[ chapter four, phantom traveler ]

THEN

Previously on Beasts and Strangers

The Winchesters' suburban home.

-

WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT

Mary runs up the stairs and into Sam's nursery.

"Daddy!" Dean exclaimed as John shoved Sam at Dean, forcing him to take the younger into his arms

"Take your brother and sister outside as fast as you can and don't look back! Now, Dean, go!" Dean ran downstairs with Sam. John looked back.

-

WHAT THEY WITNESSED

Mary burns on the ceiling.

"Mary! No!" John watched the nursery burn, Mary with it.

-

SENT THREE HUNTERS

On Sylvania Bridge, Dean, Max and Sam turn to face the onlookers.

In Sam's apartment, Dean and Max spoke to Sam and Jess.

"Dad's on a hunting trip."

Outside Constance's house, Dean fires through the Impala's window at Constance.

In Sam's bedroom, Sam pulls out his curved knife. In Sam's apartment, Dean speaks to Sam and Jess.

"And he hasn't been home in a few days."

-

ON A QUEST FOR ANSWERS

22 YEARS LATER

In the stairwell from Sam's apartment, Sam speaks to Dean and Max

"I swore I was done hunting."

-

In the Impala, Constance tries to rip Sam's heart out.

-

In the parking lot, Max spoke to Sam

"We can't do this without you"

-

Blood dripped onto Sam's forehead, one drop, then another; he flinched and opens his eyes. He gasped in horror, eyes wide. Jess was pinned to the ceiling, staring down at him and bleeding from the belly.

"No!" Sam shouted loudly. She burst into flames; the fire spreads across the ceiling.

-

Sam finishes loading a shotgun and tosses it in the Impala's trunk.

"We've got work to do."

-

In the Jericho county Sheriff's office, the Sheriff throws down John's journal.

-

From "Wendigo" (1x02)

Dean knelt in front of Max and Sam, holding Johns journey "This is Dad's single- -most valuable possession-everything he knows about every evil thing is in here. And he's passed it on to us.

I think he wants us to pick up where he left off."

-

From "Pilot" (1x01)

The three of them looked into the arsenal in the trunk of the impala, in the parking lot outside of Sam's apartment

-

Dean: (voice over from Wendigo 1x02) "You know, Saving people"

-

From "Wendigo" (1x02)

In the underground mine after they'd found Tommy and tried to make an escape

-

Dean: (voice over from Wendigo 1x02) Hunting things"

-

From "Wendigo" (1x02)

Dean looked at Max and Sam "The family business."

"No." sam told them "I gotta find Jessica's killer. It's the only thing I can think about."

-

From "Pilot" (1x01)

In the impala, Max spoke to her older brother

"What about Faith? does she get to be left alone?" Max asked

"Faith is with Bobby and she doesn't need any more trouble right now, and neither does he alright? So shut your pie hole"

-

From "Wendigo" (1x02)

In the forest, Max looked at her brothers

"Boys, you know we're gonna find Dad, right?" Max asked them, her eyes closed as she leant against her twin

"Yeah, I know." Dean said

"Me too." Sam told her

-

NOW

-

A still frame of a beautiful tropical beach scene. With the nice kind of clouds so that you can see the beautiful blue sky.

Hawaiian-style music played.

A plane could be heard taking off is heard as a very nervous Man in a suit, George Phelps, sat up, revealing the beach scene to be a picture. The man checked his ticket and enters the bathroom.

"Thank you for flying United Britannia Airlines."

Phelps decided to calm his nerves by going to the bathroom. He leant over the sink, splashing water on his face. A second Man came out of the stall area and dried his hands.

"Man Nervous flyer?" He asked

"It's that obvious, huh?"

"Man You know, what are the odds of dying in a plane crash? I mean, what? Twenty thousand to one?" The man said, walking away from him Phelps watched him go

"Wow. That's, uh, really reassuring. Thank you." Above his head, a cloud of black particles emerged from a vent, swirling around his head, and entering his eyes.

-

PLANE - DAY

"Thanks." The Pilot, Chuck, turned and addressed a Flight attendant, Amanda.

"Amanda, how are you today?"

"I'm doing just fine, Chuck." Amanda addressed a PASSENGER.

"Welcome aboard. 15C towards the back of the plane, on the right." She said

"Thank you." The passenger said. Amanda addressed Phelps, the man from the bathroom.

"Have a nice flight, sir." She said. Phelps turned and Amanda saw that his eyes were completely black, even the whites.

"Oh, I'm counting on it." He told her. Amanda blinked several times, watching Phelps, and shook her head.

"Um...uh, 11F, that's the middle of the plane, on... "

"Thank you."

" ...the left."

-

PLANE - Later

"In just a few minutes our flight crew will begin room service in the cabin..." the copilot said Phelps turned to his seatmate.

"Excuse me." He began "Do you know how long we've been up?"

"Oh, uh..." The Woman began, looking down and checking her watch. "About forty minutes." She said

"Wow. Time really does fly, huh?" He said "Excuse me. I've got to stretch my legs." Phelps goy up, squeezed past the Woman, and headed to the back of the plane. When he reached the rear exit, he grasped the release handle. A Young Man in an aisle seat, Matt Jaffey, noticed him.

"Hey, what the hell are you doing?!" He shouted. But it was too late. Phelps turned to look at Matt, eyes black again, then ripped the door open. He went flying out the window, the door flying off and tearing half a wing off the plane, and the plane began to go down. Amanda struggled to get to a seat and, after the oxygen masks deploy, to get one over her face. Matt, Chuck, and the Copilot already have them on.

SUPERNATURAL: Beasts and Strangers

MOTEL ROOM - EARLY MORNING

Once the three had found a motel room, the two sleepy heads refused to get up while Sam went out to get food. Dean asleep on his stomach and Max starfished on the bed, snoring a little. As the door opened, Dean awoke and slipped a hand under his pillow for a weapon. As he turned to look, he saw Sam entering, carrying coffee and pastries.

"Morning, sleepy heads." He told him, Max waking up now, sitting up and yawning

"What time is it?" Dean asked groaning

"Uh, it's about five forty-five."

"In the morning?" Max asked

"Yep."

