The cab arrived, sooner than I would have liked, to a beautiful garden themed restaurant. There was a miniature pond by the front entrance that gleamed and glittered in the sun.

I got out the car and made my way to the door. When suddenly I was stopped. "Fa Mulan?" I heard a raspy voice ask. I turned my head slowly to the person who grabbed me.

It was a extremely short and slim man who had to be about 50 years old. He had a stringy beard that covered his long chin and his eyes were close together. His fingers that were clasped around my upper arm were as long as they were cold.

"Yes sir." I said cautiously. "Are Mr. Tia?"

"Good heavens no. I'm just his butler. I will be accompanying you two this evening. Right this way."

He lead me inside to a table that seemed to be all by itself in the back of the restaurant. "May I introduce my employer, the great Tai Chen. Master Tai, this is Fa Mulan."

The man stepped out of the shadows of the booth and stood to his full hight, which was high above both our heads. He was a very overweight man, and his eyes were widely spaced out. He seemed to be the exact opposite of his butler.

He grunted at me and then waved his butler away. He sat back down then looked up at me expectedly. "Well? Is your petticoat too tight for you to sit?" He asked angrily.

Shocked, I took my seat in front of him, setting my umbrella beside me in the booth. I put on the sweater Ma ma gave me, suddenly feeling chilly.

He roughly began to play with the cherry blossoms that were sitting in the glass vas on the table. The pink petals stood in stark contrast as they littered the mahogany wood. "You're a young little thing aren't you." He looked me over with his beady eyes repeatedly. I crossed my legs under the table uncomfortably and pulled my sweater tighter on my shoulders. "Have you been married before?"

"No." I whispered.

"You'll have to speak up when you talk to me girl."

"No. I haven't." I said slightly louder.

"Oh good. So your a virgin." Oh my God. I said nothing in reply. " How many kids does your mother have?"

"Only me sir." I answered. Keeping my head down. He grunted disapprovingly.

"What about her mother?"

"She had my mother and her 3 sisters."

His face distorted. "You're of no use to me if you can't give me at least one son." He rubbed his chin. "But your such a pretty thing. I pray to my ancestors that you can break the curse that seems to plague the woman in your family." I clenched my jaw and continued to look down.

We ate our food in silence. Well he ate his food while I pushed my food around in my bowl.

"Did you eat before you came?"

"No."

"Then eat your food! I'm not paying for something you barely have touched." I sucked in a breath and stuffed the chopsticks full of food in my mouth. In the manner of minutes I was done with half of my meal. "I didnt say be a pig." He added.

I glared at him and pushed my bowl aside. "Im not very hungry today."

His eyes grew devilish and I saw a ghost of a smile play on his lips, but it came out more of a creepy grin, the sight was quite scary. He leaned forward slightly. "Do I make you nervous Fa Mulan?" He chuckled. "Is it because of my charming looks? Well dont let this face fool you, girl." He clamped his hand down on top of mine and it took all my will power not to pull away. "I can be quite gentle, when I want to be." His ghost of a smile spread into a grin and I realized this was meant to be flirtatious. I felt sick to my stomach.

But as quickly as his perverted grin flashed on his face, it dropped into a sinister scowl. "Just don't EVER cross me. Do you understand?" He squeezed my hand harder this time, crushing my fingers. I yelped in surprised, and my first instinct was to push him off of me, but he caught my wrist with his other hand and crushed that too. "Please, this hurts!" I pleaded while trying to keep my voice down. This was humiliating enough, I wanted to bring as little attention to my situation as possible.

"I said do you understand?" His voice sounded icy cold. I nodded in  response because my mouth ran dry. Finally, he released my hands. "Good. Now do as I say and finish your food WITHOUT making yourself look like a starving cat."

The rest of the meal I kept my head down and finished my food. I stuffed every last grain of rice in my mouth just so I wouldn't have to hear his awful voice for the rest of this pathetic date. How could Mama and Papa pair me with this control freak of a man?

He then payed for both of our meals, but not before ordering one more cup of pipping hot tea. He made sure to emphasize how much he detests anything room temperature. The tea had to be the hottest of hot.

When he was done with that he looked me over and a ugly smile spread across his face. "Now this is how I like my woman." He mused. "Silent, and waiting for command." He laughed deeply as I grind my teeth to keep from putting this pig back in his place. "We're done with dinner, its time to go to the pictures." His butler came to stand by his side to wait for further instructions. The waiter came and placed the cup of tea near Mr. Tai, leaving with a bow.

