FIVE YEARS LATER
"Shh, you're being too loud." Lily giggled, taking another sip from the bottle of wine before passing it back to Michael.
"I'm not being loud, you are!" Michael shook his head, letting a few giggles slip out of his own lips. He drank straight from the bottle, crinkling up his nose at the taste of the wine. He didn't get to choose what they were drinking, Lily did.
"No, I'm not." Lily whispered, laying back down on the bed again. She was able to keep a straight face for only a few seconds before she burst into laughter again.
"Stop!" Michael ordered, unable to stop himself from laughing. He set the bottle of wine down on the bedside table and then crawled across the bed until he was laying over Lily, holding himself up with his elbows.
"I'm not being loud." Lily whispered again, reaching out and poking Michael's nose.
"You're funny." Michael laughed, leaning down and kissing the tip of her nose. Lily hated that when she was sober but loved it when she was drunk.
"I love you." Lily bit back a smile, wrapping her legs around Michael's waist, pulling him even closer to her. She placed her hands on either side of Michael's face, pulling him down and bringing her lips to his.
"I love you too." Michael said when she pulled away, his words slurred. He couldn't remember why they'd decided to get drunk that night, sometimes they did that when they had nothing better to do, but Michael was glad that they had.
Michael kissed Lily again, not letting her pull away as quickly this time. He slipped his hands up Lily's shirt and finally pulled it off completely, tossing it onto the floor. They stayed like that for a few minutes, Michael's hands running all over Lily's body, until she finally pushed him away.
"I don't want to do this." She sighed, changing her mind completely.
"Why?" Michael asked, cocking his head to the side.
"I'm sad." Lily shrugged, as if this was something that Michael should already know.
"Why?" Michael repeated. He was in a pretty good mood at the moment, he didn't know why Lily was sad, he didn't want her to be sad.
"I don't know." Lily shrugged, biting down on her bottom lip. "Probably because Luke's getting married."
"Oh, yeah." Michael nodded, remembering why he and Lily had decided to get drunk that night.
Luke had proposed to Sam, his girlfriend of almost five years, earlier that day and ever since he came home and told them Lily had been in a weird mood. Michael knew why, of course, girls always got in weird moods when their friends or relatives started to get married, he just didn't know how to handle the situation.
"It's just, like, I'm 27 and you're 30...something, I don't even know, you're old - " Lily stammered. Michael wasn't sure if she was just struggling because she was drunk or because she really didn't know how old Michael was.
"I'm only 31." Michael informed her.
"Whatever. We're still not married and we still live in the apartment with my parents and my brother. And now Luke is getting married." Lily pouted, poking Michael in the chest. "I thought we were gonna get married first."
"Wanna?" Michael blurted out, not considering the fact that they were both drunk and he was literally proposing and they probably wouldn't even remember this conversation in the morning.
"What?" Lily asked, clearly caught off guard.
"We can get married too, if you want." Michael shrugged, still slurring his words while he spoke and still not thinking any of this through. "I love you so much and we already live together so, like, lets just get married."
"Do you really want to?" Lily questioned, giggling once more. She seemed pretty confused about this whole thing as well.
"Yeah." Michael nodded quickly. He was completely serious, he loved Lily more than anything in the world and he was sure that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
"Okay." Lily shrugged.
"Okay." Michael shrugged as well. If he had been sober he would've been crying, but since he was drunk and out of it he only felt, well, horny.
Lily must have felt the same way, because she pulled Michael towards her and kissed him again. She tried hard to keep their lips pressed against each other's as she unbuttoned Michael's jeans and struggled to get them down his legs.
"I can't do it." She whined, looking up at Michael and pouting again.
He giggled, sitting up to get his jeans off the rest of the way and to take off his own shirt. Michael leaned down again, bringing his lips to Lily's neck and sucking hard enough to leave a mark.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Michael mumbled against her neck, not exactly sure if he was asking Lily about them getting married or having sex.
"Yes." Lily nodded quickly.
Michael's hands moved to the waistband of the shorts Lily was wearing and began to slide them down her legs, leaving short kisses on the insides of her thighs while Lily ran her fingers through his hair.
Michael paused for a moment, realizing that he'd just asked Lily to marry him. They were actually going to do it, they were going to spend the rest of their lives together. His lips quickly found Lily's again, continuing what they'd started.