"Where does the day go?" Dean asked as he sat up, Max rubbing her eyes and reaching over for a coffee

"Did you get any sleep last night?" Dean asked Sam

"Yeah, I grabbed a couple hours."

"Liar." Dean said " 'Cause I was up at three, and you were watching a George Foreman infomercial"

"Hey, what can I say?" Sam told him "It's riveting TV."

"When was the last time you got a good night's sleep?" Max asked

"I don't know, a little while, I guess." Sam told them "It's not a big deal."

"Yeah, it is." Max said

"Look, I appreciate your concern-"

"Oh, I'm not concerned about you." Dean said "It's your job to keep my ass alive, so I need you sharp.

"You know I'm sitting right here," Max said, eyebrows raised Sam shrugged. "Seriously, are you still having nightmares about Jess?" Max asked worriedly. Sam crossed the room, sitting on the other bed, and handing a coffee to Dean then to Max.

"Yeah. But it's not just her." Sam explained "It's everything. I just forgot, you know? This job. Man, it gets to you."

"You can't let it." Dean said "You can't bring it home like that."

"Shut up Dean like you've never had a nightmare." Max said, standing up and hugging Sam, her twin sister protectiveness showing a bit. Dean rolled his eyes as Max let go and sat back down

"No actually, I haven't." he said

"So, what? All this it...never keeps you up at night?" Max asked. Dean shook his head.

"Never? You're never afraid?" Sam asked

"No, not really." Max raised her eyebrows before she reached under Dean's pillow to pull out a large hunting knife and held it up as evidence. Dean took the knife back "That's not fear." He insisted "That is precaution."

"Precaution my ass." she smirked

"All right, whatever." Sam interrupted, knowing the two would fight "I'm too tired to argue." Max's phone began to ring. She picked it up and answered."

"Hello?"

"Is this Max?" A girls voice said on the other end. Max looked confused

"Who's asking?" She asked, turning on her bed slightly

"It's, uh, it's Faith," the girl said "Faith Singer?" She said

"Faith?" Dean's eyes quickly snapped up at the meniton of his ex-girlfriend's name. He tried not to panic; for all he knew Max could have met a new Faith somewhere on her limited time hunting alone. But from the look on his sister's face he knew that was just wishful thinking, "Yeah, how are you it's been... years," Sam glanced over at his older brother, half concerned half trying to contain amused laughter,

In another motel room, a red haired girl was pacing the small motel room, she was average height, possibly just below, and was wearing classic "hunters uniform" of jeans, a plain black top, flannel and a leather jacket

"Yeah..." she trailed off uncomfortably, "Look, I- I wouldn't have called if this wasn't an emergency I just... My dad seems to think I can handle this case at the airport, but I don't know, man, I think it's big to do by myself, and I don't wanna call him cause, you know, I'm trying to prove I can do this whole hunting thing by myself and... I mean it's been going well so far I just..." She sighed "Unless you two have a different case right now of course,"

Max shook her head, both brothers watching intently

"No, no, we uh.. we don't have a case right now," she replied, slowly crossing the room towards the desk in the corner to have something to lean against.

Taking a seat at the very edge of her perfectly made motel bed, Faith gave a small smile, nodding minutely

"So you remember that poltergeist case you helped me out with a couple years back?" she began, "the one time we were actually allowed to go out alone?"

Max nodded, furrowing her brows as she began to remember

"Oh, right, yeah," she tilted her head, "Up in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, the poltergeist thing," Dean and Sam glanced at one another at the unfamiliarity of that case, "It's not back, is it?"

Quickly, Faith shook her head, relief in her tone

"No!" she chuckled nervously, "No, no, thank god, no," she sighed deeply, trailing off as she ran a nervous hand through her auburn hair, "But it's something else, and... uh, I think it could be a lot worse."

Confused, Max folded her free arm across her chest, gripping the elbow of the arm holding the phone to her ear

"What is it?" Max asked.

Faith was silent for a long moment, and Max was unsure if it was her nerves or that whatever it was she had stumbled into was far worse than anything they'd seen before

"Can we um... Can we talk in person?"

"Uh, sure, just... text me where you are, ok?" Max nodded, arm dropping to brush her fingers through her roots, "Alright, couple hours tops, Fi... bye," The phone call abruptly ended and Max looked over at her brothers, puzzled, "So... that was Faith," Dean glared slightly, clearly uncomfortable yet still trying his best to hide it

"Why does my ex have your phone number?" Max narrowed her eyes at her brother; Faith wasn't just his ex-girlfriend, she and Max had gotten really close over the on-again-off-again years of the complicated relationship she had with Dean. And so, attitude getting the better of her, she folded her arms, brows raised and smirk on her face

"Oh, we're boning, did I forget to tell you?"

Unamused, Dean was quick to grab the pillow next to him on the bed and hurl it at his sister's face, knowing that she was joking yet still being pissed she'd made a joke like that in the first place.

HOURS OF DRIVING LATER, THE IMPALA came to an abrupt stop beside an all too familiar looking winter blue 1969 Mustang

Smirking, Max poked her head forwards through the gap between her brothers from the back seat.

"Nice wheels," she grinned, only earning a glare from her big brother as he hastily unfastened his seatbelt

"Shut up," he sneered, having already slammed the door in her face before the twins even had a chance to begin leaving the car behind him.

*ੈ𖤐‧₊˚

"Thanks for making the trip so quick." having made their way in, Dean, Sam and Max were walking down through the airport while talking to Jerry, the man Faith had mentioned earlier, "I ought to be doing you guys a favor, not the other way around. Max and Faith really helped me out,"

"Yeah, they told me. It was a poltergeist?"

"Poltergeist? Man, I loved that movie," A familiar girls voice came from behind Dean Sam and Max

"Hey, nobody's talking to-" Jerry began before being interrupted by Max

"Faith!" Max exclaimed, looking at her best friend and hugging her tightly

"The one and only!" Faith said, moving her brunette hair out of her face and looking at Sam who was smiling at her s

"Gee, Sammy, look at you! God, you were this big the last time we saw each other," She grinned, motioning to just below her chin

"It's good to see you too, Faith," he smiled,

Then she looked at Dean. And a slight awkwardness settled in the air. Anyone with two brain cells could sense the obvious tension between her and Dean

"Hi, Dean," she said grinning before hugging him tightly

"Hey, Red," he said hugging her back.

