An Argument

"don't you think that dress is a little bit too short?"

"umm, it's fine" she replied, *he's babying me again...* she thought

"okay, I respect your judgment" the hardest thing for him to say.

"you really think it's too short?" she replied, although she thought of it as babying, she still took his advice.

"Just a little bit too short... If you want to wear it, that's fine. I'm just saying." he just couldn't keep his mouth shut about things like this, he understood that his daughter was a teenager, and that she wouldn't always listen to him, but sometimes he couldn't accept it.

"but I look good in it." she said, that dress she was wearing, her mother's old red dress, she cut off the old frayed end and made it much smaller. The dress perfectly accented her green eyes, which was another thing she got from her mother. Her brown hair however, was all from her dad.

"you do... You remind me of your mother actually" a small smile appeared on his face, and soon, hers also

"really?" she said.

"yeah, I took your mother on our first date, and she was wearing that dress, I'm sure she'd be happy to see you wearing it." he got up, not only to stretch his back, but to make himself heard.

"Anyway, where are you going tonight? You know it would make me feel better if you told me."

"umm, nowhere dad." she replied, the stutter and hesitation in her voice was a clear sign she was lying.

"you know you aren't going nowhere, otherwise you wouldn't be dressed as good. We both know you don't go out for nothing" his worry outweighed his inhibition

"I only came to see you at your office, that's all..." she was lying, but her dad knew that.

"Oh, okay... But if you do go out, be back by eleven thirty, and if you get drunk, have a friend take you home, cause I'll be working late, okay sweetie?" he knew his daughter had plans, he just cared for her safety. She sighed, making sure he could hear it

"okay dad... "

"hey, don't act like I don't know what kids do nowadays, I did the same things when I was in highschool." the room fell silent, then he spoke up again.

"I just wanna keep you safe"

"I know dad, I'll be careful" she left his office and closed the door behind her. He took deep breaths trying to calm himself.

"I really hope she listened to me...."