"Im not feeling very well Mr.Tia, could we skip the movie and take a walk instead?" I tried to say as sweetly as possible. "The fresh air would do me good."

He slammed his fist on the table. A few people around us turned to look at what caused the commotion. "I said I like my woman SILENT!"

I couldn't hide the distaste that appeared on my face . Thats it! This jerk needs to be taught a lesson! "Now shut up and lets get moving!" He attempted to get up from the table, but his large belly blocked his way. His butler scrambled to his aid but lifted his hand to stop him. " I want the girl to do it."

Just stay calm Mulan, your doing this for Ma ma and Pa pa. Just get this over with. I thought to myself. As soon as I placed my hand on the table to stand up, I knocked the table slightly, spilling his tea all over his gold and red robe. "IT'S HOOOOOOOOT!" He yelped and struggled to get up faster, this time the butler did pull him up. He dabbed himself with the napkin he snatched off the table, but it only smeared the tea stain around which, to my satisfaction, was right on his crotch. I struggled to contain my giggles as I watched him squirm in dismay, it had to be the funniest thing I have seen all day.

"YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY?" He lashed out on me. That outburst wasn't even enough to snuff the laughter out of me.

"Im so sorry sir." I giggled again. "I didn't mean to cause any harm."

"CLUTSY GOOD FOR NOTHING SLUT!" He grabbed my arm and jerked me towards him. Though many people were looking at us now, no one would dare interrupt a man of his status while he puts his "woman" in her place. It was considers rude and out of order.

If I didn't take action now, I could get hurt badly. "ILL KILL YOU FOR THAT STUNT YOU PULLED. HOW DARE YOU-" I cut him off by slapping him with all the power I could muster, which was surprisingly a lot. He let go of me and stumbled back. Most likely, the blow was so surprising, he literally didn't know what hit him. In china, it was unheard of for a woman to hit a man, even after he assaulted her first. I got the idea from an American novel I read last summer.

He looked me straight in the eyes. "Your existence alone brings dishonor to your family name. I pity any man stupid enough to marry the likes of you. Dong! Remove this wretch from my sight. I don't care where you take her, nor what happens to her."

"Yes Master Tai." He gripped my upper arm once again and led me out of the restaurant.

________________________________

I walked aimlessly around the small town just outside of the restaurant. It would be hours before the cab was scheduled to pick me up and take me home. In other words, I only had a few hours left till I faced my expecting parents again.

Just the thought of their poor regretful faces was enough to suck the joy right out of me. Tia Chen's words replayed over and over in my mind. "Your existence alone is a dishonor to your family name."

All I was doing was protecting myself! Who know's what that psycho would have done if I didn't stop him.

But something tells me Pa pa won't see it that way.

I Longed to be home again, playing on our farm. I never had to worry about things like this. I spent countless hours playing with Little Brother or my many cousins that came to visit me, all boys by the way. They never treated me any less because I was a girl. Honestly, I don't think they ever saw me as a girl until I turned about 15. Ma ma made me come inside earlier to help prepare dinner or even clean. Sometimes it was something as simple as practice my writing lessons. "Its time for you to become a woman. These childish ways must be put to a stop Mulan."

While I had to tend to that, my boy cousins got to spar and learn hand to hand combat. When I could sneak away, they tried to teach me what they learned but often to no avail. My father would soon catch them and scold them about putting silly dreams in my head. "My daughter is to become a proper lady, not a warrior."

The boys would often say they couldn't imagine me as a proper lady, I knew how to do too much. And for that, I have always been secretly thankful to my older cousins.

I smiled slightly at the thought of my childhood adventures when a whistle pulled me from my day dream. I looked up to see a group of men standing at a corner staring at me as if I was lunch. They each competed for my attention, winking and calling out to me, but I was not used to attention like this. I ignored them the best I could till I turned down another street.

Thunder cracked overhead as My eyes rested on a shop window close by. I saw my reflection in the glass so I drew closer, dismayed by what I saw. My ruby lips and powdered checks teamed with my baby doll dress and my thickly rimmed eyes made me look like a girl who walked straight out of a magazine. I must look silly walking around this part of town all dressed up like this. In fact, I just looked silly all together.

The rain poured down on my head and my frizzy curls dropped down and now appeared to be depressed and limp. I began to cry my eyes out. Could this day get any worse?

I pulled the sweater on  tighter around my shoulders and reached for my umbrella when i realized, I left it and my purse back at the restaurant. Frustrated, I began to rub my make up off my face as I wept. First one side, then the other. When I was done, I sulked down the street still weeping in my hands. I didn't even recognize myself anymore.

I never cry in public...