"I'm really happy you guys made it here so fast, I've missed you a lot." Faith said smiling. Dean smiled at her fondly and she cleared her throat, putting her hands in her pockets "a-anyways uh.. about that poltergeist."

"Damn right it was a poltergeist," Jerry said "practically tore our house apart. Tell you something," he said, looking at Faith "if it wasn't for you, Max, Dean and their dad, I probably wouldn't be alive." Jerry turned to Sam "Hey," he began "your Dad said you were off at college. Is that right?"

"Yeah, I was." He told them "I'm-taking some time off." Faith smiled at him and rubbed his arm reassuringly

"Well, he was real proud of you." She said "I could tell. He talked about you all the time."

"He did?" Sam asked him

"Yeah, you bet he did." She nodded "Oh, hey, you know I tried to get a hold of him, but I couldn't. How's he doing, anyway?"

"He's, um, wrapped up in a job right now." Max told him

"Well, we're missing the old man, but we get Sam. Even trade, huh?" Dean laughed and smiled and his brother

"No, not by a long shot." Sam told him

"I'd say it is, smartass" Faith told him, smirking at him a little

"I got something I want you guys to hear." Jerry told them

-

OFFICE - DAY

"Listened to this. And, well, it sounded like it was up your alley." Jerry put a CD in a drive. "Normally I wouldn't have access to this. It's the cockpit voice recorder for United Britannia flight 2485. It was one of ours."

"Mayday! Mayday! Repeat! 2485-immediate instruction...... may be experiencing some mechanical failure..." There was a loud whooshing sound.

"Took off from here, crashed about two hundred miles south. Now, they're saying mechanical failure. Cabin depressurized somehow. Nobody knows why. Over a hundred people on board. Only seven got out alive. Pilot was one. His name is Chuck Lambert. He's a good friend of mine. Chuck is, uh...well, he's pretty broken up about it. Like it was his fault."

"You don't think it was?" Sam asked

"No, I don't." Jerry told them

"Jerry," Max began "we're gonna need passenger manifests, um, a list of survivors"

"All right." Jerry said

"And, uh, any way we can take a look at the wreckage?" Faith asked

"The other stuff is no problem. But the wreckage...fellas, the NTSB has it locked down in an evidence warehouse. No way I've got that kind of clearance." Dean frowned.

"No problem."

-

Parking lot

"I assume you'll need a lift or something?" Dean told Faith as they headed to the Impala. Faith raised her eyebrows and smirked, taking out the keys to her mustang

"Actually" she began, walking over to her car and opening the door, sitting in the drivers seat "that won't be necessary." she winked at Dean jokingly and he smirked, rolling his eyes still

-

STREET - DAY

Sam and Max were waiting by the cars outside a Copy Jack for Dean and Faith to get fake ID's. As Dean left, an attractive woman enters.

"Hey"

"Hi." Dean said. Faith raised an eyebrow and, just to annoy Dean, she held his hand and kissed his cheek, simply so the woman would judge him. She looked him up and down in disgust as she walked away. Once they got back to Sam Dean started wiping his cheek and he pushed her arm jokingly

"Dude!" Dean gave Faith a look, she chuckled and let go of him

"Hey, you're a heartbreaker, I just saved her ass" she said with a laugh. Sam just rolled his eyes and put his hands in his pockets

"You've been in there forever." He told them. Dean held up three IDs.

"Well, you can't rush perfection." Faith told him, holding up her own

"Homeland Security?" Sam asked, taking one of the IDs as Max did the same "That's pretty illegal, even for us."

"Yeah, well, it's something new. You know? People haven't seen it a thousand times." Dean said as the four got in the car, Faith in shotgun and Sam and Max in the back.

"All right, so, what do you got?" Faith asked Sam, looking back at him

"Well, there's definitely EVP on the cockpit voice recorder." He told them

"Yeah?" Dean asked

"Listen." he said as he began to play the tape,

"No survivors!"

" 'No survivors'?" Dean asked "What's that supposed to mean? There were seven survivors."

"Got me." Max said

"So, what are you thinking? A haunted flight?" Faith asked

"There's a long history of spirits and death omens on planes and ships, like phantom travelers." Sam told them

"Mm-hmm." Dean said

"Or remember flight 401?"

"Right." Faith said "The one that crashed, the airline salvaged some of its parts, put it in other planes, then the spirit of the pilot and copilot haunted those flights."

"Right." Sam said

"Yep." Dean agreed

"Maybe we got a similar deal" Max suggested

"All right," Dean began "so, survivors, which one do you want to talk to first?"

"Third on the list" Max said "Max Jaffey." Dean rolled his eyes

"Why him?" Faith asked

"Well, for one, he's from around here." Sam told them "And two, if anyone saw anything weird, he did."

"What makes you say that?" Dean asked

"Well," Max began "we spoke to his mother."

-

HOSPITAL - DAY

The Impala was parked in front of the gate to a building with a sign out front reading

RIVERFRONT PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL.

Sam (voice over): "And he told me where to find him."

-

GARDEN AT HOSPITAL - DAY

"I don't understand." Max began "already spoke to Homeland Security."

"Well, some new information has come up, so would you mind answering a few questions?" Faith asked him her sweetest voice, that she reserved for when she really wanted something, like a free drink or answers in this case. They sat down at a square table, Faith sitting across from Max and Sam, Max and Dean sitting across from each other.

"Just before the plane went down, did you notice anything unusual?" Sam asked him.

"Like what?" Max asked.

"Strange lights, weird noises, maybe, voices." Max listed.

"No. Nothing." Max said.

"Hmm. Mr. Jaffey, you checked yourself in here, right? May I ask why?" Faith asked him.

"I was a little stressed." He began "I survived a plane crash!"

"And that's what terrified you." Faith pressed "I mean, that's what you were afraid of?"

"I don't want to talk about this anymore." Max said.

"See, I think you did see something up there. We need to know what." Faith continued.

"No. No. I was delusional. Seeing things" Max insisted.

"Oh." Said Dean, then turning to Sam, Faith and Max and said, "He was seeing things."

"It's okay." Faith said reassuringly.

"Just tell us what you thought you saw. Please" Sam said. Max hesitated for a moment before answering.

