I found it difficult to concentrate all day long because of the dumb note I had gotten earlier. As much as I told myself that it was probably a prank, I couldn't help but wonder what if it was true. Why would anyone want to send me that note anyway? Who could it be? Actually, it didn't matter who it was. What mattered was whether that note had any truth behind it or not.

I hadn't had the chance to really talk to Seth today. He had briefly met me for a few minutes during break but since he hadn't finished his assignment, he had to rush to the library.

When the final bell rang, I was more than relieved to be going home. I wasn't in the mood to talk to Seth. Not yet, at least.

As I neared my locker, my shoulders dropped as I exhaled. Kyla and Kian were waiting for me by my locker. Okay, I change what I said earlier. I wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone at the moment.

"Ava!" Kyla exclaimed as I reached my locker. "I feel like we haven't spoken in forever."

"Ever since Ava's got a boyfriend," Kian spoke up, "she's too busy to spend any time with her friends."

"It's not like that guys," I mumbled, opening my locker.

"Okay then," Kyla said. "Want to go to my place?"

I sighed. "I'm sorry but I'm not really feeling that good. Maybe some other day?"

"Why, what's wrong?" Kian asked, concerned.

"Nothing, just feeling a bit nauseous," I lied, stuffing my books in my locker.

"You'll feel better if we go to Kyla's place," he responded. "I'll make my special strawberry lemonade for you."

"I should-"

"Oh come on," Kyla interrupted. "Please."

"Yeah, it's not like you're grounded anymore," Kian said. "Thanks to Seth, he really did impress your dad with the apology and everything. I'm surprised. Your dad still hasn't warmed up to me."

I forced a smile. "Alright, fine. Let's go."

Exactly 6 songs later, we reached Kyla's house. Once she parked the car, we made our way into the house.

"Is your mom home?" I asked.

"No, she's gone out for a meeting," she answered, pulling the house keys out and unlocking the door.

Throwing her bag on top of the dining table, she made her way into the kitchen and started hunting for food while Kian and I left out bags on the chairs of the dining table.

"Ruffles?" she asked from the kitchen.

"A big bowl," I replied.

Food will always be my true companion.

Kian settled on the couch and turned the TV on. He flipped through the recorded movies, looking for something for watch. Eventually, Kyla came out with two bowls of ruffles and we sat on the couch next to Kian.

Kyla turned to face me and crossed her legs as she placed a pillow on top of her lap.

"Okay, tell me everything," she began. "How are things going with Seth? What was the date like? Did you actually meet his mom?"

Kian muted the TV and mirrored Kyla's position, suddenly interested.

"It was good," I answered honestly. "His mom was very nice."

"And?" Kian asked, his eyebrows rising.

"Nothing," I said with a shrug.

"Is everything okay between the two of you?" Kyla asked.

"Yes, yes," I said quickly. "Everything's fine. He's amazing and he keeps me happy."

"But?" Kian prodded.

I sighed and stayed silent for a moment as I tried to decide whether or not to tell them. "I got this note today."

"What about it?" Kyla asked.

"I'll show it to you, wait," I said as I stood up to go to my bag.

Unzipping it, I pulled my wallet out and removed the carefully folded note. I turned to see Kyla and Kian's eager faces and handed the note to Kyla as I sat in between them again.

Kyla's face scrunched up in confusion as she handed the note to Kian.

"What's this crap?" she said while Kian was still reading the note.

Kian rolled his eyes as he passed the note back to me. "Someone's just trying to get to you. This is clearly a dumb prank."

"That's what I thought too," I responded, "but I don't know. I've just been uncertain all day."

"Then talk to Seth," Kyla spoke up. "Get it cleared so that you can be at peace."

"Should I?" I questioned, unsure.

"Of course," she exclaimed.

"But who wrote this?" Kian asked, snatching the note from me and examining the handwriting. "It's definitely a girl's handwriting."

"How can you be so sure?" Kyla asked with a flat look.

He shrugged and then, suddenly gasped. "What if it's Carla who sent this?"

"Why would she?" I asked with a scowl.

"Well, all of us know how touchy-touchy she was towards Seth during the trip," he answered. "Plus, why wouldn't she want Seth back? I know he's your boyfriend and everything but he is one fine boy."

I shuddered. "Please don't make such comments towards my boyfriend in the future."

He shot me a cheeky grin in response.

"He actually does have a point, though," Kyla agreed, munching on a chip. "What if she realised that she still likes him? And now, she wants to mess with you to break you guys up."

"This is not a T.V. show," I responded, rolling my eyes.

"But think about it," she urged, sitting up straighter. "What if she wants him back?"

