"Mum, where are you?" Justin yelled into the phone "We've been waiting for you for thirty minutes" Silence "But it's an hour walking, and why?" Pause "He's where?!" His face was red "Okay, we'll be there in an hour" He hang up
"What's the matter?" I asked Justin
We had been waiting for mum since school ended, it had been half an hour and there wasn't anybody here, the school was empty
"We have to go to the nearest high school"
"St Maries" I answered automatically "Why?"
"Which direction?" He asked. I pointed to the right and we started walking "She said there was a car following"
I quickly assumed it was him. I mean, who else could it be?
We walked towards the other school, neither of us talking
Justin was right; when we reached St Maries an hour had passed
"So, where's mum?" I asked Justin, desperately wanting to seat down
"She was supposed to be hear" He said, scratching his head in desperation "Ugh, this woman is going to drive me crazy"
I sat down on the floor, knowing mum would take her time. She was either trying to distract him or she had gotten lost.
I heard Justin screaming on the back ground, like he always did when he got pissed off
"Sorry" A guy muttered when he hit me with his feet, not really caring
"Nothing" I said, closing my eyes
"Are you alright?" He said
"Yes" I simply said
He sat down beside me. I opened my eyes to stare at him. He was... Gorgeous, actually. He had blond hair and light blue eyes. His body was very good built, I could see it through his shirt, which had the first buttons unbuttoned and the sleeves were rolled up above his elbow. I stared at him like it was the first time I had seen the sun
"You could take a picture, it'll last longer" He said, smiling smugly. Oh, so he was the player type
I smiled and turned to look at Justin, who was by now ripping his hair off
"So, what are you doing here?"
"Waiting for my mum to pick me up" I took a look at his thoughts. Oh. He thought I was pretty, and in a none-jerk way
"I could give you a ride" He said
"No, it's okay" I said. Besides, I didn't know where we were moving, mum had kept it a secret
"You're not from this school are you? I would have noticed you"
"No, I'm from Jorgestown high school"
"That's far away"
"Tell me" I muttered
"And why are you here?"
"I don't know, my brother told me my mother said to wait for her here"
He looked at Justin, who was back to yelling on his phone
Wind blew and I was freezing. I pulled my hoodie sleeves down and zipped it until the top of my stomach
"You shouldn't be on the floor, its freezing" He said
"There's nowhere else to sit" I answered him
"Come inside, they won't mind, there's no one by this time"
"And why are you here?" I asked as I took the hand he was offering, helping me get up. I couldn't help but notice how his touch sent fire where he touched
"Detention. And I had to do a project later"
He guided me through the corridors and opened a door
"Here, it's the hottest room" He said, letting me walk in first
It was the literature classroom "How come the literature class is the hottest?"
"It's the one with more heating"
I shrugged and sat on a chair, leaving my purse on the table. I looked at the time. Four o'clock.
"So, what do you want to do?"
I realized I didn't know his name "What's your name?"
"Jake"
"Hailey" I said, nodding my head
"Hey, you wanna go out sometime" He said, wiggling his eyebrow
"I barely know you" I said, confused "I just met you at the street"
"Yeah, but you like me"
Ugh. Big-headed much? I turned my face to the window and ignored him
"So? What? Wanna go out?" He insisted
I shrugged.
"Here, I'll give you my number" He said, writing it on my arm with a permanent marker. I looked at him while he was writing, memorizing his perfect features. When he finished he looked up, locking his blue eyes with mine. It was hypnotic. I could get lost in those beautiful blue eyes. On that moment, my phone rang, making me look away from him
"Hello?"
"Mum's here, finally" Justin said
"I'm coming" I hang up "Can you take me back to the school entrance?" I doubted I could get it on my own
"Sure, no problem" He said getting up
We walked back to where Justin was, tapping his foot on annoyance
"Where's mum?"
