= Aaron =
"What the hell?" Aaron muttered, looking incredulously at the phone screen, reading again the text message he just received from an unknown number.
'That's the most fucked up day. First I got a parking ticket, my proposal at work had been refused, I spilled my coffee on my favorite shirt, AND I just find out my ex-boyfriend got a NEW lover. Guess that proves my theory. So, are we still up for tomorrow's game?'
Aaron let out a bitter laugh. Yeah, he could beat her day, whoever this was. He took a sip from the bottle of whiskey in front of him and started to think about his 'day' which started at three o'clock in the morning. He'd come home after fourteen hours shift to find out that his wife is missing, and her phone was off. Worried that something happened, he called every one of her friends, even his parents. Nobody knew where Carrie was. After two hours and eleven messages to her voice mail, Aaron grabbed the phone to call the police when she opened the door. With a big smile on her face that disappeared at the sight of him, she dropped the most annoying four words.
"We need to talk."
"Where the hell have you been?" Aaron snapped. Now that she was in front of him safe and sound, his worry turned from relief into angry. Carrie dropped her handbag on the sofa with a sigh. She looked annoyed like his question was somehow ridiculous.
"Out"
"Out? You were out? Is this all you have to say? Do you have any idea how worried I was? I was losing my freaking mind here!" Aaron couldn't believe the answer he got.
"Aaron, there is no easy way to say this, so I'll tell you directly" She took a deep breath, raised her eyes to meet his and said with a sharp tone "I want to divorce."
"I called my par... What?" He couldn't be hearing right. She didn't say the 'D' word. Did she? "You want what?" Was she joking?
"Divorce" She took her four-inch heels off and dropped her ass on the couch. "I can't do this anymore Aaron" She can't do what anymore? Ok, they had arguments and things haven't always been rosy, but this? She never said anything about a freaking divorce. Aaron was stunned.
"You can't do what anymore Carrie?" She started motioning with her hand between them.
"This! Us! This marriage! I'm tired Aaron; I want more! I need and deserve more!" He didn't know what to say, hell; he didn't even understand. Tired of what? She didn't work. He never told her or even implied that she needs to stay home and be a housewife. Carrie knew that she had his support if she decided to do something. She doesn't need to worry about finances neither. They aren't rich that's true, but they don't miss anything. Her only hobby was to gossip with her friends. What more Aaron possibly could do? He didn't cheat her, he wasn't a drunkard, never hurt her, and he always treated her nice. He worked in two places for God sake so she won't be missing anything. What fucking more, his liver?
"Carrie, I don't know what's happening, but whatever is, we can fix it! But divorce? Carrie, you can't be serious. You know I love you." Aaron did love her. Their sex life was good so that couldn't be the problem. He said to fix, but he had no idea what to fix "Carrie, honey, we... I can..." Aaron was speechless. He truly didn't expect this. "Carrie, what's wrong?"
"Don't, Aaron, don't look at me like that. There is nothing to fix! Carrie stood up and took off her wedding ring, holding his hand she placed the ring in his palm. "Just stop, don't make me say things that will hurt you" Hurt him? Yeah, too late for that.
"Carrie... Please!" He reached for her, but she dodged his hand and took two steps back. "I don't know what I did, but... Please, Carrie, we love each other"
"You didn't do anything Aaron, I know you love me" She sighed, avoiding too look at him. Aaron didn't miss the fact that Carrie didn't say she loves him as well.
"Then why, Carrie? Tell me!" He shouted.
"I've met someone else!" Carrie shouted back. Wait, what? The word 'someone else' echoed in his mind. No, No, he trusted her. He rubbed his chest attempting to ease the pain, seeking for her eyes, looking for the truth. And there it was, bright like the sky. Oh, My God, it was right! Another truth comes to his mind. He clenched his fists at his side to stop himself from reaching and shake the hell out of her.
"Is this were you've been all night? With him? He almost choked on the last word. Carrie still avoided his gaze.
"I'm going to sleep" She turned around and went into the bedroom, closing the door quietly behind her. Aaron felt...drained. He was shocked, hurt and angry. The reality of her words was finally catching up with him. She cheated! Carrie cheated him! Too astounded to move he just stood there glancing at the closed door. His eyes sting with unleashed tears, but he refused to let them fall. He rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand. How could she do that to him? And after dropping that bomb, she'd just gone to sleep as nothing happened? Fuck that! Fuck her! He deserved an explanation!! He slammed the bedroom door open, startling her.
"How could you do that Carrie? Why did you do it? I've loved you, I fucking trusted you!" But more, he wanted to know for how long this has gone behind his back. "Who is it?" But he didn't let the words out; he wasn't sure he could handle the answer.
