CHLOE ROBERTS
I try to adjust my eyes to what seems to be standing a few feet away from me. Golden bright lights surround its wings as the creature lands to where I stand.
"You are the only one who can stop him." said the winged creature. Maybe he's an angel or something?
I rub my eyes still trying to adjust the brightness. I can see his mouth moving as though he's telling me something. This is weird. I remain still and try to decipher the words coming out from him. Still nothing. I look around.
I find myself standing in the middle of a very huge room. Everything is made of white marble. The walls, flooring, the huge posts and even the ceiling. Where am I? The room is very well lit by the elegant golden chandeliers lining the ceiling. Am I at a ball? I mentally laughed at myself. There's nobody else he.re but me and this huge winged creature. He wears a white robe that glitters in gold. Wow. He holds a gold sceptre in his left hand and he wears golden sandals that look like gladiators, gold gladiators that is.
Oh my. I hope I'm not naked. I gulp and took a look at my hopefully-not-naked-body. I see a pink garment that glitters a green shade reaching the floor. It looks like a robe that is supported with a golden silk belt. The sleeves reach the half of my arm. There's this arm band that I'm wearing just below the sleeve of my left arm like of those ancient Egyptian queens, though this one's a combination of gold and silver melted together without mixing them together and moulded it into an arm band. I notice that my hair is curled and tied sideways with a heavy silver S-shaped cuff that doesn't fall out of place. I raise the skirt to see a gold and silver melted gladiator, just like my arm band reaching the middle of my lower leg. I bend down to inspect the metal straps. It's surprising that it doesn't puncture through my skin. I'm right. They're padded. This is very cool. I smile. It would be nice to see other people dressed like us walking around this huge room though.
The room dimmed. I look up and search for the huge golden angel. "He's gone." I utter. "I need to get out of here." I say to myself as I begin to stand and look for a way out.
I turn to see a huge double door and I run towards it. I didn't have to open it with all my might 'coz it creaked open by itself. I look back hoping to find the huge angel. Still empty. I slip out of the door.
A sudden gush of wind hit my face and I find myself in a forest. I shuddered as I look around. This is seriously creepy. The forest is very dark. Oh please. I started to walk toward a pair of trees. Suddenly, it was as if I was morphed into somewhere else that I find myself in an outland. There's no source of light except the red coloured sky that illuminates the place.
The place is lifeless that I cannot even feel any life form around. There's nothing but dust and dead bodies scattered all around. The entire place smells rotten. I can’t believe that nature has its own downfall.
This must be a nightmare, but as I try to convince myself that this is just a dream, the more it hits me that it's real.
Suddenly, darkness enveloped the whole place. A complete dense blackness unlike anything I had known before. My heart is pounding hard. I feel like crying. I want this nightmare to end. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply.
Focus Chloe. You'll be fine. I open my eyes to search for light, but all I could see are a pair of black eyes. I step back and looked around. He flew back a few feet away as well. We're inside the huge room again. Only, it's dimmer.
I look back to the owner of the pair of black eyes that I previously set upon. He has a pair of black wings engulfed with red and yellow flames dancing around the feathers. He wears a red robe that glitters in black. He doesn't look scary. Just a pleasant young man with clever looking black eyes, seemingly angled nose, and thin red lips as though he had just drank fresh blood and had some left all over his lips.
He smirks, showing a deep dimple on his cheek. He flew swiftly towards me.
“Give up now Cathaleia." he says still smirking. Cathaleia? Who is she?
He looks younger than me., more of an 18 year old kid. Set aside that, he's making me tremble inside as though he can kill me in an instant. No Chloe! You have to stand against this kid, you have to .. says my inner self.
I look at him straight in the eye and try to speak... Oh my.
I feel as though my lips had been sewn together. I can't move my lips. I'm not Cathaleia! Get away from me!!
The naughty kid laughed haughtily. Suddenly, he grasped me by my neck and pinned me to the wall really hard. He smiled even more. "Instead of suffering even more Cathaleia, you better come with me."
