           Chapter 1

There are many people who fall in love during the summer.  I'm not sure what the summer air contains, but I’m grateful for it.  Throughout the years, my world consisted of dark skies; dealing with depression for almost five years had become irritating.   At first, I despised the fact I lost friends due to my depression and attitude.  It seemed as if there wan't anyone who understood what I was going through.  Honestly, I didn't even know what was going on through my head.  I had so many confused thoughts throughout the years, that I stopped listening to myself and started to care less about anything that would and could occur.  In my junior year of High School, I met a girl named Nelcie.  She seemed as if she had everything under control.  Everyone at school hated this girl, I felt pity towards her.  How could someone judge a person without talking to them?   I walked toward her and introduced myself: "Hey, I'm Annabelle."

She gave me a stare that made it seem as if I were crazy.  While I took a chair beside her, she finally spoke: "Hi. I'm Nelcie. Why are you here?"

I ignored her last statement and just said "oh, what a nice name, so what's up?"  We were in our History class, and she didn't seem interested in the lesson and I wasn't either.  Though, she didn't talk to me at all.  Did my breath smell? Did I forget to put my deodorant on this morning?   I didn't know what was going on, but I continued to talk to her.

"so, are you enjoying your last year in high school?"

she replied, "uh, no. Can't you see?! Everyone from our Senior class hates me, and it isn't my fault at all."

"well, I don't hate you."

"That's because you don't know me. at all."

That moment, I felt nervous.  What was I doing here talking to some random girl that everyone hated?  I ignored her statement again.

Her appearance probably didn't help her with her reputation.  She had a short non-professional haircut, bleached hair, gauges the size of a quarter, a septum ring, lip pierced, and her hips pierced (which she made sure everyone saw).  Moreover, she had scars, cuts, and burns on her wrists.  I pretended as if I didn't see them and hid my scars and cuts with my sweater.

Since I was in Middle School, I have dealt with depression, I cut my wrists to ease my pain.  Sadly, that never worked.  I wasn't sure why I continued to speak to Nelcie if she made it clear she didn't want to talk to me-which made me feel disappointed.

"when's your lunch period?" I asked.

She gave me a blank stare and replied, "2nd...why?"

"Why won't you come sit with me during lunch?  We could talk more, well I could talk more" I replied with a smirk.

The bell rang and Nelcie stood up and left without an answer.
