OFF-SCREEN
Kate sighed, sticking her phone in her back pocket. Her friends could be so overprotective. Don't be mistaken, she loved them to death, they were always there for her through thick and thin, Kate would always be grateful to have people like them in her life. But they didn't understand the confusion she was in or how she was feeling at all. They thought telling Tom how she felt was the easiest thing to do on earth, but it wasn't to her. What about the embarrassment she would feel when he'd tell her how he was just joking every time he flirted with her, and they were just friends, nothing more? That the kiss meant absolutely nothing to him and had no affect on their friendship.
Although she had the best girl-friends in the whole entire world, did she want to risk losing one really special to her, guy-friend just because of a few feelings that wanted more between them and a kiss that technically, didn't count? Kate squeezed her eyes shut and massaged her temples, trying to ease the headache coming on from too many thoughts running through her mind.
It was 2:20. She had to be at the set at 2:45, and it was a 15 minute drive there. She packed up her purse with the necessities, and scratched under Lynx's chin a few times, then left her hotel room, locking the door behind her.
She felt her phone vibrate and paused for a moment to pull it out and check it.
New message from Matt 💗
Matt 💗: let me know when you're back in town so we can schedule that date
Her brows furrowed as she stared hard at the text. She didn't recall it being a date, just a friendly meet-up to give each other a chance to catchup on each other's lives. Tapping into the messages, she clicked on the empty box to reply.
katy cat: how about you come with me to the premiere for the movie instead?
The text box showed moving dots from Matt's awaiting response. Soon enough, he replied back,
Matt: sounds great. can't wait to see you then. xx
Kate read through the text, then turned her phone off, throwing it into her purse. Just as she was about to continue on her way to the set, when a door shut from another hotel stayer, and a voice called, "Katy!"
She turned her head too look back, recognizing the British accent almost immediately. Tom had a navy colored cap on top of his head and Tessa on a leash beside him. He jogged over to catch up to Kate, who flashed a warm smile at him. Tessa jumped in excitement, standing up on her hind legs she placed her paws on Kate's shoulders, sniffing and licking Kate's neck and face. "Oh, hey, Tessa." Kate grinned with a laugh, rubbing the dog's sleek grey coat of fur.
"Okay, come on now, Tess, leave Kate alone." Tom patted Tessa's back and she jumped off, finding a new interest in the floor as her nose hovered over the intricately designed carpet. Kate straightened out her shirt, and let out a breath, lips curled up into a smile. "I was just about to come over to your room," he told her, "wondered if you fancied a walk with Tess and I?"
Kate bit her lip, "Sorry, I can't. I have to re-film some stuff, I'm headed to the set now." She shrugged apologetically; duty calls.
Tom nodded his head in understanding, tugging on Tessa's leash to bring her back as she began to wander away from him. "Oh, that's all right. Maybe another time."
As they both headed towards the elevator, Kate ran a hand through her hair nervously. She hadn't anticipated running into Tom so soon, it felt too different between them after the kiss. At least it did for Katy. "I actually wanted to talk to you about something." Tom looked over at her and nodded, his full attention on her and his eyes trained on her face, which was clean of makeup so the makeup artists could start off on a clean base, it made Kate feel uncomfortable being so bare. "So, I'm sorry that I even asked you to be my date to the premiere in the first place, but, is there a way that I can cancel on you without you hating me forever?"
Tom chuckled, looking down at the ground with his hands shoved deep into his pockets. "Don't worry about it, Katy. It's no problem."
She gave him a tight-lipped smile, lifting her hand up to squeeze his arm in a friendly matter. "Thank you so much, Tom, you're a good guy." There was almost a pang in her chest from saying the words to him. Of course, she wanted nothing more than to go with him as his date and him as hers, but that would only bury her deeper and deeper into the feelings of affection she was beginning to feel for Tom. And that was the last thing she wanted to do, because it could ruin their friendship completely if things went bad.
"I actually wanted to tell you, too, that I forgot I promised to take Elle to the premiere, so..." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
Kate furrowed her brows in confusion, "Elle?" He never mentioned anyone named Elle before.
He nodded. "She's a really close friend of mine, since before I started getting into all these films. We've known each other forever. She's been really supportive, so I thought I should repay her somehow and, yeah."
Trying to put a smile on her face despite the pain she could almost feel in her heart, Kate forced the positive expression onto her face. "That's really great, Tom. Elle sounds like a really special person to you."
His eyes were practically glued to the floor as he replied slowly, "Yeah, she really is." The elevator bell rang, a short chime to indicate that they had reached the lobby floor. The two emerged out from the small space and began exited the building. There, a cab was waiting for Kate and Tom was just turning at the sidewalk towards the park for Tessa to run around in. "Bye, Kate." Tom waved to her.
Kate returned the gesture, and waved backed. "Bye, Tom." Then she got into the car, and they drove away.
