Chapter 2

Lily’s POV

“Scorpius Malfoy.”

A series of whispers broke out in the room, echoing off the stone walls, making it sound like a loud hum to my ears. About three quarters of the hall whipped their heads around to look at my reaction, whilst the other quarter (who obviously had no idea about the infamous Hogwarts relationship of a Potter and a Malfoy,) namely first and second years, just applauded politely at the figure entering the hall from one of the back arches.

I gaped at him disbelievingly, which quickly turned into a glare. What the hell? How could he not tell me this!?

To the third person, it must have looked rather funny, almost like a tennis match as students glanced between Scorpius and me.

His silver eyes darted over the heads of the other students and connected with mine almost instantly. He even had the nerve to smirk as he sent me a wink! A few girls across the hall glowered at me as Scorpius took his seat next to Hagrid at the top table, all the while keeping eye contact with me.

Infuriating boy!

Well to be honest, he wasn’t really a boy anymore.

“Lily? Did you know that he-”

I cut Roxy off, by shaking my head slightly. “What a prat,” she snorted, glaring at Scorpius.

“I think it’s cute that he surprised her,” Jake murmured from across the table. “Well once you get over the shock...and stop giving him such fierce glares, that is.”

Everyone was interrupted by Professor McGonagall who cleared her throat for attention. “Now will everyone please settle down. Good. I think we can start the food now.”

With that the tables magically filled up with an assortment of foods from roast beef and chicken, to Shepherd’s pie and Cornish pastries. It smelt heavenly. I hadn’t realised until now how hungry I actually was. As if to emphasise this point my stomach growled loudly causing Roxy to snigger beside me.

I nudged her with my elbow and started helping myself to the piles of food pointedly ignoring a certain pair of silver eyes that were gazing at me.

As the feast went on, conversation gradually turned back towards my relationship.

“Did you really not know?”

“I can’t believe he did that without telling you!”

“Nah, it was sweet.”

All my friends were saying giving me a slight headache. So if Scorpius was a Professor now, did that mean she was no longer allowed to see him? Would it matter that I wasn’t technically his student anyway as I didn’t do his subject?

I couldn’t help but glance back at the top table to see that Scorpius was no longer looking at me, but was engaged in discussion with the Arts teacher. She was extremely beautiful and looked rather young herself, early twenties maybe? Started last year, I never chose to take art, so wouldn’t know much about her. All I knew was that I felt a bubble of jealousy as she laughed at whatever he was saying.

“Lils?”

“What?” I snapped turning back to the table.

“Whoaa, calm down. I think someone’s getting a little green eyed,” Roxy laughed.

“I’m not!” I protested.

“You so are...” she sang pouring gravy over her Yorkshire Puddings.

“Am not!”

“Believe what you want honey, but you’re not fooling me,” she winked and went back to shovelling her mouth full of food.

By the end of the feast everyone was stuffed full to the brim and leisurely lolling about on the benches waiting for the headmistress to send everyone do their common rooms. Roxy was making paper airplanes out of the napkins on the tables and using her wand to fly them across the hall, from which she received several awed looks from the first years. I caught Darcy sitting at the Ravenclaw table roll her eyes and shake her head before turning to the front to send a flirty smile in Scorpius’ direction, who just nodded back courteously in return.

“Attention please!” McGonagall said loudly, claiming everyone’s attention. “Thank you, now I hope you all enjoyed the feast. It is now time for everyone to retire to their common rooms and beds, as I recognise it has been a rather long day for most of you.  Prefect’s may I ask you to escort the first years up to the dorms? I bid goodnight to you all,” she finished.

I started to get up to see if the new prefects were alright. “Oh, Miss Potter could I talk to you in my office please?”

I blinked and looked up realising she was talking to me over all the students scrambling to be the first out the hall. I pointed to myself in surprise.

“Yes, there is no other Miss Potter here, am I right?”

I blushed and shook my head.

“Well then, I will see you in ten minutes. Make sure Mr McLaren does not throw another one of his hissy fits will you?” Professor McGonagall said curtly before striding off down the aisle between the tables.

I glanced at Castor who looked like he was getting frustrated. Did McGonagall really make him a prefect? Why? Just why?

After 5 minutes or so, the hall was pretty empty with only a few sixth and seventh years milling around waiting for the first years to get settled in. I wanted to go and find Scorpius as he had seemingly disappeared right after the feast. I wanted to find him and give him a piece of my mind for keeping me in the dark about this! I expect that’s what McGonagall wanted to talk to me about.

I trudged up to the Headmistress’s office and stood outside the stone gargoyle realising that I didn’t actually know the password.

Well a fat lot of good that was.

I tried a few words and all the passwords from last year but no luck. I was just about to give up when I heard footsteps behind me. Thinking it was another Professor I eagerly turned around in case they happened to know the password and my heart literally stopped for a couple of seconds.

Standing in front of me was a boy. Not just any old boy either, an extremely gorgeous one that looked around my age, or even a little older. Over 6ft tall and jet black hair with strands that fell to cover parts of his ocean blue eyes. He looked like a model gone rogue with the clothes he was wearing.

