Chapter 11
ENJOY!!!!
Lindsey POV
I drove back to Jaycees' house after leaving the mall. I walked in to
found her asleep on the couch. I didn't want to wake her so I snuck
upstairs quietly. I threw the bags in the corner and went to lie
down on the bed. I found myself staring at the periwinkle blue walls,
thinking about Gavin and why he took off. I mean, I'm the one who
he attacked. My thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Hey, I didn't hear you come in." She said as she walked in and sat
on the bed beside me.
"Oh hey, I didn't want to wake you. How was your day with
Terrance?" I asked sitting up and smiling at her.
"When did you see him here?" She asked looking embarrassed.
"I saw him when I was walking back from the gazebo. I didn't come
in; I went to the mall instead." I said seeing that she had thought I
had walked in on them again.
"What were you doing back there. You know it's been a lot of dead
animals showing up back there lately, I heard. I haven't been back there in like seven years." She said.
"I went there to clear my mind; you know it is still beautiful back
there, but I think you are right it might not be safe to go by
myself." I said realizing that she was more right than she knew.
"I hate to ask but do you think I can stay a few more days. Alexis
and I aren't exactly on the same page right now." I said
remembering the argument that I had with Alexis. I then told
Jaycee about it.
"It doesn't even surprise me that she did something stupid like that. Your cousin is so desperate; I bet if he told her the truth she would
stay with him. Its cool if you stay for a few more days." She said
getting up and walking towards the door.
The next morning, I jumped out of bed, took a quick shower, threw
on my long sleeve blue shirt, a pair of black pants, and a black coat
and ran downstairs. I was determined to meet Gavin today no
matter what. Luckily for me Jaycee was already gone, so I didn't
have to wait for her. I left for school earlier than usual; so that I
could catch him before class. Unfortunately, he didn't show up to
school again. I had planned for this to happen; so after my first
class, I went to the front office to get his address. I walked into the
office and was greeted by Mrs. Hurst the schools receptionist. She
was a small stocky woman, who wore her hair in the cliché secretary
bun with a pair of black thick rimmed plastic glasses; which made her
eyes look two times smaller on her round chubby face.
"Good morning, how may I help you today?" She said in a nasally
cheerful voice.
"I wanted to know, if I would be able to get the address of a
student?" I asked as sweetly as I could.
"May I ask the reason why?" She said peering over the top of her
glasses.
"I found some things he left at school and I wanted to return them
to him." I said.
"Well, I'm not able to give out student's information, but you could
leave it here in the office and I'll return it to them. She said with a
semi-serious tone.
"Umm, well it is kind of personal and I wanted to make sure it got
back to him in person. I don't want it to end up in the wrong
hands." I said hoping she would fall for it.
"Well, I can give you the classes that he has scheduled, but I'm not
allowed to give out the address. What is the student's name?" She
said in a flat voice.
"Gavin Starke" I replied happily.
"Theses girls these days, always chasing after a boy." She thought
as she pulled up the schedule on the screen; luckily I was able to
see his address from her mind as she looked at the screen. It felt
really familiar, when I thought about it. She printed the three classes
that he had and handed it to me.
"Thank you." I said taking the paper and smiling. I walked to my car
and that's when I realized why it felt so familiar. The address was at
the same complex that I was going to rent from. I think I am going
to have to reconsider moving into that apartment I thought while
driving to the complex.
I pulled into the apartment parking lot. A familiar feeling washed
over me, making me feel uneasy and kind of scared. I walked to the
door and stood there; at this point I didn't have anything planned. I
didn't know what I was going to say to him; it took everything I had
to knock on the door. I knocked and stood there full of anticipation.
I stood there for about two minutes and no one came, I was about
to leave when the door opened.
The door opened, but it wasn't Gavin standing there. The boy who
opened the door had green eyes lighter than mine and dark hair
similar to Gavin's. He looked just like him, except he had a
malevolent glow to him.
"Can I help you?" He said in a soft voice as he stared at me as if he
was puzzled.
"Y-Yes umm, I was looking for Gavin Starke; does he live here?" I
asked speaking low, but loud enough to hear.
"Yes, he lives here. He's not here right now but I know he won't be
gone that long; Please come in." He said gesturing for me to come
in.
