling irritated and very annoyed. "But she isn't our enemy. They could've helped us. They were willing to fight!"

"Of course, then turn their backs on you and get you killed." Lewis said. Liam had had enough and got to his feet. As he did, he knocked the table and his cup of Weakness fell over and it spilt everywhere. He growled and clicked disappearing on the spot.

"You could have dealt with that better." Jake muttered. Lewis pretended not to hear him and watched Harold walk in with the tablets.

"Make sure Liam takes one." Lewis sighed. Harold nodded and handed the blue tablets to everyone around the table. He then took away the empty plates to start with the washing up. He didn't want to get involved, there wasn't much point. As always it was to do with secrets and Harold hated secrets. Especially ones that could hurt someone later on. But this wasn't his problem.

Roan sat in her room and got on with some English revision. She wasn't really concentrating, just staring out of the window as the sun set. She had to get out of the house, she felt trapped and that pill had done nothing for her insides. There was a knock on her door and she turned her head sharply to the door.

"It's me Roan, can I come in?" It was Jake's voice.

"Yeah sure." She spoke loud and clear so he could hear her. He had obviously heard because he opened the door and came in. He shut the door quietly and moved towards Roan. "Sit down." She said patting he bed. Jake nodded and sat down next to her.

"I am so sorry about that." He said.

"Don't worry about it, I over reacted." She said.

"No he was being unfair and unjust. Liam was trying to stick up for you, but that went down the drain. He's in his room sulking. He and dad have been having weird arguments like this ever since he came back. It's like he doesn't want to be here." Jake said.

"That's probably my fault. He probably enjoyed having no pressure on him. Darren and your dad should give him a bit of slack. They should give you all some slack. You work hard, is that not enough for them?"

"No." Jake answered simply. Roan sighed and tapped her pen against her left wrist.

"Well maybe you need to find another way to open this box. Have you tried opening it all together?" She asked. He nodded.

"It does nothing. The groove marks light up for a few seconds and then die out." He answered. Roan nodded.

"Who's turn is it to go looking this weekend?" She asked.

"Mine. As you know Liam is not allowed to go yet and when dad started letting him again, he wont be going alone after what happened." He said. Roan went bright red.

"Oh dear, was it that bad?" She asked. Jake nodded.

"Well dad didn't take it very well." Jake said getting up again.

"I had better go Roan, sorry Darren wants me to do some training. I'm sorry again about earlier."

He apologised so sweetly Roan wanted to hug him.

"Honestly, it's fine." She lied. It had upset her, but she didn't want to make Jake feel guilty so she left it at that and shut the door. She went back to her bed and sat and watched the orange sun in the pink sky, set slowly. She watched the darkness spread, starting off as a light navy blue and gradually getting darker. As soon as the darkness had filled the sky, she shut the curtains. It made her feel uneasy. It made her feel that as soon as the sun rose the next morning a little bit of Stella began to stop trusting Roan. The thought scared her and she hoped she could sort something out, except for the fact number four wouldn't show themselves. She had to do something to speed things up, but what?
