I feared someone would ask this. It's not exactly the happiest moment of my life for sure.
"You don't have to answer that E. That was rude and we wouldn't want to bring up bad memories." Perry said looking at Julie with a 'what are you doing' look.
"No it's okay." I said looking down at my intertwined hands. I took a deep breath and sat on the coffee table across from them.
"Okay, um. Well the last thing I remember was sleeping. I woke up suddenly because I couldn't breath." I could feel tears brimming my eyes, but I didn't let them fall. I looked down at my knees. I couldn't bear to look at either of them in the eyes.
"I was being suffocated by my own pillow. I past out and the person who tried to kill me brought me to a dark, cold place. He would drug me." I said my voice cracking.
And do terrible things to me." I said arching down crying. I held my face in my hands water seeping through my fingers. Someone rested their hand on my back, but I pulled away instinctively. I pulled my shirt up showing them my back, what that monster had done to me.
Scars were ubiquitous. Scars from knive slashes, burn marks, bite marks, Corpse marks. I heard someone gasp so I pulled my shirt back down.
"He would cut me, burn me, one time he even brought aggressive dogs in. For a year this went on until one day he came back a different person. He was bloody and he wasn't walking right. He ran at me, biting my wrist." I said showing them my wrist that had a blue bite scar on it.
"R found me and hit the guy upside the head. I was flopping and flailing around. It's like I was having a seizure. It felt like my whole body was on fire. R came over to help me and then the man got up and bit him on the wrist as well." I said looking at R with deep contrite. If he never would of looked for me, he would most likely still be a Human. It was quiet for a while and I could feel the stained tears on my face. I cleared my throat and looked around. Everyone was sad and held a look of sympathy, but I don't want people to feel sorry.
"Please don't feel sorry. This is something that I could never control. Plus it happened a long time ago and we can't change the past. I'm going to bed. Goodnight." I said standing up from my spot and walked to the kitchen pouring myself a glass of water.
"There's a room upstairs for all of you. Have a great night." I said walking to my room and hopping in my green and brown polka-dotted comforter. I pulled the blankets over my shoulders snuggling into the blankets. It was ice-cold tonight.
I replayed everything that I just discussed with Julie, Perry, and R. I hated thinking about that memory. Why couldn't I have a good memory before I left. I was kept in that underground basement for over a year, and no authorities could help because they were caught up with the epidemic.
At the time, I didn't know there was an epidemic because that awful man held me prisoner and cut off from society. I stared at the walls for what felt like ever. I just continued to stare blankly and soon my eyes got heavy and I fell asleep.
*"Evangeline, honey come to momma." A beautiful woman with majestic honey gold blond hair swaying behind her. The beautiful little girl's hair, who oddly looked like me, swished behind her as she ran to her mom's arms with a sunflower in hand.
"Mommy, I got you a flower." She said in a cute, innocent voice handing the flower to her mother, who stuck it behind her ear.
"You look like a princess mommy." The little girl said smiling and caressing her momma's porcelain face. The mother smiled and picked another flower out of the garden sticking it behind Evangeline's ear.
"There you are. Now you look like a princess too." She said smiling at her daughter's young face. She held her daughter's tiny hands.
"One day you are going to meet a very special boy, who loves you for being you, and you are going to live happily ever after." Her mother said, both exchanging smiles.*
I woke up from this odd dream. Was that me and my mom? Is my name Evangeline? All sorts of questions that stirred up from this dream soared though my brain.
Since I knew I wasn't going back to bed from all the curiosity, I pulled the sheets off me cold air surrounded me making me grab a blanket and wrap it around myself. I stood up, the cold from the wood floor sent shivers throughout my body and I walked on my tip toes to the kitchen.
I got some fruit out of the fridge and walked outside pulling my blanket closer to my body, and sitting down on a cushioned couch under a ledge. I ate some fruit while looking out at the beautiful night sky.
Even through all the chaos with the epidemic, the stars still smiled brightly and that gave me hope. Hope that one day, everything will get better and we all could live in peace. I heard the sliding door slide open, and I turned my head looking at the person who came out. It was Perry.
"Oh, hey." He said walking over to me and sitting down. I heard him shivering so I stood up and wrapped some of the blanket around him. I lifted my feet on the couch and he lied his freezing ones against my toes trying to get them warm. He wrapped his right arm around my shoulder keeping us both warm. I blushed profusely at his actions and snuggled into his chest.
"So, you can't sleep either?" I questioned looking up at his face. He shook his head left and right and sighed.
"I had a nightmare of my father's death." He said looking down at his toes. I hugged him closer.
"I'm sorry about that." I said truly contrite. We sat there in silence for a while until he spoke up.
"So why are you awake?" He questioned.
"I had a weird dream. I don't know if it was a memory from when I was little. I think it was because the little girl looked just like me and her name started with an E." I said thinking hard.
