Chapter eleven
"Bye dad, thanks, see you in a year." I joked, waving at the retreating car and sighing. I was really tired. It had been a long day. I opened the front door and tossed my keys.
"Mum, I'm home." I screamed, pacing towards the living room. There was no one in there. I frowned, that was weird. I checked my watch. Mum was always home by four. And it was ten past four. I poked into the kitchen and spotted a pink Post-It stuck to the fridge. I snatched and read it mimicking while I opened the fridge and looked for some water.
" 'Honey I'm visiting Fred's parents. I know, I'm sorry, it was a last minute thing, but they're flying to Florida tomorrow. We'll be back by six. Love you, mum.' " I groaned as I poured some water into a glass and tossed the Post-It. I gulped the cold water and felt it run through my throat.
"God, it feels good." I sighed and put the glass down on the counter.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. I darted towards the foyer, not really expecting anyone. I opened the door and smiled, surprised to see Reed leaning charmingly against the doorframe.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked, scrutinizing his whole body. He did look great.
"Hey, I just wanted to see if you were okay." He shrugged, crossing his arms over his bulky chest.
"Yeah, I'm better. Wanna come in?" I held the door open for him, gesturing towards the inside.
"Sure." He said, entering the house. I closed the door and walked towards the sofa, feeling him following behind.
"I actually hanged out with my dad today." I commented as I flopped down on the couch. He sat down next to me.
"Really? I thought you didn't get along,"
"We do. It's just that we don't see each other that much." I smiled and leaned against the back of the sofa. Reed posed his arm next to me and eyed me carefully. I frowned.
"What are you looking at?" I asked chuckling.
"Nothing." He answered naively. I smiled and scrutinized his face. God, how I wished I could touch him. His skin was flawless, his eyes warm, his lips tempting.
"I actually wanted to apologize for everything."
I arched an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"I talked to Luke and-"
"Yeah, about that. I know. He mentioned that before saying he hated me and after saying I was dead to him. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he mentioned it." I said mockingly, seeing how his lips twitched into a smile.
"I'm sorry." He said, putting his hand on my arm.
"Hey, really, it's okay. Anyway, I had already mentioned it to him. He just didn't know with whom."
"Oh, great, now he's after me." He joked, rolling his gorgeous eyes.
I laughed and punched him in the shoulder. "Don't worry. Luke's not that kind of guy."
"What kind of guy?"
"A bully. He's just not that way. He won't hurt you."
"But he hurt you." His words were gentle, but I still felt my heart aching. There was a small silence, and I could see him regretting having said that.
"Yeah, but I'm over him. He's dead for me too, you know." We both grinned, and I felt like everything was okay. It felt perfect.
"Well, I broke up with Emma, too."
"You did?" I was really worried. I could imagine Emma alone, with the pregnancy thing.
Reed must have noticed my expression because he immediately explained things to me. "But, I told her that I was going to be there for her...with the pregnancy thing , you know. It's going to be tough. But she's a good friend, she deserves it."
"But, why did you break up then?"
"Well, we weren't 'meant for each other'. That's all." He shrugged and then smiled widely. I laughed and copied his smile.
He brushed my cheek with the back of his hand. I stared right into his eyes and melted. They were smiling. His eyes were smiling. He leaned forward and posed his lips only inches away from me. I could feel our breathings blending in. For once, I allowed myself to listen to my heart. I wrapped my arms around his neck and brushed my lips against his gently. It felt so nice. I had been holding myself back for so long. And now I could do it. Although Luke was still in the back of the mind.
I pulled away, ashamed of what I had done. I wasn't supposed to do that. My arms were still resting in his shoulders, and his hand was still in my cheek. Our smiles had faded. We both new it was wrong. But I couldn't help myself. He dragged his hand towards the back of my neck and pulled me towards him. Our lips crashed. I crawled nearer to him, my chest bumping against his. He slid his hands to my waist. Every touch was burning in my skin. I felt like staying that way forever. I opened my mouth and let him in. He kissed me so passionately. I couldn't pull away. This time was stronger than me. His lips brushed mine with such gentleness. I yearned for him with all my soul. I glued my mouth to his and enclosed his lips. Every movement was coordinated.
I parted my lips just inches. Our foreheads still touched.
"Do you think this is right?" I panted, swallowing hard.
His grip in my waist tightened. "It's what we feel, right?"