"It doesn't matter," I said. "He's with me now. She's too late?"

Kyla raised her eyebrows as she studied my face. "You're not jealous at all? Not insecure?"

I shrugged. "I don't think so. Not yet."

"Then what's the problem?" Kian spoke up.

"Like I said, I'm just..." I trailed off.

"Unsure?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Then talk to him," he repeated what Kyla said earlier.

"Yeah," Kyla agreed, nodding. "This is definitely a prank. For all you know Seth himself may have written this."

I nodded, feeling a bit better. "Maybe you're right."

"So when are you going to talk to him?" Kian asked.

"I think I'll go now," I said, standing up.

Kian mockingly shook his head. "The boyfriend always comes first."

I grinned at him and said, "Sadly."

*

After I texted Seth and confirmed if he was okay with me coming over, I forced Kyla and Kian to drop me at his place.

"Good luck," they chorused from behind me.

"Thanks," I called back as I walked to his door.

Once they were gone, I pressed his doorbell and waited for him to open the door. I heard the padding of footsteps from the other end and then, the door swung open revealing a shirtless Seth.

I stood there, simply staring at him for a moment. He wasn't the bulkiest boy but he did have an impressive set of abs with a V-line that led to his sweatpants which were hanging low on his hips.

A smirk lifted on Seth's face and before he could say anything, I placed a hand on his chest and said, "You clearly workout."

Pushing lightly on his chest, I made my way inside. I was about to remove my hand from his chest and turn to go to the living room but he instantly grabbed my wrist and pulled me to him instead. My body hit his as my breath hitched in my throat. My eyes flickered up to meet his as my breathing quickened.

"What's wrong?" I whispered.

Slowly, he shook his head, blinking.

"Nothing," he whispered back as if talking louder would break this moment. "I just really missed you today."

"I missed you too," I responded in a whisper.

He let go of my wrist and wrapped his arm around my lower back, enveloping me in a hug. I rested my cheek against his chest, all my worries evaporating into thin air for those few moments.

"Ava?" his low voice echoed in the room.

"Yes, Seth?" I said back, my voice barely coming out.

"I love you."

I smiled against his chest, my eyes remaining closed.

"I love you too."

We stayed like that in each other's arms for who knows how long. Eventually, I pulled away to look at him. His hands came up to cup my face, his thumb rubbing my cheek.

Finally, he took a step back from me. Taking my hand in his, he led me to his room.

"I'm glad you came over," he said as we entered his room. "I'm sorry I could barely talk to you at school today."

I shrugged. "That's okay."

Grinning, he jumped onto his bed and rested his head onto his intertwined hands.

"So what did you do today?" he asked as I stood over him at the edge of the bed.

"Nothing much, just the usual," I answered to which he nodded.

When I stayed silent and my eyes wandered around the room, he said, "Is everything okay?"

My eyes shot back to him as I offered him a tight smile. "Yeah."

After a moment, I added, "Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something."

He sat up, crossing his legs and making space for me to sit. I sat down in front of him and fiddled with my fingers. His palm came onto my hand, stopping me.

"What's wrong?" he asked, pressing hand around mine.

Sighing, I pulled the note out from my back pocket and handed it to him. The left side of his mouth lifted up as he quirked an eyebrow at me.

"I must confess," he began, "I have never gotten a love letter before so I am highly flattered at the moment."

I didn't say anything as he opened up the note. Flipping it around, his eyes scanned it and slowly, the smile from his face faded, causing his mouth to part. He swallowed as he glanced up at me.

"Ava, I-"

"That note...it's not true, is it?" I asked, licking my lips.

His eyes fell from my face. My heartbeat quickened as my stomach started to clench.

"Seth?" I asked but he wouldn't look up to meet my eyes. "It's not true, right?"

"I need to tell you something," he said, staring at his sheets.

"Seth, is it true or not?" I questioned through my teeth.

"Ava, I need to explain-"

"Tell me it's not true, goddamnit!" I said, my voice rising with every word.

"Just let me-"

"Just answer my question," I forced out.

He shut his eyes. "I wanted to tell you earlier."

"Seth, answer me."

He shrugged and finally looked up to meet my eyes. And in that moment, I could see it. I could see the guilt in his eyes.

"I don't know, I guess," he responded. "I just need to explain things to you."

But I wasn't listening. I was already out of the door.

"Ava!" he called out as he followed me. "Just hear me out."

I turned around so abruptly, he almost ran into me. I raised my hand to shut him up. "I don't need to hear anything from you anymore. I don't even know why my feelings towards you changed. My instincts about you were right from the start. Don't talk to me ever again."

With that, I walked out of his house. Out of his life.
