Chapter Two – “Look Alive, Sunshine”

Despite the autumn weather, the windows of our apartment were wide open the following afternoon, letting in a light breeze. Thanks to Mona’s parents we didn’t have to live in a dorm room, or go through the horrific experience of going through rush.

In fact thanks to Mona’s parents I didn’t have to pay for my college experience at all. Her family gave me the most amazing 18th birthday present in the whole entire world. A college education. But sometime I stopped to wonder whether it was for my benefit, or because Mona wanted me to go have the college experience right alongside her. Either way, I didn’t really mind. Mona was after all pretty much my sister, except closer. I didn’t really have to work to have enough money to live on. Mona’s dad had an account set up just for us to use any time we wanted.  But I liked to know that I was contributing something to it. And working at the bar wasn’t too gruelling.

A row of pizza boxes lined the small glass coffee table that stood in our tiny apartment living room. I had called an emergency club meeting right after we fixed up Salina’s make up. Cheered her up with a bowl of warm paste and dropped her off at her dorm room, telling her to meet us in our apartment the next afternoon. We didn’t really talk about the break or our planning. She was far to distort for that. Salina wasn’t there yet; but we sat in a cycle with our official club members.

The broken hearts club started during the summer right after our senior year of high school. I didn’t come up with the name. Mona did. She thought it was poetic.

You see, I had my heart broken, badly, by a douche bag at our school. For weeks I walked around like a zombie. I felt horrible. Like I was the ugliest most disgusting creature in the world. Then one day, burst into my room and demanded I stop feeling sorry for myself. Of course this was right after I cancelled on coming to her birthday party. She was there within 2 minutes of me hung up the phone to tell her I wasn’t in the partying mood. Our houses where about 5 minutes from each other.

She couldn’t take no for an answer. She demanded that I tell her how I feel that instance and that I ‘stop acting like that freaking emo girl in those dumb vampire books after her emo boyfriend leaves her’. She said I was so much better than that.

And she was right. At that moment I felt better. I stopped blame the guy acting like a douche bag on myself and got angry at him instead. There was something wrong with him not me. And I felt like a needed to do something. To hurt him somehow to make it better. To show him you can’t do what he did to people.

And that’s when Mona suggested it. We do hurt him like he hurt me. We break his heart. I thought she was crazy and that she watched too many teen movies…but Mona has a way of making you agree with her point of view. So then we hatched up a plan. We would get Mona to make him fall in love with her. We would find out everything about him. The type of girl he liked. His interests. We would make her the perfect girl for him…we even went for hair as to dye her hair black because we heard somewhere that he liked girls with dark hair.

Oh boy did it work. He was in love with her. The poor guy couldn’t control himself around her. Then when he was completely and utterly head over heels, we ripped it out right from under him. Making sure we did it as publicly as possible.  Sure it seems harsh. But I can’t say he didn’t deserve it.

After that it just kind of kept growing. First we got back at the guy who stole Mona’s car and left her at the biker bar. Then, once we got to College we started with our friend’s horrible ex-boyfriends. Gradually the circle got bigger and bigger, advertising by word of mouth, only of course.  Guys didn’t know that all their broken hearts happened because of an underground feminist organisation.

“You’re insane!” Toby proclaimed in her strong Canadian accent. Toby had become a member of the club because we need a new girl to use as the subject. She was beautiful with pale skin and incurably curly blonde hair; but she didn’t know it. “This is Jayden Keith we’re taking about. He’s a unicorn!”

“A what?” Mona looked up from her the game that Dott, another member of the club, was teaching her to play on her Gameboy.

“A unicorn? As in he’s a virgin?” I asked.

“No,” Toby clicked her tongue in an irritated manner. “Don’t you guys know anything? A unicorn means he’s a beautiful to look at, but there’s no way in hell you’ll end up with him because his feelings are imaginary,” she explained.

“You realise that metaphor makes no sense, right?” I giggled.

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that it’s true. Boys like that have no feelings to begin with. It will be impossible to make him fall in love with anyone!”

“Oh come on, Toby. Don’t be like that.” Mona said. “I for one believe in Verra’s idea.” She looked over and smiled at me.

