His head fell as he realized that he wouldn't be able to keep his promise to his mother. "I'm sorry mom, I won't be coming for dinner." A single man tear fell down his blood stained cheek as he remembered the promise he made the other day.
Flashback
The 20 year old navy officer walked to the kitchen of his apartment to make breakfast for his mother. He had to hurry so he would be able to catch his plane flying to Iraq. "Derek?" The timid frail voice of his mother broke the silence he was in. "Yea?" He looked up to face the old woman. "Can you make me a promise dear?" "Of course, what is it?" "...please come back safely. I expect you home for dinner this weekend understood?" She asked with a pleading look in her eyes. Derek hesitated, he wasn't sure he could make such a promise and keep it. But the desperate look in her eyes changed his mind. "Alright...I promise." A little later he stood in the airport hugging his frail old mother. "Please..be safe." With those words the mother stood back and watched her son walk away, possibly for the last time.
Flashback end
He brought his head up and looked his captor in the eyes. The captor saw nothing but pure sadness in the young mans eyes. "Please if your going to kill me do it now. If not then let me go. Please." That night at the rebels camp a single gunshot could be heard ringing through the silent night air.
Time skip 2 days
A older navy officer walked through the apartment conplex in search of room 223b. When he found it he knocked on the door and waited patiently. The door opened and a frail old lady could be seen in a white nightdress her grating hair astray. "How can I help you?" She asked. "In sorry to have to tell you this but your son was found dead in an abandoned rebel camp on enemy grounds. He wrote his final words on this letter he wrote before departure." He handed the now crying mother a old tea stained envelope. She got up and shakily made her way to her living room after closing her door. She sat on the couch and opened the letter with shaking hands as her lip quivered with held in tears. It read: dear mom, if you are reading this, I guess I didn't make it back for dinner. I'm so sorry for not being able to keep my promise to you. I hope you can forgive me for not being able to help cook dinner. I love you mom, from your son: Derek.
The mother shook her head while tears streamed down her face. "I'm not mad,I'm just agrivated. You weren't supposed to die before me." She grabbed a picture of her son of the shelf and hugged it. "I raised an idiot" she smiled and continued to weep in silence, while her son was watching her from above making sure no harm came to his beloved mother.
