I ran and ran. I needed to get away from the pain that threatened to rip me apart. I refused to let myself cry. I ran towards a large cliff. The closer I got to the edge, the faster and harder my heart beat. I felt like I was going to fall apart into little crumbs unless I pushed myself faster.
Finally, My legs reached the the edge of the cliff and I pushed. I let myself freefall for a couple seconds. Feeling the wind push my hair up. I opened my eyes and inhaled as the feathers sprouted. my bones cracked and shrunk, my lips hardned and enlongated, my legs were now small bones and I was flying in a matter of seconds. I spread my wings and gasped as the wind stopped my freefall.
I was a hawk. I beat my wings, paying attention to every little detail. I wanted to go higher. I climbed as I beat my wings faster. I needed to get away. I couldn't let myself think. I let my animal side take over. My hawk scanned the trees for food. I spotted a flash of little white fur and my hawk dived. I pulled my wings in tight and kept my body stiff. My talons came forward and my wings unfurled as i snatched the little white rabit trying to get away. I landed on a little shelf on the side of the cliff and savored my meal. I cleaned my beak and looked over the side. There was a small lake at the bottom.
I dived again. Durring the fall, I felt my feathers harden into scales, my tale and wings become fins and my beak dissapear. I hit the water clean. Not even a spash. I swam to the bottom of the lake and took a deep breath, letting the water fill me up. I swam for a while, enjoying the cool water on my scales. I swam around the top of the lake. As I came closer to the edge, I shifted again. My favorite animal. A cheetah. My bones cracked and grew one more time. I saw the spots appear as I let the water water be expelled. I ran as soon as all four legs hit the ground. I ran till my heart threatened to pop out of my chest.
I turned towards the house and ran. I was still miles from it. I still refused to think. I didn't want to face reality of the situation. When I reached the bottom of the hill, I shifted back to human form and collapsed against a tree. I brought my knees up and let my breathing slow. a single tear ran down my cheek. I quickly wiped it away as I grabbed the bag of clothes hidden in the tree I was leaning on. For some reason, when you shift, your clothes turn to shreads. I walked up to my house to find my puffy-eyed mother sitting on the porch. She looked down at the bag in my hands then up into my eyes. All she showed in hers was hurt.
She looked down at her hands in her lap.
"Put some clothes on, honey." she looked into my eyes again "We need to talk."
