Another day hitting the books. You were always surrounded by them where ever you go. It could be electronic books, audio books, or reading a small pamphlet about a new store that was newly refurbished. People around you called you a 'bookworm' but it was in a good way. They would never tease you about it because you were an intellectual person.
And that's when you decided to work at the library.
So then it began your story of stacking books all day, making sure they were in alphabetical order, cleaning up the children's corner, returning reader's books or renewing them...
It was a never ending cycle.
A lot of people would argue that this kind of a job is so tedious and boring. But for you, it was the best thing in the world.
"Argh! After we find the right book, you guys are taking me out to lunch today!" a piercing cry reverberated from the entrance as you peeked out through one of the aisles. There were four new civilians you've never seen before. Working here everyday, you always see a few recognizable faces and a ton of people who come here everyday that they even sit down to have a chat with you. Gently placing a book back on the shelves, you rushed over to them.
"Um, hello. Is there anything you are searching for?" you asked shyly. The tall brunette immediately answered.
"Ah, yes! Glad you asked." he suddenly knelled down before you as he caressed your hands. You flushed instantly. "Would you care telling me where the latest 'How to Commit Suicide' books?" he stood up to meet your gaze. "It's a series~" he whispered.
You gulped. This man was certainly peculiar. "Uh, not that I would know of..."
"Oi, Dazai! We're not here to screw around." a somewhat bulky stature blonde man stood next to him with his arms crossed.
"Woah! These children books are colorful! There's even pop up books too!" a white haired boy awed in fascination as he was flipping through a children's book. You sweat dropped thinking that a teenage boy was reading a pop up book.
"I know right, Atsushi kun? Aren't they so pretty?" Dazai twirled around towards him as they read the book together.
"Kunikida~ Hurry up and find the book~" a loud whine echoed through the children's corner where a man with a brown cap was relaxing on the couches. The blonde man that towered you sighed in annoyance.
"Pardon me for the rudeness but would you mind looking for the book called, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'?" he asked.
You blinked. "It should be right around where they are." you pointed to the 3 of them who were searching for the book.
"You're wrong about that, miss." the man with the cap suddenly appeared right behind you, making you squeak in surprise.
"If you would please, Ranpo san." Kunikida requested as Ranpo sighed.
"Alright~ Just because none of you are smart enough to do this~"
"Um, what do you mean by that sir?"
"We're talking about an old ancient artifact that was based on the fable, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'. You see, we're all a part of the Armed Detective Agency and we're currently on a mission. The clues that was left with us were a map of Yokohama and a red marker circled where we are standing right now." Ranpo explained. He went on.
"There was a box that was left under the house of the murder scene last night. On the box there was the map tapped to it and the Greek writing of a famous writer. There were also written letters of T, B, W, C, and W hidden in the map which if you can figure out the Greek writing, it says Aesop which could only mean that he was a famous writer of the fable, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'." Ranpo puffed out his chest for emphasis- like he was trying to show off his smart aleck skills. And it worked.
"W-Wow... I'm certainly impressed that you were able to manage solving the mystery!"
"Heh heh... It's actually just my ability though."
"Ability?"
He grinned. "I'll tell you all about it later but right now, we have to find the book."
"No need. I've certainly heard about the book you are looking for." you walked to the check out desk and fumbled on a few things. This was the only small secret that they've hidden in this library. You took the key that you've been hiding with you whenever you were working here and sat on the carpeted floor and flipped the small rug over to see a hidden lock attached to the floor. You inserted the key and turned it- to reveal a tiny dusty space and placed carefully in it, was the book.
"Here it is." you pulled it out while blowing off the particles and laid them on the counter. The rest of the gang noticed this and immediately rushed over.
"Did we find the book?" Atsushi asked.
"This certainly is a real book. We have to tell the president about this news. Let's go guys." Kunikida ordered as Kunikida slightly bowed as if he was saying thanks and Dazai winked at you along with Atsushi waving goodbye shyly.
"Thank you for coming. I hope you have a wonderful day." you pursed your lips into a smile at them and Ranpo.
He tipped his hat and flashed his smile. "Same goes to you, miss." and the four were gone.
Another few days has passed with the same familiar faces passing by and dropping off at the library. You couldn't help but to daydream back to when the 4 members of the ADA were here. You certainly adored smart brainiac people so you simply thought about Ranpo. Humming your favorite tune, you pushed the library cart though the aisles and put the books back to the correct order. It wasn't long until you finally realized that the man with the brown cap was on the other side of the shelf, staring at you.