*•*•*
Michael was sitting on the bed, looking down at his laptop, while Lily paced around the room in front of him. It'd only been a month since they'd decided to get married but Lily was excited and wanted to get as much done in as little time as possible.
"We need to find a place to actually have the wedding. That's what we should be worrying about, not the centerpieces." Lily rambled on, waving her arms around as she spoke. "Also the guest list, we need to figure out how big this should be."
"I have, like, two friends." Michael spoke, not even looking up from his laptop. He was looking at apartments online, and Lily had been helping him until she got distracted once again with wedding plans. "Plus my parents. That makes four for my side of the family."
"I should start looking at dresses. I need a dress before I pick the venue. If I don't find a perfect dress then we're not getting married." Lily finally stopped pacing and climbed onto the bed again, sitting next to Michael. "Do you think Sam would come with me to pick one out? Oh my God, do you think Sam would be my maid of honor?"
"I don't know, why don't you ask her?" Michael asked with a blank time in his voice. He cared about the wedding plans, of course, he just had other things to think about as well.
"I think she would." Lily shrugged. "I just need help picking out a dress, because I'm definitely not letting you come with me."
"That's fine, I want to be surprised." Michael said, still looking down at his laptop. "Just make sure that you actually like it and won't end up wanting to return it right before the wedding."
"What are you looking at?" Lily asked, resting her head on Michael's shoulder.
"Apartments, still." Michael sighed.
"Oh, get that one." Lily said, pointing to a random apartment listed on the computer screen. "It says pets are allowed. That's good."
"It's also extremely expensive." Michael shook his head, repositioning himself so he had an arm wrapped around Lily's shoulders.
"So? I like it. It looks nice." Lily shrugged, and Michael wasn't at all surprised that Lily didn't care about the price of the apartment.
"It only has one bedroom." Michael pointed out, continuing to scroll through other options.
"Well why do we need two?" Lily questioned. "We only need one room. Unless you want to sleep in separate rooms, which is weird. Why would you want to do that? We can't have sex in separate rooms."
"Lily, we - " Michael stopped himself, shaking his head. "I don't want us to sleep in separate rooms."
"Then why would we need two?" Lily asked, still confused.
"I wanted an extra room to use as an office." Michael said quickly. He and Lily had discussed all of this before, but she'd probably had her mind on other things.
"Oh, right." Lily nodded slowly. She pointed to the screen again. "What about that one?"
"Uh, yeah." Michael said, looking over everything listed for that apartment. It looked nice, it seemed like it had everything they wanted. "We can go check that one out."
"Ugh, I don't want to go check it out." Lily pouted.
"We have to." Michael said and closed his laptop, knowing that he wasn't going to be getting anything done as long as Lily was sitting next to him.
"You can do it by yourself." Lily smiled, pushing Michael's laptop off to the side.
"Seriously?" Michael asked, unable to stop himself from smiling as well. "Okay, I'll go look at the apartment by myself, and if I like it I'll buy it and there's nothing you can do if you don't like it."
"Okay, fine, I'll go look at it with you." Lily said, rolling her eyes. "You're always right, I hate it."
"Thank you." Michasl nodded, happy that he'd finally gotten the answer that he wanted from Lily.
"I'm really excited." Lily said after a few minutes of them sitting in silence, looking up at Michael. "I didn't think I was going to be but the more I think about everything the more excited I get."
"Yeah, me too." Michael nodded, kissing Lily's forehead.
"We're going to move into our own place and get married and adopt 10 more dogs and everything's going to be perfect." Lily giggled, "Then maybe we can have, like, one kid."
"Sounds like a pretty good life." Michael nodded. "I'm excited too, I love you so much."
"I love you." Lily smiled, leaning up and kissing Michael on the lips. "I always will."
"Don't be gross." Michael said, crinkling up his nose.
"Shut up, I'm not being gross." Lily groaned, pushing Michael away from her. "I hate you."
"I hate you too, let's break up." Michael laughed. They did this at least three times a day.
"Okay." Lily shrugged.
"Okay, I get the dog." Michael said, moving a few inches away from Lily.
"No, I want the dog." Lily whined, her lips forming into a big pout. "Let's get back together!"
"Okay." Michael shrugged again, scooting closer to Lily and wrapping his arm around her waist.
After a second, Lily pushed Michael away again. "I'm bored, let's break up."