I try to get away from his grip, but he held me firmly against the wall. I feel hazy, his grip loosens and I fell down to my knees. I could feel myself being lifted by the black winged kid. I close my eyes and felt the tears fall from my eyes. I just want to end this nightmare. He slowly lifted me up.
"You stay right there Malik!" I hear someone cried. I opened my eyes and see him surging towards us. I see the kid look at me disappointingly. "I guess this isn't the time yet Cathaleia." I hear him say, then he disappeared.
I collapsed weakly to another winged creature. I look at him and notice that he was different from the man with the golden flamed wings. He looks younger. His wings are coloured white engulfed with red flames. I glance at the gold necklace he's wearing lying on his dark blue sheer garment with a silver silk belt fastened around his waist also supporting his white silk trouser that glitters like his blue garment.
I feel my hand moving itself to his warm cheek. “You're safe now.” he whispered.
He got hold of my hand, gently kissing and intertwining it with his.
I love the sound of his voice. Something that can make me feel assured of his resolve to protect me. I glance at his silvery blond hair and notice his bright corn blue eyes. He stares at me lovingly, as though I had been his lost love. I feel my cheeks flushing by the way he stares at me.
I try to sit up, still his arms around me. As I regain my breath, I feel something warm trying to make itself out from my back. It pushed me forward and there it is, a pair of amber wings engulfed with pale pink flames. I have wings too!?
He smiles, as he rubs my shoulder.
I look around and witness how our flames illuminate the previously dim room.
I glance at him, his face just a few inches from mine. He has mature features; a pair of serene corn blue eyes, an angled nose, a prominent jaw and a thin pinkish lips now forming into a smile. I see his wings wrapping around us. So did my wings.
"I will see you again-" he trails of as he gazes my face as though memorizing my features before he departs and meet me again.
He lowers his gaze to my lips. "Chloe." he locked his eyes to mine and runs his hand behind my head. He inch closer to me and kissed me softly.
Light creeps into my eyes. I slowly open my eyes and find myself lying on the bed realizing everything was a dream. Good thing that it was, except for the kiss.
I run my fingers to my lips. That was my first kiss, only from a dream. But it seemed so real. I examine my clothes half expecting see the same robe I wore. Nope. I'm still in my uniform. I smile.
I finally rise from my bed and stand in front of the mirror. Right. I just fell to my bed last night and fell asleep just when I arrived. I got my towel and headed for the bathroom.
I walk to the kitchen after 30 minutes in my blue sweat shirt and yellow jogging pants with my hair still dripping wet and saw my mom in her pink apron cooking something for breakfast. I glance at the flour, eggs on the table.
"Morning mom." I say, kissing her cheek.
“Morning sweetie. How are you feeling now?” she asks looking at me with a worried frown.
I smile and hug her. "Yes mom." My oh-so-caring-mom. I'm an only child. Being overly cared for is something that I can't avoid being the only child of the family. She's always like this even on small matters.
"Need some help?" I ask, holding a bowl and whisk.
“Oh, right.” she cups my face in her hands.
"Mom!" I whine.
"Don't overdo yourself next time. Okay?"
“Yes mom." she hugs me.
"I love you dearest."
I pat her back. "I love you too mom." I smile. "I'm starving mom. Let's finish this."
Besides caring for people in the hospital, I also love to cook just like my mom. Ever since I was a child, I have loved to watch her baked cakes and cookies. I learned the basics of cooking from her when I was eight. When I reached high school, she taught me almost all of her recipes from pasta, soup and my favourite, moon cakes!
“What's the occasion mom? Is it your birthday?" I wonder.
"Oh, your college roommate called last night. She said she's coming over." she answers without glancing at me. My eyes widens with excitement. "What was her name again?"
"Claire." I utter. Wow, she's back. It’s been two years since we saw of each other after she and her family transferred to New York.
I remember hugging her tightly after my graduation ceremony when she went along with mom and dad. On that very day, she told me that she's leaving. Yes, right after my graduation. I actually promised myself not to cry on my graduation, but thanks to my silly roommate, I did. Even so, she did cry with me. We told our goodbyes a few hours before she left, but then, for all the talks, her naggings, our silly shopping and just those times that I can be myself with her, I'd lie if I say I don't or didn't miss her.