"There was this man, and he had these eyes...these black eyes...um...and I saw him... I thought I saw...he opened the emergency exit. But that's impossible right? I mean, I looked it up, there's something like two tons of pressure in on that door." Max explained.

"This man," Sam began "did he seem to appear and disappear rapidly? It would look something like a mirage."

"What?" Max asked them, looking at them strangely "Are you nuts?" Max asked. Faith gave a small nod, . Sam kicked her shin for nodding and she shot him a quick glare. "He was a passenger. He was sitting right in front of me."

"Thank you for your time." Faith said with a smile and they stood to go look for the new passenger.

-

Phelps house - outside

"So this is it. George Phelps, seat 20C." Sam said as they pulled in front of a house in town. Faith stared at the nice house with the beautiful lawn and white fence and thought it was hardly the home of something evil.

"Man, I don't care how strong you are. Even hopped up on PCP or something, no way you can open an emergency door during a flight." Dean said.

"Not if your human. But maybe this guy George wasn't human." Faith pointed out.

"Some kinda creature in human form." Sam said.

"Does that look like a creature's lair to you?" Dean said. Max smirked as Faith looked over at Sam and Dean

"Okay so... no offence but... you two can be.... intimidating..." Faith said

"What's that supposed to mean?" Dean asked

"I just... she's lost her husband... and you two are... beefy men... intimidating.... sometimes... and you can also be unsympathetic... so maybe... Max and I should take this and you wait in the car?" She told them more than asked, giving each boy a stern look. They just nodded as Max and Faith got out and headed for the ordinary looking house

-

Inside - living room

They went to talk to George's widow under the pretense of Homeland Security.

"This is your late husband?" Max asked picking up a photo on the side table.

"Yes, that was my George." Ms. Phelps confirmed.

"And you said he was a dentist?" Faith double checked.

"He was heading to a convention in Denver." Said Ms. Phelps. "Did you know he was terrified to fly? For him to go like that..." she trailed off.

"How long were you two married?" Faith asked her.

"Thirteen years." Ms. Phelps said. Faith smiled, she wondered what it would be like to be with someone for longer than two weeks. It sounded wonderful.

"In all that time, did you ever notice anything strange about George?" Max asked.

"Well, he had acid reflux if that's what you mean." Ms. Phelps said Max and Faith exchanged a look.

"Thank you for your time. We are so sorry for your loss. We'll show ourselves out." Max said

-

Outside

The two headed back to the Impala

"I mean, it goes without saying. It just doesn't make sense" Max said, getting back into the Impala, followed by Faith on the other side

"Yeah, a middle aged dentist with an ulcer doesn't exactly scream 'evil' to me." Faith said.

"Ya know what we need to do is get inside that NTSB warehouse, check out the wreckage." Max said.

"Okay, but if we are going to go that route, we better look the part." Faith pointed out.

"Yeah, mind explaining everything Faith? Seeing as you wouldn't let us go in?" Dean asked, still frustrated at her.

-

Outside - shops

After they briefed the boys, The four went to the shops, Dean and Sam going across the street and getting suits in one store, while Max and Faith looked for professional outfits in another.

-

Inside - Shops

Max went in the dressing room trying on black pants, a white, curve hugging, button-up that stopped at the elbows and a pair of oxford shoes.

Faith was in a changing room opposite her, trying on a black, above the knee pencil skirt, with a plain white shirt that came up to her elbows and a black blazer matching the skirt that hugged her figure perfectly; then finally she just stuck to her converse ankle sneakers as she could not be fucked to get uncomfortable heels. The two came out of the dressing rooms and looked at each other

"Good enough?" Max asked, Faith just smiling at her

"It looks awesome." Faith said. Max smiled and nodded, then glancing at Faith

"You too... skirt's a nice touch." she added.

After making their purchases, with the fake credit card Max had the two ducked into the bathroom to put everything on. Once they had the clothes on, Max tied up her hair, Faith's was already tied up.

-

Outside - Suit rental shop - Day

-

[SONG: Black Sabbath - Paranoid]

Max and Faith went to meet the brothers who, dressed in full suits and ties, were waiting by the car.

"You two look so girly" Dean commented

"Well, Dean... We ARE girls" Faith told Dean. She folded her arms and looked the two up and down. Max snickered slightly

"Nice monkey suits." she said. Sam rolled his eyes and Dean sighed

"Man, I look like one of the Blues Brothers." he said

"No, No" Faith told him "you don't. You look more like a...seventh-grader at his first dance." She smirked and laughed again, Max high fiving her as Dean looked down at himself.

"I hate this thing."

"Hey." Sam said "You want into that warehouse or not?"

The four got into the Impala Dean started the engine, Sam already sitting shotgun and Max and Faith already in the back

-

Storage warehouse

They got to the warehouse and simply had to hold up their fake badges and were immediately let in.

-

Evidence room

The room they went into was giant with tones of pieces of the plane scattered around.

"What is that?" Sam asked refereeing to the objects Dean and Faith had just pulled out.

"EMF meter." Dean said. "It reads elector magnetic frequencies." Dean explained.

"Yeah, I know what an EMF meter is, but why do those look like busted up Walkman?" Sam asked.

"Cause that's what I made it out of. It's homemade." Dean said with a big smile on his face.

"In case you can't tell," Max began "Dean is extremely proud of his invention." She smirked and Faith rolled her eyes before pulling out her own proper EMF meter that she got from her father as and the four split up and took separate sides of the room scanning for any EMF. Sam followed Faith, which Max was glad of since she had already begun to ship the two of them.

"Check out the emergency door handle." Faith said, calling the others over. There was a strange black substance on the door.

"What is that?' Max asked as Dean scrapped some off with his fingers.

"One way to find out." Sam said and he pulled a test tube and knife out of his jacket pocket to get a sample. As soon as they had the sample, they heard footsteps coming down the hallway and they went out the back door of the building.

-

Storage warehouse - hallway

Two agents in black suits approached the security desks, pulling out their badges to show to the guard

"Homeland security?" The guard asked "what, one team of you guys isn't enough?"

"What are you talking about" one of the agents asked as the other looked at the first agent

-

Evidence room

The agents and several other security guards burst into the room, armed and holding their weapons in search for the intruders. Only to find the four were gone.

