PROLOGUE
Dad's eyes studied the page avidly, gaze skimming over the names he had scribbled down in illegible ink while ignoring the ones he had already crossed out. "Ah, how about Matt?"
"We used that one," I answered.
"Did we?" Dad brought his brows together, a dark line furrowing. "I don't remember."
"Three years ago, Dad. Wesley Park."
"Right." He nodded at the recovered memory, took out his black pen, and crossed out the name. He studied the page a bit more before he finally turned to me. "Damien?"
"Damien," I repeated to myself. It sort of had a nice ring to it. "Yeah, that's good," I told him and shifted in my seat uncomfortably to stare out the passenger window of our mid-sized sedan. The warm summer breeze smacked my face rather rudely, and I rolled up the window in retaliation.
Dad let out a short grunt as he reached into the backseat to retrieve his little fancy machine that he bought not too long ago to make fake IDS for the both of us. I didn't really know where he got it from because he never told me that sort of information. It would be unlike him if he did.
In a matter of seconds, he had my ID made and handed it to me. I studied the card in my hands, staring down at my new name, Damien Jacobs, and my age, 24. I was really 21 years of age, but Dad thought it was necessary to add a few numbers to my actual age so that it would add up to the whole facade we were trying to uphold.
The machine generated an ID for him in which he automatically stuck in his back pocket.
"What's your name?" I asked him.
"Gregory Jacobs," he answered with confidence, "what's yours?"
"Damien Jacobs," I responded. "I'm unemployed. I went to Berkley in California and got a bachelor's degree in Psychology. I'm interested in applying for the FBI but with the constant moving, I decided to just wait until I found a wife and got settled down to look for a job. Until then, I live with my father, Gregory Jacobs," I replied, repeating all of the information he had told me earlier.
"Atta boy." Dad's lips tugged upwards into a proud smile. "And why did we move here?"
"We moved here for a change in scenery. You love the ocean and I like swimming."
"I'm proud of you, son," he said, a small smile on his face.
I believed him. After all, we came a long way. The first time we did this, I couldn't quite catch on. Dad would always call me something out of my name but I didn't know why. Now, it was different. After changing my name so many times, I've forgotten what my real one is.
"Now, get some new clothes before we head out," he demanded, pulling me out of my thoughts. I nodded in agreement and opened up the passenger door, closing it behind me and beginning my journey to the department store ahead of us.
This was going to be the start of something new.