I nibble on my toast and eggs after mom baked the snow skin cake. It’s one of mom’s original recipes. It's a simple mousse cake actually, coated in white sweet cream topped with cheddar. A pretty weird combination you might say? Yes, but trust me, it's delicious.
I look up from my plate and towards the door. I smile. Claire.
I hurriedly open the door and see her standing in a black ruffled sleeveless top, white skinny jeans, brown leather ankle length boots with her dark brown hair tied in a high pony tail that is also perfectly curled.
"Hi." she utters, beaming at me with her hand waving at me like a 5 year old kid would do.
"Hey!"
She pulled me to her. “I missed you Cakes!"
"It's nice to see you too Muffs." I say, patting her back. It's supposed to be Muffins actually. But, she likes Muffs better. She likes muffins so much as I like moon cakes and so, we're Muffs and Cakes.
She lets go of me and inspects my body. It's just like her. "Have you been skipping your meals Cakes? My, you've gotten skinnier!" I gave her an What's-the-big-deal-look. She always gets annoyed by it.
"Don't give me that look young lady! I forbid you to look like that especially on my wedding." Did she just say 'my wedding'? "Hi Mrs. Roberts!" she calls out to mom, leaving me astounded by the door.
I turn towards them.
“Claire my dear, you've grown even prettier!” mom squeals.
“Thank you Mrs. Roberts. Mom wanted to come though, but she's pretty busy. Oh-" she unzips her leather sling bag. "She wanted me to give this to you Mrs. Roberts." she says, handing mom a green wrapped box.
“So nice of your mom. Thank you Claire." Mom glances my way. "Come on here sweetie, the cake's ready."
Claire looks at me and motions me to the kitchen behind mom.
I eyed at her suspiciously.
"Oh come on Cakes, don't give me that look!" she walks towards me and pulled me to the kitchen.
Mom had the cake set on the table. "Oh. I have to leave the two of you for a moment, I still have to call dad."
"I'll take good care of Claire mom." I say, setting out two mugs and saucers.
"Thanks sweetie, I'll be back." she says, glancing the two of us. She hang her apron on top of the counter and walked out to the living room.
"Would you like some coffee?" I ask. "Or some hot choco?"
"You know what I prefer Cakes." she says, not hiding the glee from her voice.
I hand her the mug with her favourite hot choco. She smiles. "Thanks." she's done slicing the cake for the both of us.
I sit. "Have I heard you right young lady?"
She looks my way as she scoops up a piece of the cake to her mouth. "Hhm, I missed this. Still yummy as ever."
"Don't evade the topic Claire." I say, eyeing her in a queer way.
She smiles. "Cut it Chloe. Okay, I'm sorry I haven't given you news of me." she holds my hand.
"I've been doing well the past two years, I'm currently working in a clothing line company and it's really good. I get to work with designers and help them in fashion events." she says, without a hint of indifference.
I smile. "That's great."
"Yup." she smiles. I lay my fork to the saucer and look at her.
"I know how much you love this whole fashion thingy Claire, I don't want you to be too hard on yourself." She had always been inclined with fashion. I actually wanted her to become a model, but she loves designing clothes. I can't blame her though; she's pretty good at it. I remember when we celebrated Christmas together, she gave a lavender dress that she personally designed and insisted me to wear it on our family dinner. I still have it with me right up till now.
She bows her head and raise her hand in surrender. "You got me Cakes."
I smirk. She chuckles.
"Anyway, I could always go to you if ever I'll get sick."
"Right, and receive a mouthful from me." I chuckle.
"You wouldn't!" she says, pointing her fork on me.
We laugh. I missed this.
"So, about your wedding?" I ask.
"Oh, right." she smiles, placing down her fork. This time, her smile's not the usual one that I get to see, but an unmistaking smile saying that she's deeply in love. "I want you to be one of my bride's maid."