-

Outside

Max, Dean, Faith and Sam were walking calmly and quietly to the car trying to appear as though they belonged when a loud alarm began to blare and they took off running. Dean threw his jacket on top of the barbed wire fence so they could climb over without cutting their hands and Max kicked her heels off and held on to them so she could run, Faith already overtaking the others. Sam and Dean climbed over first, and expected the girls to need help

"Hey! You want me to-" Sam began, but Faith had already grabbed the fence, launching herself over and landing perfectly, almost elegantly. Max on the other hand landed not so elegantly with a thump

"Looks like these monkey suits do come in handy. What do you have to say now, jackass?" Dean teased his sister as he grabbed the jacket off the fence, who glared at him as they continued to the car and safely made their getaway.

-

Airport

Chuck was sitting nervously in his chair as his copilot gave him a reassuring pep talk

"Listen chuck" he began "it's like getting back on a horse. Only in this case, a little twin engine. Not even a horse, more like a pony. I'll be right there with you too. Anytime you feel like you don't want the wheel, I'll take over" he smiled "look, Chuck, we don't have to do this today. I'm not rushing you"

"No" chuck told him "the.... the waiting is worse..."

The copilot looked over is shoulder "okay they're filling up the tank. Then we go"

The copilot stops, walking away and leaving the nervous pilot alone. Pilot sipped his coffee nervously as suddenly, a black cloud of smoke emerged from a vent, rushing into chucks eyes

-

Jerry's office

The were with Jerry in a lab at his office building, looking over the samples Sam had collected.

"This stuff is covered in sulfur." Jerry informed them.

"Are you sure?" Max asked.

"See for yourselves." Jerry said and he gestured to the microscope they were using. They heard banging coming from outside the room, along with a mans voice

"You fuckin' piece of crap!"

"If you will excuse me, I have an idiot to fire." Jerry said and left the room. "Hey. Einstein. Yeah, you. What the heck you doing? Put the wrench down-" His voice trailed off. Dean stood and walked over to the sample and looked at it.

"Ya know, there's not too many things that leave behind a sulfuric residue." Dean said.

"Demonic possession." Faith said.

"That would explain how a mortal man would have the strength to open the emergency hatch." Max pointed out.

"If the guy was possessed, it's possible." Sam said

"Yeah, but this goes way beyond floating above the bed and vomiting pea soup." Dean began "It's one thing to possess a person, but to use them to take down an entire airplane?"

"Have you guys ever heard of something like this before?" Sam asked. Max and Dean shook their heads, Faith thinking for a moment before doing the same

"Never."

AIRPORT TARMAC - DAY

The Copilot was waiting by a small plane; Chuck, looking cheerful and relaxed, approached

"I'm ready. Let's do this."

The copilot, confused, laughed and follows Chuck to the plane.

-

PLANE IN FLIGHT - DAY

"How you feeling?" The copilot asked

"I feel great." Chuck replied

"You'll be back flying jumbos before you know it."

"I hope so." Chuck toldnuk "How long we been up?"

"Uh...almost forty minutes." The copilot replied

"Wow." Chuck said "Time really does fly." Chuck suddenly dove the plane towards the ground.

"What are you doing?!" The copilot yelled fearfully

Chuck elbowed the copilot in the face as eyes turned black.

-

ROAD - DAY

A tractor was trundling by as the plane suddenly appears, crashing into a telephone pole and then the ground.

-

MOTEL ROOM - DAY

Dean, Faith and Sam are we're full research mode, with images and articles taped to the walls and strewn across the beds, Sam and Faith sitting at the table on laptops while Dean was sitting on the beds going through books and Max was in the toilet.

"So," Sam began "every religion in the world has the concept of demons and demonic possession, right?"

"Yeah," Faith answered "but last time I checked none of them had anything that wanted to bring planes down."

"Well, that's not exactly true. According to Japanese beliefs, certain demons are behind certain disasters both natural and manmade. One causes earthquakes, another causes disease..." Sam listed.

"And this one causes plane crashes?" Faith asked

"So what we have a demon that's evolved with the times and found a way to hike up the body count?" Dean asked.

"Yeah." Sam answered "And who knows how many planes it's brought down before this one." Dean scoffed and scratched the back of his head walking away from then others who were still gathered around the laptop.

"What?" Faith asked asked.

"I don't know. This isn't our normal gig." Dean said " I mean, demons don't want anything, just death and destruction for its own sake. This is big. And I wish Dad were here." Dean confessed his concerns.

"Yeah. Me too." Sam said as Dean's phone started ringing, he took it out and answered it

"Hello?"

"Dean, it's Jerry."

"Oh, hey, Jerry."

"My pilot friend...Chuck Lambert is dead."

"Wha-Jerry, I'm sorry. What happened?"

"He and his buddy went up in a small twin about an hour ago. The plane went down"

"Where'd this happen?"

"About sixty miles west of here, near Nazareth."

"I'll try to ignore the irony in that."

"I'm sorry?"

"Nothing. Jerry, hang in there, all right? We'll catch up with you soon." He hung up and sighed

"Another crash?" Sam asked.

"Yeah. We gotta go." Dean said grabbing his bag.

"Where to?" Faith asked.

"Nazareth." Dean said, walking over to the bathroom door and banging on it

"Well, if that's not irony, I don't know what is." Faith said before standing from the table

"Max! Come on we gotta go," Dean said, banging the door. Suddenly Max emerged from the toilet, looking like utter crap.

"I think... I got food poisoning..." she said "tho I'm good n-" her face paled as she launched herself at the toilet again

"Uh-oh," Faith said "Max?" She asked "you wanna stay here for now?" Max just groaned in response as the others left the motel

-

On the road

The Impala drove past a road sign that read: NAZARETH 3

-

Nazareth 3

Black smoke could be seen in the distance

-

Jerry's office

Once again the Winchesters found themselves looking over samples from the crash with Jerry.

"Sulfur?" Faith asked and Jerry nodded. "That's great." she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "So that's two crashes involving Chuck Lambert. This demon sounds like it was after him."

"With all due respect to Chuck, if that's the case, that would be the good news." Sam said.

"So what's the bad news?" Dean questioned.