Why was he here?

Or more importantly, who was he anyway?

His blue eyes flicked over me, a charming smile appearing on his face and nodded his head. It was amazing how that small gesture could send my stomach into a frenzy of butterflies. Not as much as when Scorpius smiled, but still.

“Well what’s a beautiful girl like you doing out here this late? These miserable castle walls don’t look too friendly,” he said easily. His voice held a hint of an American accent.

I smiled and quickly composed myself. So he was a smooth talker? “Well this girl can protect herself. Even with all these creepy gargoyles and statues around,” I said.

He raised his eyebrows, a playful half smile still on his face. “I can see that,” he nodded his head towards the ugly eagle gargoyle.

“Ahh, maybe this one’s giving me a little bit of a hassle.”

Somewhere in the back of my mind, a little voice was nagging at me. Was this classified as flirting? I was only talking to him, in a friendly way. Scorpius wouldn’t have minded, besides, it’s not as if he doesn’t charm his own way through life with some of the girls he came across.

Mystery boy chuckled, “It’s a good job I know the password then isn’t it?” He moved past me to stand infront of the gargoyle. “Gilli-gilli-gilli,” he said and the statue started to turn slowly to reveal a spiral stone staircase. I couldn’t help but admire how deep and velvety his voice sounded.

I closed my eyes and slapped myself lightly on the cheek. I re-opened them to find mystery guy staring at me, an amused expression on his face. “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m all good,” I said falsely, smiling brightly.

“Right...” he trailed off, sticking one hand in his leather jacket and the other extended in front of him. “Ladies first.”

“Thank you,” I said, trying to hide the fact that his charm was actually getting to me slightly. Yeah I had a boyfriend and he was extremely attractive as well, but I was only human!

He laughed again “always the gentleman.”

I practically ran up the spiralled staircase and almost into Professor McGonagall who was standing at the entrance to the office.

She looked up as I entered. “Well I’m glad you could make it eventually Miss Potter, even if you are 15 minutes late.”

“Sorry Professor, I got held up by the gargoyle as I didn’t know the password-”

“And I came to the rescue,” finished mystery boy behind me.

McGonagall looked past me and gave him a very rare smile. I guess his charm worked with every girl, irrelevant of age. “Ahh I see you two have already met.”

“In sorts, though we haven’t been properly introduced,” the boy said leaning against the doorframe.

“Miss Potter, this is Oliver Black. I would like you, as head girl to show Mr Black around the school,” McGonagall said.

I stared at her blankly, confused. “So he’s a new student? Why wasn’t he sorted with the first years?”

“I’m far from a first year,” he said confidently.

“Mr Black is under...somewhat special circumstances. He has transferred here from a school in New York for his last year and has been placed in Griffindor by the sorting hat before the feast.”

I nodded taking it all in. But why would he transfer in his last year anyway? I had millions of questions running through my brain, but Professor McGonagall was already talking again. “Now, it is getting rather late and you all have class tomorrow, so I suggest both of you get off to bed,” she said before looking as if she was contemplating something. “One more thing,” I paused as I was about to head back down the staircase. “Lily, I would appreciate if you keep your relationship with Mr Malfoy to the minimum and not display your affection in front of the other students.”

I nodded so as to say I understood. “Well goodnight to both of you.”

We both headed back down the spiral staircase and out into the torch lit halls. I guess she hadn’t wanted to call my into her office to forbid me from seeing Scorpius...It was going to be hard, not being able to kiss him whenever I wanted but I would put up with it as long as he was here.

It was a bit awkward for a couple of minutes, walking in silence, not knowing what to say before he broke the tension.

“So Lily Potter huh? The famous Lily Potter.”

I raised an eyebrow, “What about the famous Lily Potter?”

“I never thought I’d be getting shown around a school, of all things, by you,” he replied.

“I’m not famous. My father is the famous one.”

“Rather modest. Though I think you underestimate your popularity. The pretty young redhead, only daughter of Harry Potter. Even in New York your name is well known among the wizarding world. Especially between the boys.”

I blushed and bit my lip, thinking of a response but none came.

“Rendered speechless I see?” he asked smirking.

“Does your charm work on all the women?” I shot back.

He surprised me by laughing, “You noticed?”

I smiled, “It’s not often you see a smile off McGonagall.”

“Most of the time it works, when I want it too,” he replied with a shrug.

“So Oliver Black, why did you transfer in your last year?” I wondered aloud, voicing one of my many questions.

“Ahh, that’s complicated. My life in New York was not something I am exactly proud of. I will tell you one day, just not right now,” he said in all seriousness. A dark shadow had fallen across his face as he said this, making me think that whatever had happened had taken a huge toll on him.

Not really thinking about what I was doing I patted him on the arm gently. “It’s fine, I’m sorry for bringing it up.”

His eyes flashed towards mine in gratefulness as we walked in silence up to Gryffindor tower.

Are we missing Scorpius? I certainly am but I didn’t know whether he would fit in this chapter...it just didn’t seem right. But he will definitely be in the next one!

Otherwise HAPPY YEAR OF THE DRAGON!!!
