Canada’s eyes swept the table at the World Conference, not paying much attention to the speeches—he knew he wouldn’t get a chance to speak anyway, so why bother?
It wasn’t long before his eyes caught someone else who seemed more interested in doodling than listening. He didn’t recognize the boy at first, but after a moment realization clicked. He blushed guiltily as he realized he wasn’t the only country people often forgot.
At the moment, he found himself staring at Australia’s also-frequently-ignored neighbor, New Zealand. Canada had to admit he didn’t know much about the other, but his curiosity was aroused. He spent the rest of the meeting trying to think of a way to open conversation.
Finally, Germany brought the meeting to a close. Canada stood and made his way toward the Oceanic country, but the crowd quickly cut him off and he found himself turned around. A small pout crossed his features as he realized he’d lost New Zealand.
He was about to leave the room when someone bumped into him, sending him sprawling on the ground. Kumajiro bounced out of his arms with a disgruntled squeak.
"Hey, are you alright?" asked a voice. He looked up, blinking in surprise as he came face-to-face with the country he’d been looking for. The other blond was smiling sympathetically, holding his hand out as an offer of help.
"Y-yeah, I’m fine," Canada replied, taking his hand. He stood and brushed himself off, gathering Kumajiro up again.
"Sometimes they don’t see countries like us," New Zealand sighed, shrugging, "Loud neighbors, y’know?"
He smiled again before his expression turned nervous. ”You…you know who I am, right?”
Canada mimicked the other’s earlier reassuring smiles. ”Ah, yes…you’re New Zealand.”
The answering grin told Canada he hadn’t really needed any icebreakers after all.