"Chuck's flight went down exactly 40 minutes into it's flight and get this, so did flight 2485. 40 minutes." Sam repeated.

"40 minuets?" Jerry asked. "What does that mean?"

"It's biblical numerology." Faith explained. "You know, like Noah's Arch. It rained for 40 days. The number means death."

"I went back and looked and there have been six plane crashed over the last decade that all went down 40 minutes in." Sam said.

"Any survivors?" Dean asked.

"None." Sam said "not until now at least. Not until flight 2485."

"Hey" Faith began "the cockpit voice recorder. Remember what the EVP said?"

" 'No survivors'." Dean answered, Sam nodding in response. Faith looked at the others in realisation

"It's going after all the survivors." She said "It's trying to finish the job."

-

On the road

The Impala - night

Faith and Sam had split up the list of survivors and were calling them from the Impala while Dean drove. Faith hung up the phone.

"Okay that takes care of Blaine Sanderson." She said "He has no plans to fly anytime soon."

"Yeah neither is Dennis Holloway" Sam said as he crossed the names off of the list.

"So our only wildcard is the flight attendant, Amanda Walker." Dean said.

"Right. Her sister Karen says her flight leaves Indianapolis at 8 pm. It's her first night back on the job."

"Just our luck." Faith said. "Dean. That's a five hour drive, man. Even with you behind the wheel." She said said

"Faye, why don't you call her again." Dean said.

"I already left her three messages. She must have turned her phone off." She told him "I've got to call Max" she said "I'll tell her to drive my car up tomorrow"

"We aren't going to make it." Sam told Dean

"Oh, we'll make it!" Dean said and he hit the gas pedal as Faith pulled out her phone to brief Max on what was happening.

-

Airport

Sam, Faith and Dean ran into the airport and over to the screens showing flight times searching for Amanda's plane.

"There!" Faith exclaimed "They're boarding in 30 minutes."

"Okay. We've still got some cards to play, but we need a phone." Dean said.

Dean picked up the courtesy phone and called Gate 13, flight 242 looking for Amanda

"Airport Services."

"Hi." Dean began "Gate thirteen."

"Who are you calling, sir?"

"I'm trying to contact an Amanda Walker. She's a flight attendant on flight, um...flight 4-2-4."

-

AIRPORT, GATE 13 - NIGHT

"Amanda Walker, Amanda Walker, you have a phone call. White courtesy phone, gate thirteen."

Amanda approached the gate, hearing the announcement. She picked up

"This is Amanda Walker."

"Miss Walker. Hi, this is Dr. James Hetfield from St. Francis Memorial Hospital. We have a Karen Walker here. "

"Karen?"

"Nothing serious, just a minor car accident, but she was injured, so-"

"Wa-wait, that's impossible. I just got off the phone with her."

-

Airport - Dean

Dean paused

"You what?" He asked

"Five minutes ago. She's at her house, cramming for a final. Who is this?"

"Uh, well...there must be some mistake."

"And how would you even know I was here?" She asked "Is this one of Vince's friends?"

"Guilty as charged."

"Wow." Amanda said "This is unbelievable."

"He's.... really sorry."

"Well you tell him to mind his own business and stay out of my life, okay?"

"Yes, but...he really needs to see you tonight, so-"

"No, I'm sorry." Amanda said "It's too late."

"Don't be like that. Come on. " dean pushed "The guy's a mess. Really. It's pathetic.."

-

Gate 13

"Really?" Amanda asked, intrigued

"Oh, yeah."

"Look, I've got to go. Um...tell him to call me when I land." She said;

"No, no. Wait, Amanda. Amanda!" Amanda hung up and headed for the plane, greeting coworkers. As the same black cloud came out of a vent, then went back in.

-

Check in area

By the look on Dean's face when he hung up, They guessed it didn't work.

"Damn it!" Dean exclaimed "So close!"

"Alright. Time for plan B. We're getting on that plane." Sam said.

"Woah, woah, woah. Just wait a second." Dean said.

"Dean," Sam whispered harshly "that plane is leaving with over a hundred passengers on board and if we're right, it's going to crash!"

"Look, I'll go get the tickets and you guys go get whatever can go through security from the trunk and met back here in five minutes." Faith said, she was about to retort when she noticed the look on Dean's face. "Are you okay?" She asked him.

"No! Not really!" Dean said.

"What? What's wrong?" She asked in a concerned yet annoyed voice.

"I umm... well I kinda have this problem with... flying." Dean said.

"Really?" Sam asked

"It's never really been an issue till now!" Dean exclaimed.

"You're joking right?" Faith asked

"Does it look like I'm joking!?"

"You look more like you're gonna throw up" Faith told him

"Why do you think I drive everywhere Faith?" Dean snapped.

"Okay. We can just can go and do this one on our own." Sam said gesturing to Faith who nodded.

"What!? Are you two nuts? You said it yourself the plane's going to crash!" Dean asked.

"Look, Dean." Sam said "We can all do this together or Faith and I can do it by ourselves. I'm not seeing a third option here."

"Come on!" Dean complained "Really?" Dean said, sighing as he came to the conclusion he would have to get on the plane. "Man."

-

Plane

The three were sitting on the plane with Dean in the aisle, Sam at the window, and Faith squished between the two giants. Dean was fidgeting in his seat and anxiously flipping through the safety guide.

"Just try to relax." Faith told him

"Just try to shut up." Dean snapped back at her, causing Sam to laugh.

The plane began to take off and Sam and Faith tried to hide their giggles at Dean's terrified expression. The airplane rose into the air, levelling itself as the wheels began to retract. Dean looked around nervously, Faith smirking amused.

-

Later

Dean sat in his seat, tapping and humming

"Dude. Are you humming Metallic?" Faith asked Dean.

"It calms me down." Dean said

"Look man, I get that you're nervous, but you've got to keep it together. I mean, we've got 32 minutes and counting to find this thing and perform a full on exorcism." Sam said.

"On a crowded plane, that's going to be easy." Dean said sarcastically.

"You're not helping" Faith said "Just take it one step at a time. Now...who is it possessing?"

"Well, it's got to be someone with some kind of weakness, like a chink in the armor that the demon can get in though. Someone with an addiction or emotional distress."