"She said she would be here in two minutes" Just as he said that, mum's 4x4 appeared from the corner "Finally" Justin thought
I turned around to face Jake, who was staring at me "Well, uh, bye" I
said
"Bye, call me" He reminded me
Yeah, sure. That wasn't the first thing in my 'to do' list
I opened the cars door and stepped in, Justin following me
"What took you so long?" Justin asked angrily
"I had a car following" She said as she pulled of the school and into the road
I turned around; searching for one "Is he following us now?" I asked
"No, I lost him a few roads down" She said as she hit the gas pedal
"We're taking the long route home, just in case" She told us
"How long?" I asked
"An hour"
Justin sighed. He was bored. I decided to get my homework done, since I probably wouldn't have time when we reached home. I took out my English book and a pen. I had a paper due tomorrow that I hadn't started. Better late than never.
Half an hour had passed, Justin was deeply asleep and mum kept risking looks into the review mirror, probably making sure he wasn't following. I had finished the paper in fifteen minutes, it was quite easy, and done the rest of my homework. So I pulled my iPod out and the headphones and started listening to music, having nothing better to do.
"This can't be happening" I heard mum think
"What's happening?" I asked as I took off my headphones
"He's following us" She said "I'm gonna try and distract him"
I turned around and saw a red car following. With just one look I was as sure as hell it was him. One glance. That's all it took.
Mum took a sharp turn, driving past some cars which she almost hit. That didn't get him off our tracks. He still followed, like it was the normal thing to do. Mum kept taking every turn she saw, trying to distract him. On one of this, Justin hit his head against the window and woke up. I muffled my laugh. It wasn't the right time to laugh, and besides, my brother would kill me
"Darling, try and hear his thoughts" Mum said
"What's happening?" Justin demanded to know
"He's following us" Mum said
I closed my eyes in concentration and looked intently for his thoughts. Mum and Justin’s thoughts just came into my mind every time I tried to push them away
"I can't, yours are too loud" I said
"Try now" Justin said
I tried again. This time I could.
"He's just concentrated on following us" I said as I kept reading his thoughts "And that you will pay for everything?" I said. I had no idea what he was thinking about
"By 'you', who does he mean?" Justin asked
"Mum and dad"
"Uh, mum, do you know him?" Justin asked
"No" There was an edge to her thoughts, but she had still the 'wall' so I couldn't hear his thoughts
"I don't get it, he wants mum and dad to pay for something but he is after us" Justin was saying, probably to himself
I turned around and looked at him.
"Careful kids, I'm gonna take a turn" Mum warned us
She turned suddenly, Justin almost on top of me from the force of it. And that's when everything started. He did the exact same thing mum did so she went crazy. It looked like an action film, those where the car is chased by police and it's madness. Mum kept taking turns suddenly, almost hitting every car on her way, while he just trailed behind.
I was looking at his car when suddenly I heard something crush. I quickly turned around, hoping it wasn't anything serious. Mum kept driving, and much faster now. That's when I realized what we had done. Mum and crashed into a "no passing" sign on the road, obviously not doing what it said. The road was empty. Mum kept driving like a mad woman all the way until we heard a bip and the car stopped
"Damn it, we're out of gas" She said "Hide"
"Mum, he's already seen us" Justin said
"You could move the car with your gift" I suggested, trying to calm everyone down
"I could try, but it'll probably waste all of my energy. And I could only move it a few miles" He said
"Shoot. We're gonna die" Mum thought
That's when I made up my mind and did the first thing I thought off. I opened the door, mum and Justin yelling behind me, an stepped outside, ready to stand up for my family. I didn't think of what I was doing, 'cause that would probably freak me out and I would go running to the car, scared to death.
I heard Justin thoughts; he wanted to come with me
"Don't" I told him severely
"But Hale—"
I cut him off "If someone's gotta die, better be just one person"
He stood there, half of his body already out of the car. Mum was crying. I could hear her sobs from here.
That's when I took a step forward, coming nearer to him. Then I took another. When I was halfway through the distance from his car to mine, I stopped, not able to move any further. I closed my eyes. I was ready to take death if it was for my family, but I wasn't ready to see the scene. I stood there, vulnerable, arms extended. He would kill me in any second. I would never know why. I just hoped my family could get saved.
Then I heard it. I heard the sound of a gun being shot.