"No, Reed." I ripped my arms from him and covered my mouth, looking away. "Reed it's wrong."
"Tell me you don't want to kiss me." He dared, making me face him. "Come on, tell me."
"Think about Emma. She's pregnant. She loves you. If she saw this, she'd be so hurt."
"Don't you think about Luke?"
"Yes, I do but-"
"But you still kissed me." He said seriously, letting go of my waist.
"Yes, but it was a mistake." I stood up and crossed my arms over my chest, eyeing Reed carefully.
He stood up gracefully and walked towards me. "I'd better go." He said harshly, glaring at me and then darting towards the door.
I rolled my eyes and spun around. "Reed!" I yelled complainingly. He couldn't do that. He couldn't be mad. But he didn't listen. He opened the door and slammed it. I clenched my teeth and flopped down on the sofa again.
I let out a big sighed and lay back. It was all gone in a second. However, the kiss still burned in my lips. My heart ached just to think he was mad at me. I wanted to do it again. I wanted to feel his hands in my hips and his lips on mine again It was all I could think of.
Suddenly, my butt started vibrating. I rolled my eyes and managed to slid my phone out of the pocket.
"Hello?" I answered inanimately, taking the phone to my ear.
"Hey...it's Emma." A trembling voice said. I straightened myself and frowned at the phone.
"Hey Emma, what's up?"
"I know it's kind of weird, but I need you to do something for me, if it's not too much to ask."
"Sure." I said hesitantly. I couldn't figure out why Emma was calling.
"I need you to come with me to my first ultrasound." She quavered.
"Yeah, but um...isn't Damien going? Or Reed?"
"Reed said he had football practice." I shook my head. Reed was a liar. At least he didn't hurt her. "And I can't reach Damien. His phone is dead or something." Her voice was begging me. I figured she wouldn't want to go alone.
"Sure, I can go with you. And when's this thing?"
"Now. I can pick you up if you want."
"Yeah, that'd be cool. See you." I hanged up and stared at nothingness. What had I just said? I was going to go with Emma to her first ultrasound. What was I thinking? Camille was going to be so mad. I needed to talk to her.
I had started dialing Camille's number when I heard a knock on the door. I groaned and tossed the phone on a small table, standing up. I scudded towards the door and opened it. Damien was standing outside, a fake smile plastered on his face.
"Hey, sea lion, may I come in?" I rolled my eyes and pushed the door open, gesturing for him to come in. He walked in comfortably, looking around. I slammed the door and turned to face Damien.
"What do you want, Damien?"
"Well, I want lots of things..." He said mockingly, spinning around. I glared at him and he decided to shut up. "Okay, I want you to keep a little secret for me."
I frowned and immediately realized what he was talking about. "Look, I'm not going to publish it. But Camille's definitely going to find out."
He walked a few steps and stood in front of me. He grabbed my arms and bended his back to be at my same level. "No, she's not."
I rolled my eyes and shook his hands off. "Damien, you're kinda dating her, you know?"
"I know." He whined, following me as I paced around. "But...she'll break up with me if I tell her."
I stopped and whirled around, staring right into Damien's black, mischievous eyes. "Do you really like her, Damien? Cause you break her heart, and your little secret gets published." I said mockingly, pointing at him with my finger.
I knew he wasn't going to answer my question. He was not going to spill out his feelings or anything similar. But he surprised me. "I do like her, Marina. She's kind of the only girl I've ever liked. And if she finds out...she'll wipe me off her life." He said sadly.
I lifted my arm and rested my hand in his forehead, seeing if he had fever. "What's the matter?" He said, chuckling.
I dropped my hand and pulled my eyebrows tight together. "You don't seem sick."
He rolled his eyes and stared incredulously at me. "Really, Marina. I wasn't lying. I like Camille."
Suddenly, a I heard a loud horn. I rolled me eyes. Emma had arrived. I rushed towards the table and grabbed my phone. Damien crossed his arms over his chest and frowned at the door. "Where are you going?"
"Emma's getting her first ultrasound. She tried to call you but your phone was dead." I said, already heading for the door.
"May I go?" He blurted out, making me stop.
"Yeah, I guess so. You're the father." I shrugged and opened the door. Damien was frozen in place. He stared at the door blankly. I shook my head. "You coming Damien?"
He nodded nervously. "Yes." I scudded out the door, wondering how Damien was going to react.