"Well, this is Amada's first flight after the crash. If I was her I'd be pretty messed up." Sam commented. Just then a pretty, young, blonde flight attendant walked by and Dean stopped her.

"Excuse me miss, are you Amanda?" he asked

"No, I'm not." The stewardess replied politely

"Oh. Sorry. My mistake." Dean said. He turned around in his seat and saw another young blonde girl dressed in a flight attendant uniform. "That must be Amada back there." Sam and Faith turned around in their seats to look at the girl. "I'll go talk to her, and I'll get a read on her mental state."

"What if she's already possessed?" Sam asked.

"There's ways to test that. I brought Holy Water." Dean said reaching into his bag for the water.

"How did you get that past security?" Faith asked asked.

"Okay, let me rephrase. I brought exactly three ounces of Holy Water." Dean sassed her. Sam grabbed the Holy Water out of Dean's hands and shoved it into his jacket and said,

"No. I think we can go more subtle." he said "If she's possessed, she'll flitch at the name of God." Dean nodded, unbuckled, and started walking towards the back of the plane when Faith called him back.

"Hey!"

"What?" he asked.

"Make sure you say it in Latin." She reminded him

"Yeah. I know." he started to walk away again

"Hey!" Faith called Dean back

"What!?" Dean snapped

"In Latin, it's Cristo." Faith said

"Dude! I know! I'm not an idiot!" Dean said and walked away for the third and final time to talk to Amanda

"Really? Since when?" Faith said under her breath. Sam started laughing.

-

Dean made his way to the back of the plane, thumping a seat once after the plane shakes.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your first officer speaking..." the copilot began

Amanda was fussing with the drink cart and napkins.

"Hi." Dean said

"Hi." Amanda replied "Can I help you with something?"

"Oh, no. I'm just a bit of an uneasy flier. It makes me feel better to walk around a little bit." He said

"Oh, it happens to the best of us." Amanda replied

"Of course, you being a stewardess, I guess flying comes easy to you." Amanda laughed

"You'd be surprised." She said

"Really? You're a nervous flier?" Dean asked

"Yeah, maybe, little bit." She replied

"How is it that, being a stewardess, you're scared to fly?" Sean asked

"Kind of a long story" Amanda said

"Right. I'm sorry for asking."

"It's okay." She told him with a smile

"You ever consider other employment?"

"No. Look, everybody's scared of something. I just, uh...I'm not gonna let it hold me back."

"Huh." Dean said

"So..." Amanda began

"Christo." Dean said REALLY quietly

"I'm sorry. Did you say something?" Amanda asked unaffected. Dean hesitated

"Christo?" He said, the statement becoming a question

"I-I didn't, I didn't..." Amanda stuttered confused

"Yeah nothing never mind" Dean said, retiring to his seat

-

Seats

"Alright, well she has got to be the most well-adjusted person on the planet." Dean said sitting down. "There's no demon in her and there's no demon getting in her."

"So it could be anyone on the plane." Sam summarized. "Anywhere"

The plane began to rattle around in the air and Dean gripped on to the armrest and Faith's arm for dear life.

"Come on! That can't be normal!" Dean said.

"Hey, it's just a bit of turbulence." Sam said, trying to calm his brother down.

"This plane is going to crash, so stop treating me like I'm freakin' four!" Dean whispered harshly.

"Okay, you've got to calm down!" Faith told him

"I'm sorry! I can't!" Dean whispered harshly

"YES! You can!" Faith said sternly

"Dude! Stop the touchy-feely-self-help-yoga shit!" Dean said in a loud whisper.

"Dean," Faith began "when you panic you leave yourself wide open to demonic possession so you've got to calm the fuck down right now!" She scolded. Dean took some calming deep breaths "Good." Faith said "Okay, I think I found an exorcism in here that will work." She opened their dad's journal to the correct page.

"What do we have to do?" Sam asked.

"It's two parts. The first part expels the demon from the body and makes it manifest, which actually makes it more powerful." Faith explained.

"More powerful?" Dean asked.

"Yeah. It doesn't need to possess anyone anymore. Which is actually a good thing." Faith stated.

"Why is this a good thing?" Sam asked.

"Because" Faith began "the second part sends the bastard back to Hell. Once and for all."

"Well, first thing first, we have to find the thing." Dean pointed out.

-

Dean and Faith were walking up and down the aisle of the plane with their EMF's

"Find anything?" she asked.

"No, nothing" Dean replied "How much time do we have?"

"15 minutes." Faith replied "Maybe we missed someone."

"Maybe the thing's just not on the plane." Dean told her

"You believe that?" She asked

"I will if you will." Dean said and Faith looked at him like he was crazy. Suddenly, Faith froze. Dean followed her gaze until he landed on the co-pilot who had just stepped out of the cockpit.

"What is it?" Dean asked

"Christo." Faith said and the co-piolet flinched and turned to look at them with black eyes, revealing himself to be the demon. The co-piolet didn't seem to notice them and went back to the cockpit. Faith and Dean stared at each other.

-

Dean and Faith briskly walked back to their seats.

"It's the co-pilot" Faith told Sam

"What?" He asked

"Did I freaking stutter Samuel?! It's. the. co-pilot!" Faith said

"And you told me to calm down" Dean told San

"I will end your life" Faith told Dean, pointing at him and giving him a stern glare. Dean looked away and Sam stood up

"Let's go talk to Amanda"

-

The three walked to the back of the plane

"She's not going to believe this, dude." Sam said.

"We've got twelve minutes." Faith told him, Dean still looking like he was going to throw up

"Oh, hi. The flight's not to bumpy for you, I hope." Amada said, recognizing Dean.

"Actually, that's kinda what we need to talk to you about." Sam said and Dean closed the curtain that hung in the back of the plane.

"Um, okay. What can I do for you?" Amada asked.

"Okay. This is going to sound nuts. But, we don't really have time for the 'the truth is out there' speech." Dean said.

"Look." Faith began "We know you were on flight 2485. And we've spoken to some of the other passengers and we know it wasn't mechanical failure that brought down the plane."

"And we need your help to stop it from happening again." Sam finished.

"I'm...I...I'm sorry. I'm very busy." Amanda said and she tried to push past the two giants guarding the door.