*•*•*
"Hey, are you alright?" Michael asked as Lily slowly walked into the room and over to the bed.
"Uh huh." She nodded, pulling up the covers and getting under them, wrapping her arms and legs around Michael and squeezing him tightly. Lily liked to do that, even though sometimes it annoyed Michael
"You sure?" Michael asked again, letting out a small laugh.
He wasn't asking about how she was just in that moment, he was asking how she was in general. For the last couple months Lily had acted very strange, she was either super happy or super sad, and Michael was starting to get worried. However, he knew that if he directly asked her what was going on she'd get mad.
"Yep." Lily looked up at him and smiled. "I'm just tired."
"That's understandable, it's pretty late." Michael shrugged, looking over to the clock on the bedside table. He began running his fingers up and down Lily's back, assuming that she was going to fall asleep pretty soon.
"Hey, Michael?" Lily said quietly, resting her chin on his chest so she was staring right at him.
"Yeah?" Michael asked, starting to feel very tired himself.
"I don't think that we should get that apartment." She whispered.
"Why? You don't want to move there anymore?" Michael questioned, not understanding what Lily meant.
They'd spent the last couple months searching for the perfect apartment of their own, and now that they'd found one Lily wanted to change her mind. Michael should have expected this, Lily rarely picked something and stuck with it.
"No, no, I still want to move." Lily assured him. "I just don't think we should move into that specific apartment."
"Why?" Michael asked, raising an eyebrow. He knew that there had to be a reason for this.
"I don't know, I just think that maybe we should move into a house or something." Lily said innocently, resting her head on Michael's chest again so she was no longer making eye contact with him. "Somewhere outside of the city, but like, not that far away."
"Why?" Michael repeated, knowing that he was going to have to continue repeating himself until he got Lily to answer him.
"Because we'll need more room." Lily said softly. She traced patterns on his chest with her fingers, and Michael knew that she was trying to distract him, but it wasn't working this time.
"Why, Lily?" Michael asked again, starting to get frustrated.
"Because I'm pregnant." She said nonchalantly. "So instead of turning the second room in the apartment into an office for you we'll have to make it the baby's room, unless we want to have the baby sleep in the room with us, but it would make more sense for us to just buy a house so we can have both. We're probably going to end up moving into a house at some point anyway, so it's like we're just getting a head start - "
"You're what?" Michael yelled, sitting up quickly.
"I'm pregnant, Michael." Lily said slowly, caught off guard from Michael sitting up so fast.
"I heard you the first time." Michael snapped. He didn't mean to be rude, he was just so surprised, he didn't see this coming at all and he was freaking out.
"Then why did you ask - ?"
"Lily." Michael stopped her and grabbed Lily by the shoulders, forcing her to actually look at him. "Are you serious?"
"Michael, I wouldn't lie to you about something like this." Lily rolled her eyes.
"Please don't joke around with me right now, babe." Michael begged, his eyes beginning to fill with tears. If Lily was really pregnant then he was going to have a baby, Michael was going to be a father.
"I'm not joking." Lily bit down on her bottom lip, and Michael could see that she was also fighting back tears.
"Are we really having a baby?" Michael asked.
"Well that's what the tests said, and the doctor, and the Internet - "
"Lily." Michael sighed, stopping her again.
"Yeah, we're having a baby." Lily nodded, and then burst into tears.
"Aw, babe." Michael smiled, pulling Lily into his arms and holding her close while she cried. "It's okay, you don't need to cry."
"I can barely take care of myself, how am I going to take care of a baby?" Lily sobbed. "I'm not ready for this, I thought that maybe we'd have kids one day but not this soon."
"You're going to be okay, you won't have to take care of the baby all by yourself." Michael assured her. He wanted to cry too, he was so happy, but he felt like now wasn't the time. That would only make Lily cry even more. "I'm gonna be right here, I'm gonna take care of the baby too."
"I've known for such a long time, too. Like, a month maybe." Lily sniffed. "I didn't know how to tell you, I was scared that you'd be mad at me. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, babe, I'm not mad at you at all. I'm not mad at you, Lily, I promise." Michael said, finally giving in and letting a few tears fall from his eyes. "I'm so fucking happy."
"Are you really?" Lily asked, looking up at him.
"Yeah, I am." Michael nodded. He let go of Lily for a moment so he could wipe his eyes, only to start crying even more.