You jumped up in surprised as you squeaked again a little.
"R-Ranpo san! You scared me!" you whispered, with a hint of scolding. He chuckled.
"Aha~ Sorry if I did! You looked so concentrated and cute that I couldn't help but to stare at you!" he gave you a cheeky grin as you blushed.
"I never got your name. What is it?"
"(F/N)." you replied a bit oddly. Why would he want your name? Usually people who checks out book here never even bothers to ask what your name is.
"Well, (F/N)! Are you free at the moment?"
"Uh..." you glanced at your watch. It was almost lunch time which meant another librarian would take your spot for a few hours until you start your shift again. "I guess so."
He beamed with excitement. "Then I suggest you go on a little date with me!" and without you even getting a chance to answer back, Ranpo rushed out of his aisle and grabbed you by the hand and rushed out the door.
Where he took you was a bakery shop. The one you always went to when you needed a little breather from the library. Ranpo wanted to take you out on a little date but sadly he forgot his wallet back at the agency so you paid instead. He felt extremely guilty.
"Ranpo san~ You don't have to worry about it. I don't mind paying. Plus, I'm glad you took me out to my favorite bakery shop. I go here everyday." you gave him a reassuring smile as you sipped the cup of coffee.
"I know~ But I'm the one who asked you out so it's really pathetic not having me to pay for it!" he whined but a second later, he munched on the slice of cheesecake.
"May I ask, Ranpo san?" you inquired.
"Just Ranpo is fine, (F/N) chan." he smiled.
"How is your work? Did everything turn out fine?"
"Mystery was solved in just seconds thanks to me! It was a very easy case." he boasted with a proud grin plastered on his cheeks.
You laughed. "You're a very smart person, Ranpo. The agency must rely on your very heavily."
He blushed at the compliment as he lowered his head, avoiding your gaze. What happened? Was it something you said?
"D-Don't say things like that... You're making me blush..." he mumbled, slipping his hat off to cover his face and let out a little whimper. You couldn't help but to melt in this scene. He looked absolutely adorable when he is embarrassed.
'For a man that likes to show off and boast about himself gets all shy when he gets a compliment...' you summarized along with the cute smile on your face. Ranpo peeked from his hat to see you smiling so beautifully that it made his cheeks even redder than before.
Ever since that small date, Ranpo would not stop coming over to the library to meet you. You were placing books in the right order like a robot until when you pulled out a huge bulky book, Ranpo appeared on the other side holding a coffee cup.
"Good morning, (F/N) chan~ I see you're working hard as ever, huh?"
You smiled brightly. "Good morning, Ranpo. And I hope you're working hard too, am I right?" you teased as his face fell, dodging the question.
"Anyways, what brings you here early in the morning?" you asked, continuing to place the books on the shelves.
"I came here to bring you a special treat. Here." he slid the coffee cup across the shelves. The toasty warm beverage were pressed gently against your palms. You blinked at him in surprise as he began blushing again.
"I-I always see you working hard unlike me..." he mumbled. "A-And you look a bit tired! That's why I decided to get you coffee! Plus, I didn't pay you back last time..."
"Aw, Ranpo. You really didn't have to." you brought the coffee close to your nose as you sniffed it. "But thank you so much for being considerate. I appreciate it very much."
It wasn't long till Ranpo's blush flew away and were replaced with a huge grin. He was ecstatic that he accepted the coffee and that you loved it. "Really?! Then I'll buy you coffee every morning!"
You laughed. "Thank you, but remember, drinking too much caffeine isn't good for my health."
"Then I'll buy you ramune!"
"During winter?"
"Yeah! Anything to make you happy!"
Your cheeks rose on that statement. "Ranpo, why do you insist on buying me drinks?" you asked jokingly.
"S-Should I buy you something else then?"
"No, silly. I'm just wondering why you keep doing this. If you want to go on a date again, then I'll be more than happy too."
"You would?! YAY!!!" Ranpo yelled across the aisles as he sprang up and down, running around everywhere.
"Shh!!" you put your finger to your lips, reminding him that he was still at the library and seem to have forgotten where he was. When he was about to run out the exit, he turned around with the brightest grin on his cheeks as he opened his eyes.
"I love you, (F/N) chan!"
