By the time I arrived in New York City, it was only eleven o'clock. This time difference and jet lag will definitely disrupt my sleep schedule, but since I was going to be here for a long time I knew I would get used to it.
I walked into the main lobby of the office building where my apartment would be and toward the reception desk, my suitcase trailing behind me.
"Hi," I smiled weakly, my arm growing tired of holding onto my bag and suitcase.
"Ah, you must be Emily," the woman grinned typing something on her computer and then opening a drawer, "We've been expecting you."
At first I wondered how she knew who I was. But then I remember that I wasn't from here, and my accent stuck out like a sore thumb. She must've been told that a confused British girl, named Emily Williams, would be arriving later this evening.
My eyebrows rose as I took the key from her, "Thank you."
I walked toward the elevator, and pressed nine waiting for it to bring me up. I anxiously made my way out of the elevator, both excitement and nervousness spread throughout my body; I honestly had no idea what to expect walking into my new home.
9-D
The key fit perfectly in its slot and I inhale slowly. Grabbing my suitcase from behind me, I open the door of my new apartment. I turn on the light by the door and look around. It's everything I dreamt it would be. I'm not sure why I was so worried.
I closed the door behind me as I enter the house. The living room extended into the kitchen with an island in the middle of the room with three white chairs. The windows on the back wall opened up to the city skyline giving me an amazing view. It had a welcoming atmosphere that practically made me feel as if this has been my home all my life. The room was definitely bigger than I expected, but I wasn't complaining.
I walked into the bedroom and saw a desk pressed against the window, just like it did in my room back home. Except when I looked outside, instead of seeing Harry's window, I saw nothing but bright lights ahead.
I felt like I was missing half of me, and the other part was miles away. Hell I was an entire ocean away.
I was completely alone.
I drop my backpack beside the chair and grabbed my phone out of my back pocket. Though I knew she was going to be asleep, I sent my mum a text anyways so she would be content with knowing that I'm safe.
I scrolled through my messages in hopes of seeing a text from Harry, but there was nothing. It's not like I was expecting one, but it would've been nice.
I look out once again at the bright lights. The sound of traffic on the streets outside and the soft raindrops on the window fill my ears. I let out a sigh as I continue telling myself that this was the right decision. I needed to move here. It was for the best. This was where I was supposed to be right now in my life.
"Emmie."
Out of complete and utter panic I grabbed the lamp from the desk firmly in my hand and turned around to face the intruder.
The man stepped back, his hands out in front of him. His green eyes alarmed and his lips pressed together in a thin line.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He took a breath and exhaled a lighthearted chuckle, "I didn't mean to scare you."
"Harry?" I breathed as he walked closer toward me. "What the hell?" I shouted in disbelief placing the lamp back on the desk.
"You know, you should probably keep your door locked at all times. You're living in a big city now, Em, this isn't Holmes Chapel anymore," he began walking over toward me a smirk growing on his face. "You never know who will come across your apartment, and easily walk in."
"You aren't real. This must be a dream." I tell myself, rubbing my face softly, "I'm still on the plane, I must've fallen asleep. I'll wake up any moment now." I assured myself squeezing my eyes shut.
I open them once again, only to meet Harry's gaze. I wanted to slap that smug look off of his face.
"This isn't a dream, Emmie." He chuckled and I frowned at him still confused. "I feel like now would be an appropriate time to tell a knock-knock joke, but I can't seem to think of one." Harry sulked furrowing his eyebrows as he scratched the back of his neck.
I rolled my eyes. Now I knew this was real.
"It is not the appropriate time for a knock-knock joke." I stammered pointing my finger firmly at him.
I was still quite bitter over we had left each other, and him showing up here only increased my anger.
"What are you doing here? How did you get here?"
"I wanted to see your new place," Harry shrugged innocently, holding his hands behind his back.
"I want the truth, Harry." I said sternly, not in the mood for his joking behavior. "Tell me the real reason why you're here." I demanded.
He exhaled walking closer toward me decreasing the space between us, "After you left I realized something, something I should've realized a long time ago."
"And what is that?" I inquired backing up into my desk.
"A really great friend of mine once told me, don't marry someone you can live with..." he smiled softly as my memory began to go back to the day I gave him this piece of advice, "Marry that one person you can't live without."
I gasped silently, my jaw opening slightly. My eyes became glossy and my breathing was unsteady. I nodded once for him to continue. I wanted to hear everything he had to say, everything that I have been waiting to hear.
"I can't live without you, Emily."
I gasped, the air getting caught in my lungs. My stomach tied in knots and I couldn't help but to smile faintly, "I can't live without you either." I confessed.
"I know. I hurt you. I wish I never did. I wish I could take it all back." He whispered, the pain in his voice evident.
I sighed looking down at his feet that continued to inch closer to my own.
"It was always you. You are the one I want to be with. I'm so sorry." He paused inhaling shakily. His eyebrows were furrowed together and his face was serious and full of thought as he continued speaking, "I'm sorry that I didn't tell you that I love you when I knew I did, and when I always will. And I don't care if you think it's too late, I'm telling you now anyway."
I gasped at his honesty. It was unexpected to say the least. I was completely speechless, my eyes blinking rapidly as I try to brush the tears away.
"I was blinded by the illusion I thought was real love, and I took you for granted. I broke promises too, promises that should've been kept. And there's nothing I can do to take that back but to apologize and pray that you forgive me." He took another breath and I could tell he was getting choked up too, "But I want my best friend back. Because I'm in love with her." He confessed smiling at me as the tears roll down my cheek. He slowly wipes away the hot liquid from my face.
"Happy or sad tears?" He chuckled.
"Happy." I nodded with assurance.
"We shouldn't have left like that." Harry whispered. His hand softly brushed a piece of hair out of my face as we still held our gaze.
"But you're here now." I told him looking on the brighter side of the once awful situation we were once in.
He softly cupped my cheek lifting my head up to meet his gaze. I knew what was going to happen as the butterflies erupted in my stomach.
Before either of us could make another sound, he leaned forward and brought my lips to his. Keeping his hand on my cheek, he took the other and wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me further into him.
At first my eyes were open, but once I felt his warm and surprising gentle and safe assuring arms, I close my eyes and pressed myself deeper into his chest. I could hear his heart beating fast. I could hear mine too. It was so loud as they beat at the same pace.
He pulled away but then rested his forehead on mine.
"I just kissed my best friend." He smiled.
"Yeah," I let out a small and short laugh. "It was kind of awkward wasn't it?"
"Maybe I should try again," he smiled leaning to press his lips to mine again. His hands securely place on my lower back pulling me close.
He rubbed my cheeks softly with his thumbs, pulling away to look into my eyes.
"I'm never letting you go, Emily. I hope you know that." He stated.
"Good," I smiled, "Because right here is where I want to be. It's where I want to stay."
His eyes lingered from mine, to my lips, and down to my neck.
"I like your necklace." He complimented and looked back up to me.
"Thank you." I smiled brightly at him, "Someone very special gave it to me."
"Must be some guy."
