[ THE RISE: CHAPTER SIXTEEN ]

In the compound, Marcel checked on an unconscious Camille before turning to a scared looking Davina, "Did it work?"

"Marcel, I have no idea. I had to redirect the spell straight back to Esther because, Rhea and Ares.. Weren't there. Something is wrong."

As if on cue, Ares came running through the courtyard, his little sister in his arms, Kol hot on his tail.

Placing Rhea on the table, he tugged at his hair out of both frustration and desperation, Davina ran over to them, inspecting her friend— her blood ran cold when she realise, her friend had no pulse.

Kol, who hadn't said a word, looked distraught, this was one of the few times he really hadn't a clue what to do— he was pretty sure his heart was going to give out soon, for a life without Rhea, wasn't a life worth living.

"No, no, no. She can't be dead, you said this was a foolproof plan!" Davina shouted, looking to Kol for some sort of explanation.

"Esther had tied Rhea's life to the body she was in, God, we should've bloody known!" He shouted more to himself than anyone else, turning to the nearest wall, he let his anger fly, with a fist straight into the brick— not even flinching at the pain, for the emotional turmoil he was dealing with far outweighed that.

Klaus and Elijah soon returned, with Rebekah's body— in Klaus' arms, placing her inside the home, they rushed back into the courtyard.

"Is there anything you can do?" Klaus questioned Ares, who had been eerily quiet, simply staring at his sisters lifeless body.

"We should've known," he mumbled, "Esther said, 'should this body die, another will go down with it', we should have known!" He shouted the last four words, slamming his fist down on the table.

"Everyone get out of the way." The tone in Ares voice made everyone step back instantly.

"Whatever you're thinking of doing, channel us." Kol suggested— Ares shook his head.

"No. This isn't something either of you can help with, this can only be done by pure magic, that isn't beholden by nature— no balance."

"Ares, what do you mean, no balance?" Elijah questioned, this was the first time he had spoken up since being back, everyone was scared to speak; incase the older Monroe witch lost his temper. Elijah, as well as Klaus, was worried for both the siblings, once upon a time they were all extremely close. Although their most recent meetings hadn't been pleasant, they did care for the two.

"It's means, Elijah, I'm about to do something that a whole lot of covens are not going to like." Ares told him, "Now everyone, move back."

It was only seconds before Ares held his hands above his sisters body and started chanting— something nobody present had ever heard before, let alone could understand.

Davina, turned to Kol, "What on earth is this magic?" She whispered, Kol eyes were fixed on Rhea's body, his mind was screaming at her to move, to get up and slap him for not realising Esther's plan. Anything.

"Well, if I'm correct, Davina Claire. Ares has just tapped into old magic, meaning older than me— magic that only exists within Ares and Rhea's bloodline." Kol whispered back, eyes still fixed on the witch he was totally consumed by.

Marcel signalled for everyone to join him inside as Cami had just woken up, Kol and Davina, however, didn't move an inch.

He couldn't help the tsunami of guilt that engulfed him, maybe if he had returned to Esther earlier, he may have been able to figure out her plans and prevented this from happening— he also knew he should've never let Rhea be apart of the plan.

Ares' chanting was getting more and more aggressive, one could only imagine the sheer amount of power that was running through his body at that moment. Suddenly, the whole building started to shake, apart from the area in which the the Monroe siblings occupied.

The two Mikaelson brothers and Marcel came running into the courtyard, wondering what was causing the commotion.

"What in gods name is he doing?" Elijah questioned.

And as Ares' voice seemed to consume every crevice of the compound, he joined his hands together, before finally, lifting them up above his head, slamming them down onto Rhea's chest— and the shaking ceased.

At the same moment his hands touched her chest, the younger witch shot up, a huge gasp escaping her— looks of utter confusion spread across the onlookers.

Kol rushed over, putting his hands on either side of her face, "Don't you ever bloody do that to me again." He scattered kisses over every inch of her gave, her nose, forehead, temples, cheeks, you name it; Kol was consuming it with his touch.

"I was dead." She turned to her brother, "What did you do?"

"How about we focus on the fact that you're alive, love?" Klaus cut in, prompting the witch to violently turn to the hybrid.

"I've lost count of how many times I've nearly lost my life, because of you— so you have no place to say anything." She turned back to her brother, "Now I'm gonna ask you one more time, and you better answer me. What did you do?"

Sighing, he looked up at his sister, "I used that magic."

"Please tell me you're joking."

"What does he mean by that?" Marcel asked, his only concern being whether or not it would affect the city.

"That's none of your concern," Rhea told the vampire, taking a step toward her brother, she lowered her voice— even though it was pointless, being that there was vampires in the room, "Are you our of your damn mind? We made a promise, not to use that— think what would happen if people found out."

"I couldn't let you die, Rhe. I don't care what happens, or if people find out, you're alive. That's what matters."

"We're gonna talk about this, properly, but for now, you're lucky I love you, or I'd kick your ass."

"Will this resurrection have any unwanted side effects?" Elijah questioned, Ares shook his head.

"No, it shouldn't."

"Well what I'd like to know is how you just bought Rhea here, back from the dead, without any satanic rituals or killings?" Klaus cut in, practically demanding answers from the two.

"Look, Klaus. All that matters is that my sister, is alive— there's no catch, no offering for bringing her back, no upsetting the balance. Can you trust me when I say I know what I'm doing?" Klaus seemed to ponder it for a second before nodding.

"For what it's worth, I think I can say on behalf of all of us that, we're glad you're alive, love." Klaus said before leaving the courtyard, Marcel and Elijah following.

Davina took the chance to hug her friend, "You're never leaving my side again." Rhea laughed at her friend, but tightened the embrace, truly greatly for her friend.

"That could get awkward, I mean, if Kol and Rhea finally do the do, you don't wanna be next to them, do you?"

No one, even replied to the comment which— of course, came from the older Monroe.

But secretly, they were all glad that even at a time like this, Ares kept his sense of humour— without it, all of them would surely be in a state of panic over what happened that day.