"Wait, just listen to me. The pilot from flight 2485, Chuck Lambert, he's dead." Dean told her

"Wait. What? Chuck is dead?" Amanda asked.

"He died in a plane crash. Now, that's two plane crashes in two months, you don't think that's strange?" Faith said.

"Look, there was something wrong with flight 2485. Maybe you sensed it, maybe you didn't. But there's something wrong with this plane too." Sam explained.

"Amanda, you have to believe us." Faith pleaded.

Amanda hesitated for a moment then said, "On 2485, there was this...this man...he had these eyes."

"Yes! That's exactly what we're talking about!" Dean said.

"But, I don't understand. What are you asking me to do?" Amanda asked.

"Okay, the co-piolet, we need you to bring him back here." Dean instructed her.

"What does he have to do with any of this?" Amada asked.

"We really don't have time to explain. We just need to talk to him okay." Dean said.

"Well, how am I supposed to do that?" Amanda questioned.

"Whatever it takes" Sam explained "tell him something's broken back here, whatever will get him out of the cockpit

"Do you know that I could lose my job..." Amanda started.

"You're going to lose a lot more than that if you don't help us out." Dean said cutting her off. Amanda stared at all three of them for a moment before nodding and going to get the co-pilot. Dean pulled their dad's journal out of his leather jacket and handed it to Sam, then he and Faith stood on either side of the door and waited for the co-pilot. When he entered Dean punched him square in the jaw sending him flying towards Faith who climbed on to his chest and kept him pinned down. Then Dean pulled out duct tape and put it over the demon's mouth.

"Wait. What are you doing? You said you were just gonna talk to him."

"We are gonna talk to him." Dean said, splashing holy water on his skin, which sizzled

"Oh, my god. What's wrong with him?" Amanda asked

"Look." Faith began "We need you calm. We need you outside the curtain."

"Well, I don't underst- I don't know-"

"Don't let anybody in, okay?" Dean asked "Can you do that? Can you do that? Amanda?"

"Okay. Okay." Amanda said, leaving, Dean continued to punch the demon

"Hurry up, Sam." Faith said "I don't know how much longer we can hold him."

"Regna terrae, cantate Deo, psallite Domino. Tribuite virturem deo. Exorcizamus te, omnis satanicas potesas, omnis incision infernalis adversariy, ominous legio, omnis congregatio et secta diabolica -" The demon hit the Holy Water out of Faith's hand and sent Dean flying across the room. Sam stopped the exorcism to check on them. The demon ripped off the tape covering his mouth and grabbed Sam by his hoodie.

"I know what happened to your girlfriend." It said with an evil smile, like it got a sick twisted pleasure from this. "She died screaming. Even now she burns!" Faith got up and started beating the demon

"SAM NOW!" She shouted. Sam looked at the book and continued

"Ergo draco maledicte et omnis legio diabolica adjuramus te. Cessa decipere humanas creaturas, eisque aeternae Perditionis venenum propinare. Vade, Satana, inventor et magister omnis fallaciae, hostis humanae salutis. Humiliare sub potenti manu dei, contremisce et effuge, invocato a nobis sancto et terribili nomine, quem inferi tremunt." He finished the exorcism as the demon kicked their dad's journal out of reach. Black smoke poured from it's mouth and it screamed, then the smoke disappeared into the vents.

"Where'd he go?" Sam asked

"It's in the plane! Hurry up! We got to finish this!" Dean yelled and stayed to look over the injured co-pilot while Sam and Faith searched for their dad's hunting journal. Before they could make it a very far, Faith saw the journal and reached for it just as the plane went dark and started falling. All the passengers and flight attendants started screaming. Faith fell forwards with the book, though still not grabbing it. Sam caught himself on a chair.

Dean sprawled himself across the exit sign screaming

The plane started gaining speed just as Faith found the journal and began to finish the exorcism

The plane started gaining speed just as Faith found the journal and began to finish the exorcism.

"Ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, Domine. Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire te rogamus, audi nos. Ut inimicos sanctae Ecclesiae humiliare digneris, te rogamus, audi nos. Terribilis Deus de sanctuario suo. Deus Israhel ipse truderit virtutem et fortitudinem plebi Suae. Benedictus deus. Gloria patri!" As soon as she finished reading there was a bright electrical charge as the plane leveled back out and she took a deep breath. Amanda sighed in relief as Sam finally let go of the seat, Dean still sprawled against the exit, terrified.

-

Airport

The plane had safely landed back at Gate 13 and all the passengers began to exit the plane and where greeted by police, paramedics, and the NTSB. The three walked past Amada who was answering the FBI's questions and saw her mouth "Thank you" at them. They nodded in response.

"Let's get out of here." Dean said and they started to walk out of the airport.

"Are you okay?" Faith asked Sam. He stopped walking and turned around to answer her.

"Faith... It...It knew about Jessica." Sam said.

"Sam," she began "these things, they read minds. They lie. That's all it was." she assured him.

"Yeah." Sam whispered, although he didn't sound convinced.

"Come on" Faith said walking toward the exit.

-

Sam, Dean, and Faith met back up with Max again, Faith being happy to be greeted with her Mustang once more, and Max feeling slightly better

"Thank you so much guys... You saved a lot of people. Your dad is going to be proud." She said "even if Max didn't help at the end, she really did help with working it out" she smiled

"We'll see you around Faith." Sam said as Faith smiled walked away leaving the siblings standing by the Impala.

"Hey, Faith!" Dean yelled calling him back over, "I meant to ask, how did you get my number anyways? I've only had it for like six months."

"Your dad gave it to me." She explained.

"What? When did you talk to him?" Max asked.

"Well, I didn't exactly talk to him. I called his number and his voice message said to give you a call." She said. "Anyways, thanks again guys. Call me if you need a hand, okay?" And with that she left, leaving a very confused Sam, Dean, and Max. They sat on the hood of the Impala and Dean tried to call their dad.

"This doesn't make any sense. I've tried calling Dad and the number is out of service." Sam said. Dean put the phone on speaker and sure enough their dad's voice came through

"This is John Winchester. I can't be reached. If this is an emergency, call my son, Dean, 785-555-0179, or my daughter Max, 623-555-0147. They can help."

Max and Dean exchanged a look.

Sam stood up looking furious and got in the passenger seat, slamming the door behind him.