"You don't need to cry too!" Lily hugged Michael this time, trying to comfort him.
"I can't help it, I get emotional when I'm happy!" Michael said through the tears, wrapping his arms around Lily again. "I just can't believe we're going to have a baby."
"I can't believe it either." Lily sniffed, pushing some of her hair away from her eyes. "Do you promise you're not mad? I really don't want you to be mad at me for this."
"Lily, come on, why would I be mad?" Michael asked, pulling away from her and rubbing his eyes. "You know I've always wanted kids, we've just been so busy with planning to move that we haven't gotten around to trying yet. I'm happy, Lily, I really am."
"I love you." Lily said, a new wave of sobs coming over her. Michael nodded and grabbed Lily again, pulling her onto his lap.
"I love you too." Michael was trying hard not to start crying again, but it really wasn't working. He kissed Lily's neck and they just sat there for a few minutes, holding each other and crying.
After a while there was a knock on the door, and Luke didn't wait for anyone to respond before he opened it and walked into the room.
"Oh my God, is everything okay?" He asked, sounding shocked.
Michael and Lily pulled away from each other, looking up at Luke. He was standing at the foot of the bed with a concerned look on his face, which made perfect sense, any good brother would be concerned to find his little sister and her boyfriend crying at one in the morning.
"We're fine." Lily said quickly, wiping her eyes.
"Lily." Michael whispered, not sure if she was planning on telling Luke right then or not.
"Sam and I could hear you guys from our room, what's going on?" Luke asked.
"Nothing, Luke, we're fine." Lily assured him. She stared up at Michael, and he could tell just from the look in her eyes that she wanted to keep this a secret for now.
"I told her this funny story, about something Ashton and I did in college, and we laughed so hard that we started crying." Michael said, hoping that Luke would believe him. He wasn't always very bright, so Michael wasn't too worried.
"Really?" Luke questioned, scratching the back of his neck. "You sounded upset."
"No, Luke, we were laughing." Lily insisted. She crawled off of Michael's lap and sat next to him in the bed again.
"Oh, well, okay then." Luke nodded slowly. "I just wanted to check on you guys. I'll stop bothering you now, sorry."
"It's no big deal, Luke." Michael smiled at him, even though he really wanted to start crying again. He just couldn't believe he was actually going to be a father. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Luke sighed and turned around, walking out of the room and shutting the door behind him again.
Lily and Michael turned towards each other again, neither of them saying anything.
"So..." Michael trailed off. He was done crying now and trying to process all of this. "What now?"
"What do you mean?" Lily asked, wiping under her eyes on final time to get rid of any evidence that she had been crying.
"I'm just trying to think, I wasn't really expecting this." Michael said quietly. "I'm happy, I just wasn't expecting this."
"Yeah, I understand." Lily nodded. She paused for a second, like she was deep in thought. "I think we should call off the wedding."
Michael looked up, a puzzled look on his face.
"Just for a little while." Lily quickly explained, "I just really don't want to get married while I'm pregnant. I think we should wait until after the baby's born."
"Okay, okay, that's fine." Michael nodded, realizing that it made more sense for them to do it this way. They loved each other and were going to raise this baby together, being legally married wasn't going to change anything. "So, you want to move into a house?"
"Yeah." Lily laughed, she'd already said all of this. "I mean, I just think it makes more sense. We're probably going to have more kids in the future so at some point we'll need to move into a bigger house."
"More kids?" Michael questioned, his eyes wide.
"Yeah, more kids." Lily shrugged, like it was totally obvious. "You've always wanted a big family because you're an only child, so obviously we're going to have a lot of kids."
"Okay." Michael nodded quickly, not sure how he was supposed to act about this. They'd been dating for about six years, it wasn't like they were moving too fast, everything was just happening all at once.
"I should have come up with a better way to tell you." Lily sighed, biting down on her bottom lip. "I could have done something really creative and cute that I could have posted on Instagram but I was scared so I just blurted it out so casually and - "
"Lily." Michael cut her off, kissing her on the lips. "I love you so much. I'm happy and I'm so excited. Now let's go to sleep, it's late and I feel like I'm going to cry again."
"Okay." Lily said, laying down and resting her head on Michael's chest. "I love you."
"I love you too." Michael smiled widely, kissing her forehead. "Goodnight."
