August 26, 1996.

Alex.

"Lex, wake up, time for school."

My eyes opened to see my younger sister looking down at me.

I sat up and rubbed my eyes.

"Okay, Less. Go on, get dressed."

She nodded and walked out of my room, giving me time to get ready. I immediately went to my drawer to pick out some dope clothes for today. It was my first day of tenth grade after all.

I put my Etta James CD in my player and turned it all the way up, stripping from my clothes and getting in the shower.

After twenty minutes of a hot shower, I brushed my wet curls out and put on my outfit; ripped jeans, a black tank top, and my favorite Wu-Tang Clan beanie.

I ran downstairs and sat at the table.

"Good morning Alexandria." My mom said, setting a plate stacked with pancakes in front of me.

I groaned and looked at her. "Mom, I told you it's just Alex now."

She smiled. "Sorry, my little thug girl." She pinched my cheek.

I rolled my eyes playfully and picked up my fork.

"Yes Stacey, I thought what Angie had on was so ugly too," my older sister Alisa chatted on her cell phone as she stepped down the stairs. "she's such a loser." She grabbed a piece of bacon and ate it.

Alisa was seventeen, and thought she was all that at times. She always thought she was better than us and picked on my younger sister and I just because of that.

"Good morning guys." My younger sister Alessia smiled, kissing my mom's cheek and hugging my neck.

Alessia was fourteen, and a shy introvert who loved to write. Unlike Alisa, Alessia was my half-sister (we have different fathers) but I loved her just the same. And to be honest, she was my favorite sister.

"Ready for your first year of high school, Less?" I asked, forking another piece of pancake into my mouth.

She shrugged and smiled a bit. "Kind of. But I'm scared."

"Don't be. We're in the same building, you'll be fine as long as I'm around."

She nodded. "Thanks, Alex."

"No problem." I replied.

By that time, Alisa was done talking to her stupid friend on the phone and eating with the rest of us.

"Alisa, drive your sisters to school today." Mom said to her.

"Can't," Alisa replied.

"And why not?" Mom raised an eyebrow.

"Because, they're not cool." Alisa chuckled. "Being seen with them will ruin my reputation."

Alessia looked down at her plate, and I threw daggers at Alisa in my mind.

Mom crossed her arms. "You don't talk about your sisters in that way. You're going to drive them to school."

"But—"

"End of the conversation."

I snickered at the look on Alisa's face. It was so priceless.

"Ugh, come on." She huffed, standing up and walking towards the door.

I rolled my eyes and Alessia and I kissed Mom goodbye.

"Bye, I love you guys. Have fun at school!" Mom smiled, waving at us.

Alessia and I waved back, while Alisa's stuck up ass continued to walk out the door.

I reached to open the passenger door, but Alisa locked it.

"Get in the back." She said, sliding her sunglasses on and getting in the driver's seat.

I kissed my teeth and opened the door, letting Alessia go first. I got in afterwards and shut the door, and Alisa started the engine.

The ride to school was agitating. Alisa honked her horn whenever she saw one of her bougie friends and talked to Stacey the entire time on her phone. But, we eventually got there.

Alisa killed the engine and got out of the car, grabbing her purse.

Less and I just looked at her.

Alisa turned around and slid her sunglasses down to the tip of her nose.

"Well, come on! What are you losers waiting for?"

I mumbled some choice words for Alisa under my breath and got out, with Alessia behind.

Alisa went a separate way while Alessia and I grabbed each other's hand and walked into the school.

I showed Less a small tour of the school before we went downstairs to the rotunda with all of the other students.

"Ahem, students? Settle down please..." Mr. Donahue, the principal said, speaking into the mic.

The students quieted down after a few minutes.

"Okay, first to begin with, welcome back former students and welcome freshman and new students. Are you guys excited for the new year?" Mr. Donahue said enthusiastically, grinning.

Everyone just looked at him.

He cleared his throat and pushed his tie up. "Guess not. Well, anyway, enjoy your first day. Everyone can find their schedules to the right of me at that booth and you'll be on your way." Mr. Donahue stepped down from the podium, waddling away.

Everyone went to the booth to get their schedules. Less and I followed.

"Uh, Alex?"

I came over to her with my schedule in my hand. "Yeah, Less?"

"Where's the schedules for the freshman?"

I laughed a little and went over to the freshman table and found her name; Alessia Augello.

I walked back over and gave it to her.

"Here."

"Thanks," she took it and looked around.

I smiled at her. "You're nervous, aren't you?"

She nodded. "Very."

I threw my arm around her shoulder and hugged her. "Don't worry. Now come on, let's go to our lockers."

We went upstairs and she hugged me goodbye after spotting her friend, while I proceeded to my locker.

"21436, 21437..." I kept looking at my schedule then back at the lockers looking for mine. I finally stopped at one and shrugged. "Guess it's this one." I looked at the combination for the lock and put it in. It didn't work. "Ugh." I tried again. Still didn't work.

"Excuse me?"

I looked up to see a girl with caramel colored skin and braces looking down at me.

"Can I help you?" I asked.

She laughed a little.

"This is my locker," the girl said, tucking a piece of her dark brown hair behind her ear.

I looked down at my schedule that read Locker 21441, then looked back at the locker that read 21440. Stupid Alex.

I blushed with embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I misread my paper." I moved towards the left to the right locker.

I thought she was going to say something like 'don't let it happen again loser' or 'whatever', but, she didn't. Instead, she smiled and waved it off.

"It's okay. Everyone makes mistakes." She put in her combination and opened her locker.

I glanced at her and smiled a little.

"What class do you have first?" I asked the mystery girl.

She looked at her schedule then back at me.

"History. You?"

"Same," I chuckled.

She laughed with me. "Could you show me where it is? I'm new here."

I grabbed my books and nodded. "Sure. Follow me."

I closed my locker after getting my correct books and headed upstairs, the girl behind me.

We got upstairs to the third floor and made a right to the second door, which was where our History class was held.

"Here we are," I told her.

"Thanks," she smiled.

"You're welcome." I replied. "Hey, I never got your name."

She looked at me. "Jules. What's yours?"

"Alex." I smiled.
