Chapter 5
Isabelle.
One.
Two.
Three.Okay.
Smile.
"I'm fine Dad." I held my smile as I looked up at my dad rushing around as he packed his messenger bag with random things off the table.
"You sure? You dont want me to stay around to keep a check on your first day?" he mutters distractedly. It wasn't like he was going to stay even if I said yes. But yet, I wanted to say yes just to gauge his reaction.
"No, you go ahead. I'll get myself around." Again.
"Okay hon. Make sure to eat healthy. I'll give you a call as soon as I land.... Aaandd- Oh God Im forgetting something I just cant remember ... Shit! Shit! Shit! "He scratches his head and looks awfully young doing that. I lean against the doorjam and randomly call out stuff he must've forgotten. Its routine.
"Yep! That's it!" He messes my hair as he jogs back into his room to get his phone. I know its hard to stay without your phone but its no wonder where I get my lack of technological love from. I dont even own a phone. And dad has a hard time remembering he does. It would have been so much easier from the start if he did.
" All done. Take care sweety. Call me if you need anything." He kisses my head and runs out to the waiting cab. I wave at him from the porch miming his big smile my cheeks aching.
I've heard somewhere that if you keep smiling for five minutes straight the smile comes out naturally later. Take my word, its horse crap. Its only that when you keep smiling you realize how awkward and stupid you look so you almost smile at the situation.
The minute the car disappears around the corner I lock the door behind me and walk out zipping up my hoodie.
Its a pretty town. Small and warm and green. But I've definitely seen better. The people keep talking to each other over the hedges and everyone looks too darn happy. Its almost infectious and I find myself walking with a spring in my step. I round another corner trying to remember the places at the same time and reach a small recreational area with lots of kids with skateboards and cycles. As I walk closer to them I notice its like a park with all these ramps set up where kids are doing some real cool flips in the air.
"Out OUT!! Get out of my way!" I hear someone yell and am almost shoved aside as this person rushes past me and comes to a screeching halt ahead of me.
The person turns around and pushes off their helmet. Caramel hair tumbles out of the helmet and I'm almost surprised to see its a girl.
She kicks the skateboard to her side and marches over to me.
"You crazy? You just dont stand in the middle of the park doing nothing!" She yells.
"You right now are." I point out.
"I'm talking!" she yells again. Doesn't she realize that I'm just centimeters away from her.
"Actually that's yelling." I say amused that this girl was seriously wrung up.
She opens her mouth to yell again but is cut off by another voice.
"Carmen, come on now." We both turn around to another girl.
"Sorry. She didn't mean to yell-" the other girl has a smaller voice but she looks bigger than Carmen.
" It's okay.I was leaving anyways." I smile at her and turn to leave as another skater rushes past us.
"Or you could hang out near the benches up there. " She points to our right. " Haven't see you around. You new here?" she asks.
"Yeah. I'm Isabelle." I say shaking hands with her.
She has a wide smile as she laughs.
"Well that's my name too. Isabelle. But I go by Elie."
"If you two are done maybe we could leave? " Carmen taps her feet impatiently.
I wave at them and walk towards the metal bleechers to the right where all the food is too. Good.
I buy a pack of cheetos and move towards the middle of the benches and sit looking around. Immediately a crowd of some five six people catch my eye at the bottom of the bleechers. They seem like the kids in highschool that are part of gangs or something and the way they are huddled around the blonde guy says he's obviously the big dog here.
Blonde and dark at the roots his hair looks like a styled mess, which I bet it is. His eyes are light and hooded and he's got a brooding expression on as he smokes holding the white thing between his index and thumb. He is definitely a looker and the way he holds himself, obviously he knows it too. The minute I'm about to look away though he looks up at me. Our eyes barely meet a moment or two and then he looks away showing no interest. Well, well, well.
I immediately find Carmen and Elie on the further end of the park doing some wild moves. I'm so hooked onto their each and every move especially Carmen's that when she leans or jump I do a little on my seat too.
I dunno for how long I sat there but suddenly everyone started dispersing off together as if a bell had gone by. I checked my watch, it was five twenty. Wow, an hour had gone by unnoticed.
As I stood up to leave I heard someone call my name and turned around to see Elie waving her hands above her head. I jumped down the bleechers noisiliy ignoring the annoyed looks from people and jumped right infront of her.
"You dont do that unless you are ten
" Carmen said slyly.
"Who told you I'm not?" I folded my hands across my chest.
Surprisingly Carmen smiled and put out her hand to shake.
"I dont think we were introduced well. I'm Carmen. Carmen Riveira"
I mirrored her smile. "Isabelle Clayton."
"You should come meet our friends. You'll like them." she says and Elie hooks her arm around mine and they both drag me with them without waiting for an answer to the same group I had seen at the bottom of the bleechers.