"Wow that's really cool. You are getting some memories back. Did you find out what your name is?" He said smiling down at me. I smiled back up at him. Hopefully this really is my name.
"Evangeline." I said looking up at the stars. When I looked back down, Perry's smile shined even brighter, causing me to laugh.
"That's a beautiful name." He said smiling and looking at the stars. I blushed a deep red, thankful that it was dark out and he wouldn't be able to see it. I looked at him as he watched the twinkling stars. The full moon's rays beamed down onto his face making him look like a god.
I rested my head on his shoulder and sighed looking up at the stars as well.
"I haven't seen stars since before the epidemic broke out. They keep us trapped all the time. It's like we're dogs trapped in cages." He said sadly. I took his hand in mine and squeezed.
"Hopefully this is all over soon." I said rubbing his hand in circles sadly. Either Humans are going to kill all of us, or they will see that some Corpses are changing and we work together.
My eyes started getting heavy and soon I drifted off to sleep on Perry's shoulder. I felt a light kiss tingle in my forehead and smiled.
*Perry's P.O.V*
E just finished telling us how she became a Corpse, which was a very traumatic event. When she showed us what that man did to her, I really wanted to shoot him in the head. How could someone ever do that?
It's so surreal to find a Corpse like E. I can't even call her a Corpse. She's so much like a Human, she's unique, and she's beautiful. I must be crazy, I just called a Corpse beautiful. What am I thinking?
I started walking upstairs to the first bedroom and walked in plopping myself on the bed falling fast asleep.
* We were back when Julie and I crossed over. I remember the concern I felt for my dad. I haven't talked to him in days, and that's unusual. He usually makes sure to contact me somehow. Julie says he's just busy, but I don't buy it.
Julie and I were walking past the construction site when I spotted my dad.
"Dad! Hey Dad!" I said smiling brightly and stepping closer to him. He looked at me in a daze. He looked different. Paler skin, bloody? Oh no, please let that not be what I think it is.
"Perry step back." Julie said cautiously. I ignored her and walked forward more.
"Dad, it's me Perry." I said worried. He sniffed the air grunting and running at me along with other Corpses that surrounded him. I turned around running, but tripped on something on the ground. I looked at my dad frightened, and then I heard a shot and he pelted to the ground.
I looked at him with horror in my eyes and Julie pulled on my arm shooting her gun at nearby Corpses. I jumped up running away with her.*
I shot up cold sweat dripping on me. I go out of bed and walked to the nearby bathroom looking in the mirror. I looked like shit. Bags were under my eyes and sweat sparkled in the light against my skin. I sighed walking downstairs. I needed some fresh air, so I slide open the sliding door and cold air slapped my body around. I was about to go back downstairs until I saw someone staring at me.
I saw E sitting there wrapped in a huge comforter, which looked extremely warm.
"Oh, hey." I said walking over to her and sitting down. I wrapped my hands around my body shivering. I felt her wrap the blanket around me and she lifted her feet on the couch as I lied my freezing ones against her warm toes trying to get them warm. I wrapped my right arm around her shoulder, which kept both of us warm. I felt my heart beat the tune of a drum as she snuggled into my chest. I smiled and pulled her to me closer.
"So, you can't sleep either?" She questioned looking up at my face. I shook my head left and right and sighed thinking about my father. I sure missed him.
"I had a nightmare of my father's death." I said looking down at my toes. I felt her hug me closer, which felt very comforting.
"I'm sorry about that." She said truly contrite. We sat there in silence for a while until I spoke up, wondering why she was up. I know already that she sleeps like regular Humans.
"So why are you awake?" I questioned curiously. I wonder if she likes me. I snapped out of it and listened when she started talking.
"I had a weird dream. I don't know if it was a memory from when I was little. I think I was because the little girl looked just like me and her name started with an E." She said with a cute thinking face.
"Wow that's really cool. You are getting some memories back. Did you find out what your name is?" I said smiling down at her gorgeous face. She smiled back up at me, curiosity in my eyes.
"Evangeline." She said looking up at the stars. I smiled at her. That was a beautiful name. Hmm Evangeline Kelvin? She finally looked back down seeing me smile and we both laughed.
"That's a beautiful name." I said smiling and looking at the stars now. I thought of what it would be like if I kissed her. I continued looking at the stars debating whether or not I should kiss her.
"I haven't seen stars since before the epidemic broke out. They keep us trapped all the time. It's like we're dogs trapped in cages." I said sadly not choosing to kiss her. She probably doesn't like me anyway. I felt her take my hand in hers and squeeze.
"Hopefully this is all over soon." She said rubbing my hand in circles sadly. I looked at her wondering what she was thinking, but then looked back up at the stars. I missed them so much.
When I looked back down, she was fast asleep in my arms. I smiled and placed a small kiss on her forehead and lied my head on hers falling asleep peacefully since my father died.