“Thanks bubbles,” I smiled back. “And I know it seems impossible, but we’re been doing this so long that we’re probably the best at what we do. I pretty sure we can take on a unicorn like Jayden.” At that moment the door bell sounded. “That’s Salina. Now I don’t want to hear any more doubt from anyone, okay? We have to make her believe in us. Make her see that we’re here for her…even if the task at hand might be a bit challenging. Okay?” I looked around at every one waiting for some kind of acknowledgement.

“Fine,” Toby was the first to speak.

Dott only nodded. She didn’t speak much. She was a bit nerdy, but didn’t look it. She looked more like a child; with mousy blonde hair, big blue eyes and cupids bow lips. She often reminded me of a cherub.

I looked over at Mona. Her expression changed to a little insulted. “Dah,” she said. “I’ve always got your back.”  I nodded back at her with a smile then went to open the door.

Salina stood there with a shy smile. She was wearing a flowery summer dress that she matched with a soft sky blue cardigan. I felt a spasm of jealousy go through me. She looked pretty. She was tall, skinny, and delicate and could be a ballerina if she wanted to.  I felt a little embarrassed for my jeans and fanboy tee-shirt.

“Hi,” she said shyly.

“Hey, come in. You’re just in time. We were just about to start planning.” I stood aside letting her in.

“We?” she asked self-consciously.

“Yeah. Toby and Dott are here too. Come on.” I walked over into the lounge, and she followed.

“Guess who’s here,” I called out as I walked in.

“Gerard Way?!” Mona called back excited, but a think note of sarcasm in her voice.

“I’d like to introduce you all to Salina!” I said ignoring Mona’s comment. “Salina. This is Toby and Dott. And you know Mona,”

“You’re in my human biology lecture, right?” Salina asked Dott. Dott simply nodded as a response.

“Great! You know each other. Now let’s get to work.” I walked down and sat down at the table. Salina still stood awkwardly in the door way. “Come on sit down. You hungry? We have tons of pizza.”

Salina nodded sheepishly and moved to sit on the floor me, grabbing a slice of pepperoni pizza.

“Okay, Dott. You want to take notes?” Mona asked looking over at Dott. Dott simply took out a piece of clean white paper and a black from under the table. “Right, Mona clapped her hand together. What do we know about Jayden Keith?

The room went silent. Awesome. This is going to be harder then I thought.

After a few minutes Salina finally spoke. “What is it exactly,” she looked at me while she spoke. “That we are planning to do to him.”

“That’s easy,” Mona scoffed. “We destroy him.” She said the word like it was a sharp knife she was planning to put through his chest.

“What she means is,” I quickly injected. “We break his heart. Do to him, what he’s done to other girls.”

“And how are you planning to do that?”

“We make him fall in love,” I answered a little confused.

“Ha!” Salina laughed with no humour in her voice. “Jayden Keith doesn’t do love.”

“Well then lucky for you, you’ve got us,” Mona said to her. An edge of pride in her voice.

“And you’ve done this before?” Salina asked hopefully.

We all looked at each other as a silent minute passed. Then finally toby smiled and said, “You wouldn’t even believe how much we’ve done this.”

“Okay. The fact stuff about him we can always find out later,” Salina said slowly. “Because let’s be honest, I don’t know anything about…even though, supposable, we were ‘going out’” she did speech marks in the air as she said the words. “For 3 months. But who exactly is going be the one her falls in love with.”

“Verra,” Mona, Toby and even Dott said at the same time. Without even giving it thought.

I froze. Looking around them all. Awesome….

“Okay, guys. I know this was my idea and all…But why me?” I said calmly.

“Well. Because for one, this was your idea,” Mona began. “And two, THIS WAS YOUR IDEA!” She shouted.

“Okay. Chill I get it.” I sighed. “Fine, I guess I’ll take one for the team,”

“Okay. That’s one thing done.” Said Mona. “Next where do we start our plan of attack?”

“Our what?” asked Salina.

“Where do we get him to notice our bait? Make a first impression? You see, it has to be memorable. Something that will make him notice,” Toby explained.

“Oh that’s easy. There’s a Trance party at his frat this Saturday,” stated Salina.

“A what, sorry?” I asked. Everyone looked a Salina as if she was speaking a different language.

“It’s when they hire out U.V light, listen to dub step and techno and get really stoned.

“And this is the future of the world we’re talking about. Society is so screwed.” Comment Mona. “Well then we have to find out as much as we can before Saturday. And then we attack. You ready for this, Vee?” Mona turned and looked at me.

“Of course,” I smiled back.

No. No I wasn’t.
