CHAPTER 8

I don’t even know why I had been thinking about bumping with him around here since Roxy told us that news.

Pero si daddy, lagi lagi kong nakikita. Afternoon to evening kasi ang shift namin pareho. I get to eat with him kapag hindi sya gaanong occupied sa pasyenteng binabantayan nya, or di kaya naman minsan ay sa office nya.

Nurses, my clinical instructor and my co-nursing students know that my father works here. Pero wala namang special treatment na nangyayari. Pare-pareho kami ng ginagawang trabaho. Why would i want special treatment? The reason why I’m here is that I want to learn.

I was checking my patient’s chart when someone had hit the bell. Lahat kaming nasa nurses’ station ay napatingin.

“Admission.” The staff nurse said as he was carrying his patient’s chart and a blue basket.

Ma’am Santos, our clinical instructor asked.

“Ako na po, ma’am.” I answered.

The staff nurse starTed endorsing his patient.

Edgar R. Sebastian. Suite ang kinuha nito. Kagagaling lang nyang ICU. He went for a brain surgery a week ago at kahapon lamang nagising. They had monitored his condition for 24 hours at lahat naman ay maayos na kaya bingyan na ng permiso na mailipat na dito sa area namin. And oh, pasyente pala sya ni daddy.

Ma’am Santos asked the nurse.

Saglit akong natigilan. Nabaril? Brain surgery? ICU?

Agad kong inisip kung ano ang last name ni Dylan but what the hell, I have no idea!

Check his vitals agad agad and apply the proper interventions.” Ma’am Santos said.

“Ah, ma’am.. ano kasi.. suite kasi eh.

“Of course, miss Buenavista. You will just help them para sa ganoon ay dagdag sa experience mo.” She answered nicely.

When I got in, nginitian ako ng babae.

“Good pm, ma’am, sir.”

“Go ahead, hija.” The nice lady said. “Student nurse ka?” She asked.

“Yes po, ma’am.” Medyo kabado kong sagot. But I tried really hard na wag ipahalata.

“Anong year mo na?”

“Third year po.”

NAkangiti kong sagot. “!20/80 po ang BP ni sir. His other signs are within the normal range din po, everything’s fine.” Magalang kong pagbibigay alam sakanila.

“That’s great.” Nakangiting sagot ng pasyente.

“I’m glad you’re out of danger now, honey.” I could only smile at their sweetness. Parang si daddy at mommy lang. Through the years, mahal pa rin nila ang isa’t isa. “Buti na lang at we had the best doctor.” Dagdag pa nito.

“Oh, you might know his doctor, hija.” Sabi nyang muli sakin. I was about to ask who was his doctor kaya lamang ay nagsalita na ito. “Oh! Buenavista ka? Are you relaTed to doctor Enrico Buenavista?” Tanong nya.

I grinned at her. “Daddy ko po.”

“Oh, wow! So ikaw pala ang apo ni Dr. Federico Buenevista? Ang galing! You grandfather was my father’s doctor when he was still alive. And believe me, your lolo had saved my father a lot of times already. It was sad when we found out that your lolo passed away before my father does. And now, ang father mo naman ang doctor ng asawa ko and you, his daughter, are my husband’s nurse.” Bakas ang pagkamangha sa boses nito. Wow. Talagang wow. Their family must really believe my lolo and daddy’s greatness in their very own profession.

“A great coincidence.” Singit ng pasyente.

“Or maybe destiny?” The wife joked at bigla akong nagulat. Destiny? Kanino? Bakit? Oh my. Why do I feel like tama ang hinala ko kanina pa? No. Ugh.

Destiny? Walang desinty!

“Baka kilala mo ang anak namin, Maxine. Parehas kayo ng pinapasukan. Pero magkaibang course kayo eh. He’s into business.”

Heaven and Earth, thank you.

“Good evening, ma’am, sir. I have you meds po.” She said. Ngumiti ako sakanya at maging sa mag-asawa.

“I’ll go ahead na po.”