"It's over Aaron! Accept it! It just... happened. It doesn't matter who it is."
"No Carrie! To lose your keys or broke a nail 'happened'! You fucking cheated!"
"Fine, let's get this over with. I didn't want to tell you today, but like always you love to make me look like the bad one." She cast him a look filled with disapproval "You always act all mighty like you are fucking perfect! You drive me crazy!" She yelled," You have no idea how exhausting is to be around you!" He looked at her, and he didn't recognize her, she was an entirely different person.
"You know what Carrie? Fuck you! Don't throw this on me! It wasn't me the one who cheated!"
"The good Aaron, swearing at me? Oh my" She laughed. She just fucking laughed. Aaron wanted to hit her. For the first time in twenty-six years, he wanted to hit a woman! "I already filed the divorce papers. Tomorrow I will put the house for sale, the sooner, the better. I deserve half. Please, Aaron, don't make things harder than already are. I can't talk right now. I have a headache, and I'm tired. I think is the best if we do not see each other till everything is over" How could have been so blind? Did she always be like this, selfish and vicious? Had he been that dense?
He needed to get out. If he stayed any longer, he will do or say something he will regret later. Aaron turned around and left, slamming the door with enough force to shake the walls.
And that was just his morning, he needed to be at work in a couple of hours, and he was still in yesterday's clothes. His phone rang, recognized the ringtone he let out a groan. His brother, just great, he couldn't deal with him and his 'I told you so' right now, so he ignored the call. He will tell his crazy family later. Things couldn't get any worst.
Or they can. A couple of hours later Aaron lost his job. With his anger boiling just beneath the surface, Aaron was ready to burst. Christopher Bell, his incompetent boss, choose precisely this day for his weekly usually complaints and blaming Aaron for his own mistakes. He snapped at his boss telling him what a worthless piece of shit he was and then he resigned. He wasn't a violent man, he must have lost his mind, but even so, he didn't regret the outcome, he hated that job, the only reason he worked for that insurance company and the bar, for that fact, was for, well, Carrie.
Aaron felt so stupid and pathetic now. He worked his ass off so he can pay for that ridiculous big house. He indulged in her every whim. And for what, so she can have time to cheat on him? She had everything planned, the divorce, selling the house... why he didn't notice any of this? Her words are playing in his mind over and over again. Was he that bad of a husband? Did he wronged her? Maybe he neglected her and her needs? He gave his best to offer her everything she wanted, emotionally and financially. Aaron knows he works to much but without this he couldn't affor to buy the big house Carrie wanted. Confused and hurt he didn't know what to believe anymore.
His parents were married for more than 30 years, happy and loving like in the first days. He wanted that! A happy family, a loving wife, maybe kids someday. He didn't ask more. Did he? Was it too much to ask? Not that it matters anymore. Aaron knew that probably should go home and have a discussion with Carrie, but right now this shabby bar and the spiked whiskey in his hand was all that he wanted. At last, he didn't have a shift at the bar tonight. He didn't afford to lose that job too.
Aaron woke up some hours later, his head throbbed, and his mouth felt like he'd eaten mud. He looked around at what appeared to be a motel room with no idea how he got here. It was slightly dark in the place; he reached for his phone on the nightstand to see what time it was when he knocked over the bottle of whiskey. Fuck the time the bottle was better.
And here it was, at the end of his 'day' drunk, dumped by his wife, without a job, and soon without a house, texting with a girl about whose day was worse. He typed the text and press send.
'Your day is nothing compared with mine... BTW you got the wrong number.'
And just like that his thoughts wandered back at Carrie, and how she flushed down the toilet five years of marriage. Crap, he needed to stop thinking about that, or he'll go crazy. His phone vibrated in his hand announcing that he got another text.
'Sorry'
Aaron throws the phone on the bed, and he went to the bathroom. After taking care of his primal needs, he lowered the lid and sat on it, waiting for the room to stop spinning. His head was killing him, and he needed a shower. He stood up, a little shaky on his legs and went in front of the mirror. Pale, unshaved, and his eyes were bloodshot with dark circles under it. He looked like a freaking panda. Letting out a loud groan, he decided on the shower first.
Aaron didn't know for how long has sat in the shower. The water has long turned cold, freezing and shivering he turned off the tap and reached for a towel. Returning to the bedroom, he heard his phone ringing, but he ignored when he saw that it was Carrie. He had another eight missing calls and five messages, mostly from his family, and one text from that unknown number. He will talk with them eventually but not today, now he wanted to be left alone. Aaron read the text from that anonymous girl.
'Ok, how worst was your day?' Aaron wondered if he should tell a complete stranger about his life, but he decided he didn't care.
