It's a little one, but I'm happy with how it came out.
Dean launched himself in front of Sam right before the gunshot was heard. Quickly retreating footsteps reverberated off of the walls. Tears streamed down Sam's face as he knelt in front of his brother. He searched for breathing, a pulse -- any sign of life. There was a faint heartbeat. He was barely alive. Sam dialed for an ambulance. There wasn't much more he could do other than wait and hope.
Hours passed. Finally Dean stirred. He was alive.
"Sammy?"
"I'm right here"
Sam slipped his hand into Dean's, rubbing the back of his older brother's hand with his thumb. He wasn't completely awake yet, but he was getting there.
A few more minutes passed before Dean's eyes opened.
He looked to Sam, who was still holding his hand, "where am I and what happened?"
"You're in the hospital, and you took a bullet for me"
Tears again. He couldn't take all this crying anymore. He quickly wiped his eyes with his free hand.
"It should be me there" he scorned.
"No. I'm your big brother. It's my job to protect you"
Sam smiled against the hot tears rolling down his cheeks.
"Thank you" he choked out with a small, sarcastic laugh.
"Anytime" Dean replied with a cocky smile.
Sam quickly leaned in to peck Dean's lips.
"You should rest" he pointed out after pulling away.
"How much sleep have you gotten since I've been in here"
"I'm fine. Don't worry. It's my turn to worry over you"
Dean smiled before laying back in the hospital bed.
"I love you" he mumbled before closing his eyes.
"Love you more. Always." Sam whispered back.
