this is what I like to call the 'old tv' effect, because I honestly don't know what else to call it. Here are a couple examples of where I've used it in covers.
YUSS~ so, what's similar about all of these covers? yup, the blue/red effect, and that's what this tutorial'll (hopefully) teach you.
I'll teach you how to do the effect on the picture shown in the second cover up there. The link to it is in the external link.
1. Open up a new document, turn the background into a layer, and turn the colour black.
If you read the last tutorial, you'll remember that you double-click onto your background layer to turn it into 'Layer 0' and then double-click again to get the first pop-up. You can change the colour by going to 'colour overlay' and selecting black.
2. Drag the image onto your document.
3. Duplicate your layer
You do this by right-clicking on the layer and selecting 'duplicate layer.'
4. Motion blur the duplicated layer
go to: file > filters > motion blur.
5 pixels of motion blur at 180º should be enough.
6. Colour effect
Double-click on the motion-blurred layer and you should receive a pop-up that looks somewhat like this:
DESELECT the G and B boxes.
aaaaaaaand.... MAGIC!
If you do not have the option of R, G and B boxes, but instead get something along the lines of C, M, Y and K boxes, it's because your colour coded thing on photoshop has set itself to the CMYK colour filter.
But, no fear! To fix this, go to:
image (along the header bar at the top of your screen) > mode > RGB mode.
It may ask you to merge layers and rasterise them, but click no to all of them. You don't want to merge your layers.
7. What you now have should look like this. Vaguely. If you want to delete the red glow around her hair, select the eraser tool, put it on a soft, round brush (hardness = 0%) and erase the red contour on the duplicated layer of the original model pic.
If you can't distinguish the lines properly (the blue and red contours), just move either one of the layers to the side, just slightly. It's make them pop more.
8. Play around with it!
You can even drag the upper layer to hell.