They stood in a circle laughing and talking over each other. It was almost comical the way they quieted and the circle opened up and they stood shoulder to shoulder with each other with the blonde guy in the centre like they do in movies.I had to bite my smile as we approached them.
"Guys look who we found." Elie announced skipping to the blonde guy leaving me with Carmen. No one said anything. They just stared.
" She's new in here." Carmen supplied.
But they just stared at me like I was a freak display. Not awkward at all. The blonde guy had a bored expression on his face unlike the others who just looked at me wide eyed.I started shifting on my feet uncomfortable.
"Well it was nice to meet you'll too. That was real fun. We should do this sometime again. But I'll just go fo-" I started and turned to leave but then all burst out laughing together.
I smiled and look quizically at Carmen who was also laughing.
"I'm sorry but we just do it everytime someone new comes around." she said amidst her laugh.
And just like that they all crowded around me and started talking all over each other again.
"Kenny." A tall lanky guy with straight hair that fell over his face said.
"Thomas Beckett. They call me 'bucket' ." A burly guy with raven black hair said.
"Blake." The monotone belonged to a ginger head who looked like he belonged to the Seventeen magazine. The tiny bambi eyed girl clinging on his arm peeked up at me with a shy smile, " Nessie.Hi." I mouthed a hi back to her.
" Yo. I'm your Jo and that be my twin broda Louis Salau-" the overdressed twin started but the other wife-beater wearing one cut him off with sharp slap on head and said, " Drop the accent Josh! Im Louis Salauntes by the way and that idiot is my twin, obviously you've guessed that, thanks to my mother!" He grunted and the other twin slapped him back.
"Its cos of your father you moron! You'd know if you paid attention in bio!" Carmen snorted at um- was that Louis again?
"I did pay attention!" The twin said getting in her face.
"Right. Checking out Megan's fake bo-"
"Human Anatomy is an important part of biology!" he shouted back cutting her off.
"And I'd to point out those are some real assets." Kenny piped in and suddenly everyone jumped on him enquiring how he knew that.
I stared from one twin to the other. How could they tell the difference. The looked like photocopies of each other.
"Its the ear gauges. Only Josh wears them. You can pick them out like that." A voice that wasn't introduced spoke beside me and I turned to the blonde guy who was suddenly next to me.
I looked back at the twins and picked out Josh easily noticing the big ear gauge on his right ear.
" Johnathan." he murmured watching his squabling friends. I looked at him once and looked away quickly. He had the kind of voice that's like honey on sand paper? Throaty yet somehow smooth and appealing.
Later that evening I found myself at a diner munching away on- I gotta say this- the worlds best chilly burritios. After the entire fiasco at the park the guys had insisted that I hang around with them until dinner. But I told them I had some work and got away. I just wanted to look around a bit more on my own until dusk. But I told them I'd see them there same time tomorrow. Anyways the staff at the diner were so friendly. The minute the waitress made me blurt out I was new here she shouted that across the room and suddenly everyone was waving and yelling out helos. This place was crazy. I definitely liked it.
As I licked off the last bit of sauce off my finger I noticed a pale grey and blue building that looked totally out of place at this crowded street.
Just like me, I thought.

As I left the grey building I felt the warm aura inside me leaving. It was nothing like I had expected and so much more. I couldn't help the smile that stuck on my face because now I had a new job at coolest place and made some new friends and I was already part of a band. I pulled out the folded drawing from my back pocket and stared at the drawing of me with purple hair rocking out a guitar along with my three other band mates all with different hair colors.
It was almost nine by the time I reached home and unlocked the door. The neighborhood was the safest that's why dad had no worry when he left me here I guess. Like a unsafe one would have made any difference, I countered. I made my way up to my room occasionally arranging and setting things in their place. I checked the voice mail. Dad hadn't called. Again.
My room. Wallpapered by the previous owner with a space theme. I had noticed the glow in the dark stars on the ceilings right away on my first night here. That's the only thing roomy about this place. And thats the only thing which made my room feel homey. Stars were my only constant. Somehow they found me when I had no clue of my where abouts.
One week must have been enough to set up a room but I still hadn't done much unpacking. I stared at the boxes almost wishing them away. They reminded me so much of my life while all I wanted was to disappear into thin air or just be someone- someone else.
I opened the door to my closet and stared at the various outfits some still with the new tags. Perks of having a rich dad who didn't give a dime about me or well rest of the details.
I thought about today and sat down cross legged. Skater girl? Punk band girl? Loner girlThe familiarity of the situation pulling at my heart. When will the search end? When will I finally be able to recognize me without having my clothes or what I do label me?
When will rhetorical questions be answered?
Never.
Was the answer to all 'never'.
My mind worked up stories as I pulled out my faded blue jeans and a local band t-shirt -JUST A MINUTE-which I loved back in Texas.
And once again in 18 years I had made up mind about who I am gonna be.
Isabelle Clayton.
Skater girl with kickass guitar skills.
Now all I had to do was to learn some skate boarding.