I felt I couldn't say no, so I walked into the apartment. The
apartment looked the same size as the one I picked out, except this
one was covered in leather couches and black drapes. It had red
rugs on the floor and different pictures on the tan walls. He showed
me to the living room and I took a seat on the big leather sofa.
"Would you like something to drink?" He asked before going into the
kitchen.
"No, I'm fine." I said fidgeting with the trim of my shirt. He came
back into the living room and sat in the recliner on the side of the
sofa. Soon it became an awkward silence.
"I'm Lindsey, by the way. What's your name" I said smiling at him.
"I'm Travis." He said staring at me with curious eyes. I tried to read
his mind to see what he was thinking, I found that like Gavin's his
was murky and fast. I kept picking up thoughts of surprise,
anticipation, anger. I could also sense that he wanted something,
but I couldn't make any sense of it so I let it go.
"How you know my brother?" He said taking a sip of a soda.
"I go to school with him. Were good friends." I said shifting
nervously on the sofa where I sat.
"Oh, what brings you by?" He asked.
"I needed to talk to him since he didn't come to school." I said.
"Oh well I know he had to run some errands this morning and he
should be back soon. So you just skipped school today, to come see
him. Won't your parents be mad?" He said as if he was eager to
hear my answer.
"Oh, I don't live with my parents. I live with my cousin and she could
care less if I skipped. I said smiling.
"Oh did something happen to your parents?" He asked as I stared at
him and wondered why he wanted to know such personal
information. For some reason I felt the urge to tell him.
"My dad died a long time ago and my mom doesn't live around
here." I said looking in his eyes; which had strangely turned to a
darker green within the time I was talking to him. I couldn't take my
eyes off of him.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your dad, but you are lucky to still have
your mom. You get to see her still don't you?" He said in a soothing
voice as he stood up from the recliner and sat on the sofa beside
me.
"No, I haven't seen her in a long time. I will soon though." I said
smiling at that thought and wondering why I was still telling him this,
but I couldn't stop myself from talking. He slid closer to me on the
couch; he was close enough to touch me. As soon as I looked at
him, I felt that I was getting really drowsy.
"Does she stay far?" He continued to ask as he moved closer to me.
My eyes began to flutter as I tried to keep them open. I felt my
heart start to beat faster and my breathing slowed down. My mind
felt as if something was trying to stop me from doing what it
wanted too. All I could do was continue to answer his questions;
which at this point I didn't want too. I wanted to move but the
harder I tried the drowsier I became.
Gavin POV
I was too tired to go to school today. I had spent all night looking
for food and unfortunately there aren't a lot of animals around Pine
city, Minnesota during this time of the year. So I had to settle for
two girls who had passed out in the park. They were lucky I wasn't
too hungry or they would have been in serious trouble, I thought as
I walked to my apartment. All I wanted to do now was take a hot
shower and slide into bed. I opened the apartment door and my
heart nearly fell out of my chest, or it felt like it did. There sat
Lindsey sitting on my couch with my brother; she was the last
person I would have expected to see today in my apartment. I
found myself staring at her, but she hadn't noticed I had come in.
She just stared at my brother; she looked as if she was almost
asleep. The shock I had quickly turned into worried as I looked at
her. Her face was as white as a sheet of paper, I then realized why.
My eyes fell to Travis sitting in front of her; I walked closer and
realized he was putting her in a trance.
"Travis, what are you doing?" I asked too shocked to do anything.
He stood up breaking the trance and turned to face me. He looked
as if he was a child who had just been caught doing something
wrong.
"What the Hell Travis, you can't be doing that." I said worried.
"I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me, we were talking and it
just happened." He said apologetically. I looked at him and then
back to her. She seemed to almost be out of the trance. She shook
her head, as if she had no idea where she was. She looked over
towards us and jumped up off of the couch.
"I'm sorry man, I slipped up." He said looking as if he was about to
cry.
"Don't worry about it, I'll fix it. Okay?" I said as she came closer to us.
"We need to talk. Alone." She said looking at my brother with a
confused and angry expression on her face.
"Oh, okay I'm going out I'll be back soon." Travis said as he grabbed
his coat and went out the door.
